I'm running Windows98SE...I can't find a system restore in the system tools. I can't get the computer out of "Safe Mode". This is the second computer this has happened to in two weeks. I think it has something to do with an AVG antivirus download. I uninstalled the AVG, but still am in safe mode and can't get out of it. Help???

EDITOR'S NOTE: . Windows 98 has a similar (but less functional) tool called Registry Checker. Try the ScanReg command from the Start/Run prompt. I'd advise strongly to upgrade to XP, since W98 is no longer supported for security fixes.

I have XP SP2 fully patched and protected, plus a full set of system restore points. Suspecting a Registry problem tried them but none work.

Microsoft tech site suggests 'removable drive' may cause this because all points are 'linked'. I regularly use a USB hard drive to back up so will reconnect and try to restore, but this will compromise my archive - grrrrr, XP product is not described properly!

Well, my computer is in the dumps right now, and I wish to system restore, but it only goes to a certain date. So, in other words, is there a way to system restore all the way to the beginning?

EDITOR'S NOTE: You can only use System Restore with the available restore points. If you got a System RECOVERY disk with your computer, it will (in theory) restore it to "factory new" settings.

I used system restore to where it was first installed. Then I wasn't satisfied with the results and wanted at a later date so I did it again, and my computer never booted up again. Every time I do go up to boot it it keeps saying invalid partition table.

I'm using a T2984 Emachines PC with XP(SP2) and am having problems. With the 'Vundo' or 'Virtumonde' virus-popups, emails, slowness, "oddities"(restarts, blank screens, etc.). I cannot get our computer to read the original 'factory' Restore DVD, and the virus won't come off any other way. Is there any other way to completely reset our computer to its ORIGINAL condition?

EDITOR'S NOTE: What happens when you try the Restore disc?

When I use it, there is a sort-of grating sound. It will not open; must be corrupted. Is our only solution to buy a new one?

EDITOR'S NOTE: It could be the disc or the drive. I'd try the disc in another computer to see if it can be read.

Hi Bob,
My system restore does not restore. It runs, goes through all the points, re-boots, but the message I ALWAYS get is that the system could not restore. It shows checkpoints for each applicable day, and also lists what activities I may have done on that day, but will not restore to ANY previous point. I run both xp and xp pro. (this is happening on 2 of my DELL machines)

EDITOR'S NOTE: Sometimes anti-virus software will prevent System Restore from working. Try disabling it first. Also, users of Norton AntiVirus have had success after disabling the Auto Protect feature.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Tell me what you mean by "blank screen"... Is the ENTIRE screen totally black, or white? Or just one window on the screen?
