What if you deleted downloaded files, but have not uninstalled kazaa, would files still be able to be shared? EDITOR'S NOTE: Check your Kazaa settings to see which folder is supposed to be shared. If it's empty, there should be no problem, except wasted CPU and RAM resources. |

Is it possible to recover downloaded files/songs from your hardware even if kazaa was uninstalled? I deleted the program after it made my computer run slow, but there was a particular song that I can't find anywhere and don't remember the name to. EDITOR'S NOTE: Possibly... see http://www.askbobrankin.com/recover_deleted_files.html |

I downloaded "Restoration," but my file was completely empty and there was nothing to "restore by copying". I don't understand why it was empty. why can't these files be found? shouldn't downloaded files/songs be on your hard drive permanently? EDITOR'S NOTE: Sounds like you're referring to http://www.askbobrankin.com/recover_deleted_files.html -- The space occupied by deleted files may be overwritten, if you don't act fast. It's also possible that the program you download to recover a file will be stored in the same spot as your deleted file... |

so, pretty much there's no way for me to get that file back? EDITOR'S NOTE: Sounds like it got clobbered by other data. |

hi bob i have a problem. i have limewire but it crashed and i get a pop up screen on my computer that says one or more necessary files appear to be invalid this is generally caused by a corrupted installation please try to downlod it again and i tried but i deleted the files off of the start menu and when i tried to download it it wouldnt finish because it said that the old version was still runing and now i dont know wat to do. EDITOR'S NOTE: You'll need to kill off the old running version. If there is no icon on the taskbar, use Ctrl-Alt-Del to find the task and nuke it via Task Manager. |

Hello Bob, I noticed that some of my personal Word files have been uploaded on LimeWire. How did this happen? EDITOR'S NOTE: What makes you think so? Did you find them available for download from someone else? It's possible that you set your Limewire settings to allow this, but it's not the default. |

Hi Bob, I had a file sharing program about 2 years ago, but like many of the situations above, I had to uninstall it because it made my computer run extremely slow. However, after reading all of this copyright stuff, I became paranoid and was just wondering whether legal action could be taken in the future by companies toward anyone that has ever downloaded any songs, games, or movies in the past? EDITOR'S NOTE: Not likely, especially if you have deleted the offending content. |

Bob, I read an article today about college kids who were sued for piracy because they were downloading music. Why would they sue them if they were not selling them to anyone? Also, I read about a grandpa who was being sued over his grandson downloading four movies by using a file sharing program and deleted them immediately. Why would they sue him if there was only four and if he deleted them immediately? Could legal action be taken for people who have deleted the content of their downloads and if so, how long afterwards? For instance, could someone be sued for deleting music or movies and have to worry about being sued for downloading something 5 years from now? EDITOR'S NOTE: It's not always the SHARING of the content that's the issue. It's the STEALING of the content. If you download a movie or song that you would have had to buy, the creator is not getting paid for his or her work, right? As for how long after deleting can you be sued... it's anyone's guess. |

99cents for a file copy of a digital song is ridiculous. I understand the reasons why they charge what they charge... added up, 10-15 tracks essentially equals the cost of a CD off the shelf. As long as everyone pays for downloading every track, they wouldn't lose any $$. Sure now you can pick and choose what that "virtual" CD would include for the cost... but I still think the industry needs to change with the technology and make it more affordable. |

My Limewire no longer downloads videos, but it tackles audio just fine. Any suggestions? I uninstalled, downloaded the newest version, and I still have the same problem. It used to work just fine. EDITOR'S NOTE: What happens when you try to download a video? |
