I've followed this thread with great interest, but would like to know what it means "to backup your complete hard drive, one partition at a time" as per Bruce's post on March 30, 2006 01:35 PM. Wonderful site for all us newbies.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Louise, if you don't know what that means, chances are very good you only have one partition, and you don't have to worry about it. :-) A hard drive partition is a chunk of space (usually) set aside so you can run multiple operating systems.

I have just been reading the comments re System Restore and noticed that no reference has been made to the following

Go to Start > Control Panel > System and open the System restore Tab. If there is a check in the box to "turn off system restore", then your computer will NOT HAVE any restore points to restore to.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Yes, If you explicitly turn it OFF, then you'll have no restore points. But the default when Windows is installed is ON.

I've just recovered from a "Windows could not start... Windows\system32\Config\System missing or corrupt" error by using the registry backups that were in the system restore file. Now that I've checked, I'd like to delete some of the newer restore points that don't work, and save a couple older ones (I don't want to dedicate my entire HDD to this!). Can I delete individual entries in the System Volume Information\RP** folder? Thanks - great thread!

EDITOR'S NOTE: Maybe... but that sounds iffy to me. I believe you can delete restore points by rightclicking Properties on the C: drive, then click Disk Cleanup / More Options / System Restore / Cleanup.

I am trying to restore my computer to yesterday. There are no previous dates to pick on system restore, I can't even go back in months. I would be happy if I could return it to the last time it was turned on! Is there any hope to turn back time and restore my computer to yesterday? Thank you! Was so happy to see this thread!

EDITOR'S NOTE: Sounds like System Restore was turned off... did you check into that?

I installed a new wireless network card on my computer which seemed to conflict with everything within the PC. I thought it was the graphics card initially as the system startup wouldn't show up on the monitor so bought a new one (GeForce 6). After the problem was diagnosed I removed the wireless card and replaced it with the old network card but had to reauthenticate my copy of windows XP.

Now even with the new graphics card I can't watch video on my computer, it takes up 100% of the CPU (even though I have up to date drivers) and also when I try to access system restore it comes up with a totally white blank screen....in fact the program does not seem to respond at all (I have made sure the tick box is unchecked in the system restore bit in control panel). I am worried that if I move various parts of my computer around I'll have further conflict errors...any ideas what I can do?

EDITOR'S NOTE: You don't say what kind of computer (CPU) you have, or how much memory. That could make all the difference in video processing.

I restored my system to an earlier date. The files i had stored in the D drive which is not the drive where os is loaded. I lost a lot of data rom folders there. How do i get it back.

EDITOR'S NOTE: As mentioned in the article, System Restore won't remove or modify any personal data files such as word processor documents, spreadsheets, music & photos. So it's likely that something else was responsible for the missing files on your D: drive. What was deleted?

I am having problems with SR. I have read through this thread and other articles but non seem to help. I created a SRP on all my PCs (Running XP2) in June 2006. I have a policy of creating SRPs when ever I install hard/software on any machine. I recently checked the state of my SRPs and found that on three machines the SRP in June was not available. Any ideas. I also have a friend that has SRPs going back to 2005. I thought the default was 90 days. Can SR be configured in more detail than setting the diskspace it uses. Any help appreciated. Alan

EDITOR'S NOTE: I think it's possible for a restore point to be deleted by anti-virus or anti-spyware software, so that MIGHT account for missing restore points. As for the 90-day limit, that does appear to be true on my WinXP/SP2 system. Is your friend running an older version of Windows?

I have an emachine. I loaded a program, then decided to go to the oldest restore point to get rid of it. My system froze and I can't get into my hard drive now, even if I make it a slave or external drive. I think I may have to pay to get the it recovered. Any advise? :o(

EDITOR'S NOTE: Does the BIOS recognize the disk as present? Does Windows?

In my experience, System Restore is worse than useless, since an upgrade deletes restore points. Here's what I mean.

I just did a Windows upgrade, using IE (I don't like Windows doing things behind my back.) FIRST, I checked that System Restore was on and that there was a restore point, dated 23 July (Today is 24 July). I did the update, checked System Restore (which was still on) and there were NO more restore points. I've had this happen several times.

System Restore does not create any restore points. It is NOT disabled neither have I added any new programmes recently. The only "message" which I get on the calendar for each day is 'Software Distribution Service 2.0" which means absolutely nothing to me. I always was under the impression that "Restore Point" or similar MUST be shown. Can anyone out there please help this guy in Malta. You can contact me on jay@waldonet.net.mt.
