Check out ekidnaworld.com. It is a uniquely safe, Australian themed virtual world for 8 -12 year old kids. It was created by a real mum!

great for kids 10+ I really enjoy playing it and I'm 20 years old. There's lots of games, in game contests, create a character male or female; adjust their height and weight, skin tone, hair color, eye color. Shop for clothes and furniture for your character, missions, challenges, lots to do, now they have a halloween theme that's going on, it's lots of fun.

www.moshimonsters.com is a great website for kids. It is very similar to Club Penguin but even better in my opinion. Instead of adopting a penguin, you get a choice of monsters. You can dress them up, feed them, earn rox (the moshi currency) and buy them items to decorate their own rooms. They can go into kid-friendly forums and chat with friends and other users. No extremely personal information is asked, so it is completely safe for a child to use as long as they have been taught the rules of cyber-saftey.
