I had similar problem. My Computer would shut down at different times and go to the XP Blue Screen of death. I drove me nuts. I put more fans in in the case. It didn't solve it. I had a DVD Burner go out and put a new one in. The computer stayed on for 3 days, then it did it again. So I started looking at all of my drivers. I downloaded the latest Video Driver, the latest Motherboard Driver, etc... Microsoft's Drivers were 7/1/2001. By doing this it hasn't done this for 3 weeks now. I suspect it was either the Motherboard Driver or the Video. I'm happy now! |

Sometimes a failing power supply will cause this rebooting problum as well. |

Thanks for introducing SpeedFan, I've just dowloaded and try it. Great tool, everyone reading this should get one. At first I got a shock for my Temp3 temperature is 128. After reading the help file, it runs out the Temp3 is redundant. The best part is I am able to test my hard disk health using the S.M.A.R.T. tab. I got this resutl for my harddisk: Look like it's time to take precaution to avoid another disaster. Thanks again Bob for sharing this excellent tool! |

I had a mysterious random reboot issue when I bought my first brand new pc. Every 3-4 days it would reboot while I was using it. That was 12 years ago. When I bought another new pc, four years later, same house, it did the same thing. Turns out we have brown-outs and installing a battery backup solved the problem, besides also providing extra insulation from surges and storms. |

I had similar issues last year when my PC started rebooting over and over again. Very quickly, every time I turned on my PC. I found out that my CD drive had died. I took it out of the boot sequence and everything was fine. |

Another thing to look for are programs that automatically update themselves. My computer was refusing to shut down a few weeks ago...I checked the CPU temp (normal limits), I unchecked the Automatically Restart in the System failure section, nothing was working. I then turned off automatic updates from Quicktime and voila, no more problems. |

I am trying to diagnose a similar problem. When I entered the CMOS I noticed that in the PC HEALTH section I am getting a FAIL reading on the +3.3v power rail. Sometimes also the +12v rail. I have unplugged and replugged the power connector from the power supply to the main board and this has temporarily solved the problem twice. The last time, I increased the fan speed of the power supply (mine is adjustable but not all are) and have had no problems for about 5 days. I think my problem may be solved. |

Also you can use the event viewer in win xp to see what was the problem. |

Don't overlook the mother board I've seen a lot of failed motherboards with this problem it's not restricted to one manufacturer but restarts are the most common symtom, see here http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/pcperipherals/0,39051168,39287434,00.htm or google "bulging capacitors" for plenty of information. |
