I tried to install iTunes6 for Mac's from your link to OldApps.com but when I get to the install button, it tells me there is nothing to install and the thing reads 0 bytes. ??? Did Apple manage to sabotage this too? Please advise. Thanks.

I burned them to a CD and when right clicking to convert it still brings up the same message that "protected files cannot be converted into other formats." I tried changing the burning format to MP3 and same message.

EDITOR'S NOTE: I assume that after burning to CD, you imported those songs into iTunes. If so, remember that you will then have TWO copies of each song, one protected, and one not.

Dear Mr. Rankin, thank you personally for your website and your willingness to give people advice on how to take purchased music from iTunes so I can play them on my MP3 player. Thank you again for making it possible for me to take the music that I paid for and transferred to my MP3 player that I use in my car. Yes, I am a Christian and I thought about what I was doing and I feel a sense of anger and frustration at iTunes for not allowing me to use the purchased music the way I see fit. I have thought about it and prayed about it and I have a clear conscience about transferring it to my MP3 player because the bottom line is this is that I only play one device at a time and not at the same time. And I don't give out my music to other people. I believe that is wrong and illegal. When people listen to my music in my car they want me to burn them on a CD and I tell them no, I will not do that because that is against my conscience and against the law. And I encourage them to go purchase it themselves.

Thanks again for your website and I hope that others will express their appreciation for your willingness to put out this information that I'm sure, ticks off Apple but frankly that's too bad. I don't believe they have any right to imprison my music and their format once I purchased it. I realize I signed an agreement and I'm breaking the agreement but once I've understood the agreement now, I would never have agreed to it in the first place and frankly I will never buy another album from iTunes store again. I will find some other way to convert my music into iTunes format and then play it that way so I can download it to my iPhone. I feel like a "sucker" for having purchased three albums from iTunes and only recently realizing that they were not allowing me to transfer them to my Sansa MP3 player. I bought the sansa because it was a lot cheaper than the iPod. And I also have an FM transmitter that I use in my car and it works perfectly and I don't have to have all these CDs lying around on my car. Thank you again for putting yourself out there and putting your information out there and I appreciate it immensely and it has worked very well for me.

My office has just restricted use of ITunes on our computers. I have ALL of my music in ITunes and do not have a home computer to transfer to... suggests? We have until 27June2008 to uninstall ITunes and I don't want to lose my music at work!! Thanks for any help you can give me!

EDITOR'S NOTE: You could convert all your music to MP3 (using the instructions in this article) and then start using a different music manager ( see http://askbobrankin.com/itunes_alternatives.html ) but I'm pretty sure your employer would view them in the same light as iTunes. Your best bet is to download all the MP3 files to an iPod or other portable music player, or burn them to a music CD.

Thanks so much for your iTunes converting article, it's really helpful. However, I followed your advise about burning them to a CD and then loading them back off the CD again, and I still get the same 'Protected file' message. I get the same message on both the CD version and the normal version, and it's driving me insane! Please can you help me out?

EDITOR'S NOTE: You must have burned a DATA CD. You need to burn an AUDIO CD. See the comment in the article about how to change the settings to avoid this problem. Here's how to check if burned an audio CD: Open the disk with Windows Explorer and see if the filename ends with .CDA -- if so you have an audio CD.

I think all of you are nuts... when you pay for a song you do NOT own that song. All you have paid for is the right to listen to it... you have rented it. When you go to a movie do you expect to be able to take it home with you?

EDITOR'S NOTE: Not such a good analogy. When you purchase a song on iTunes, there is no expectation that you can only listen to it once. Nor is there a disclaimer that you might not be able to listen on a non-Apple device.

I suggest to try converter TuneCab. It converts DRM-protected and unprotected music, films, video clips, audio books etc. Easy to use all universal software. http://www.tunecab.com

On changing your iTunes songs to mp3. I don't know if they have updated there program but I'm able to do so without burning the song to a cd. I did what you listed changing imports to mp3. Then all you need to do is right click the song then click convert to mp3 and bam. Your done. No hasle at all.

EDITOR'S NOTE: I'm guessing you downloaded your song(s) in the iTunes+ format, which does not have the same DRM restrictions.

I am using iTunes version 7. I am converting my songs to mp3 format right now and without having to burn to a CD first. I changed the default Import Using setting to MP3 Encoder. Then I right-clicked on a song and clicked the Convert Selection To MP3 and it did so without any error message. Apparently Apple is allowing this conversion now. (All this in the hopes that it will copy over to my MP3 player at the end of the process...)
