Just wanted to say thanks. Your instructions were perfect!

I followed your instructions: burned some iTunes file to a CD then imported the songs back into iTunes. I then used your directions to convert a song into an mp3--or at least that's what I thought. iTunes showed me that it was converting the song to an mp3 but there was no other copy of the song on iTunes, and when I try to upload the song to a ringtone maker site, it says that it isn't an mp3. So, two questions: 1) how can I tell whether a song is in mp3 format or not, and 2) why does it seem that the conversion is not happening when iTunes says it is?

EDITOR'S NOTE: Right-click a song, then select Get Info. This will tell you what type of file it is.

I followed all the above selections and still no love from iTunes. I still get the "...could not be converted because protected files cannot be converted to other formats.

Great success! I followed the directions from suggestion #1 (burn to cd, convert to mp3), using a previously protected file. It worked! I transferred it to my Sony music player. Thanks for the tip.

I used TunePat (http://www.tunepat.com) which uses the virtual CD burning method to convert my iTunes music to plain MP3. It is much more faster than the physical "burning-ripping" with a CD-R/RW.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Since your email address ends with "tunepat.com" your recommendation makes me a bit skeptical. How does it differ from NoteBurner?
