Fair warning if you sign up for the "free trial period" with Ancestry. com you should know that they will request your credit card number for some vague reason. As soon as your "trial period is over your will find their charges on your card and JUST TRY TO GET THEM TO STOP!!!!!!

How about background checks on potential tenants? That was alluded to in the email newletter. I used to think I was a pretty good judge of character, but after a few horror stories have decided to get serious.

EDITOR'S NOTE: You can do that with a service like Intelius, I believe.

I use Veromi.com to find Korean War Vets for a reunion group--on most of them the age is listed. Then it's off to Zabasearch.com for the address. Be aware, however, that not all addresses on these sites are the actual homes of the persons listed. Often they are mortgage companies, banks, etc, where the name was recorded on the public documents these were taken from.

The Infospace link goes to
http://www.superpages.com/?SRC=insp

Which then shows a list of results but if you want more than the persons name you have to pay a fee... it doesn't really constitute a FREE people search at all!

EDITOR'S NOTE: Looks like InfoSpace was recently bought up by SuperPages. You can still do free a People Search there, just use the green box on the left. You'll get name, address, phone, map and driving directions for free. The "Public Records Search" will direct you into a paid search service. I've replaced that link with one to WhitePages, which is a little clearer on the free versus paid stuff.

I use LinkedIn (somewhat similar to Facebook), but for business professionals. Also use my state's Circuit Court pages to find recent addresses and for geneology purposes (ie finding out who the father might be on a child out of wedlock, etc).

Thanks Bob! Due to your links I was able to find someone online for free, otherwise would have cost $35
:-)

The free portion of Peoplefinders.com is useful for determining how common a name is. Most of the fee areas of these sites provide more limited and outdated data, for greater cost, than professional databases available to investigators, attorneys and information researchers.

I write and give presentations on the benefits and and alternatives to commercial people finder sites. Read more at http://pibuzz.com

EDITOR'S NOTE: You'd think these online commercial people finder sites such as Intelius would be using the same professional databases as investigators and information researchers, no? If not, why not?

Sometimes you search for a person and can't find him. Maybe that's because he is dead.

Some -- not all -- deceased US citizens are found in the Social Security Administration Death Index. Go here:
http://ssdi.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi

It's fast and it's free.

If you are a military brat or anybody else who attended American government-affiliated schools overseas (DoDDS, International, Missionary, etc.), you should go to the Guestbook on http://www.overseasbrats.com

The Guestbook is a searchable database. Search by a person's name, or the name of the school you or they attended. You might find a former friend or a link to the school's alumni association website.

It's all totally free, and no passwords to remember. Be sure to leave your own message so your friends can find you.
