I also have problems using SR with ME. I think it worked several weeks ago. But had a few problems, which I seemed to get over, by running the ME Set-Up in Safe Mode. Everything works OK now, but there are no Restore Points to restore to. And I can't create one. I just get a message:- System Restore is not able to create a restore point. Please restart the computer and then run System Restore again. -- Do that, but still nothing. Just get the same message. Anything I can do?? Cheers.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Upgrade to XP -- seriously. Windows 98/ME is no longer supported by MS and you won't be able to get security patches for any new malware that may threaten your privacy and security.

Hey, I'm seeing alot of people hving a specific issue with System Restore, and I was wondering if you know any solutions.
This is a completely fresh install of XP SP2, with all of the updates, etc. and I wanted to create a restore point for it, but it told me, "System restore is not able to create a restore point" and to reboot. Well, I disabled S/R, rebooted and re-enabled it with no success. This is also probably the 12th website I've found doing research on this issue, (including MS-support) so I've tried everything previously mentioned everywhere else.
Help me Obi-wan, you're my only hope.

System restore never worked well on my old Windows ME PC; it has worked perfectly on my XP SP2 computer. It came in particularly handy after a power outage, where (even though I use a surge protector) the system kept hanging up after boot up, with the CPU cooling fan running in high-speed. Booted the computer in safe-mode (only way to get to System Restore), did my restore, things returned completely to normal.

I have windows XP. each time i try to restore my computer it says "your computer could not be restored" and that nothing was changed. No matter what restore point I choose it says the same thing. How can I restore my computer?

EDITOR'S NOTE: Most likely your restore points have been corrupted, by a virus or some system malfunction. There's not much you can do, except try to clean up the current mess with good anti-spyware and anti-virus programs.

I have found a superior and free alternative to MS' System Restore. It is ERUNT - The Emergency Recovery Utility NT. It will perform an daily automatic or manual backup the entire registry of any Windows since Win95. It will also quickly and easily restore to any backup.

I have found ERUNT to work every time, unlike the hit or miss System Restore. If you use ERUNT you can disable System Restore and salvage the disk space it had been using for its ineffective backups. ERUNT also comes with a registry compactor that I have used but cannot vouch for because I don't know how to evaluate it.

EDITOR'S NOTE:ERUNT looks like a good Registry backup tool, but System Restore (when it works) does much more, even rolling back software installs and other system changes.

hi, after restoring my computer, it re-started then came up with the safe mode option but it just keeps re-starting, can you help?

EDITOR'S NOTE: You may need to try the FIXMBR or FIXBOOT commands, as described here: http://www.askbobrankin.com/system_restore.html

OK Bob i have a windows xp running on my laptop,I downloaded internet explorer 7 on top of my IE 6 which automatically went away when 7 was downloaded,I can,t erase IE 7 now and even worse for some reason system restore now that IE 7 is downloaded won,t restore me to a earlier time,i,ve tried many times. Is my asus recovery disc my only option here.

EDITOR'S NOTE: You don't say if you have a problem with IE7... but the recovery disk will work, but you'll have some work ahead... re-applying SP2 and later fixes, as well as all any software installed since you bought the laptop. And you'll have to ensure you are not auto-updated to IE7 again.

Hi,
I have Windows XP, my computer started having rebooting problems. It only rebooted and got to the desktop with Safe mode. When I tried to reboot it normally, it stopped at the welcome screen and never got to deskstop. I pressed F8 for the windows advanced options and got that page but now when I turn the computer on, that page automatically comes on everytime. Should I just do system restore or is there any other solution. I have no way of accessing the system restore point. Though, I had saved my important documents just last week in an external usb drive. Thanks for your time.

EDITOR'S NOTE: You can do a system restore from Safe Mode. That's what I recommend.
