I'm still happily living in the stone age with W98 SE, but get the same problem. Restarting the computer in Safe Mode does the trick for me. |

Press ctrl + alt and del and close all running programs and make sure that you put a tick in the box to repair auto and run on full scan... Remember to disable your antivirus too. |

You could also click on the Start button, and leave the mouse there. As long as the Start menu is on the screen, the screen saver won't start. It's a lot easier than trying to remember to re-enable your screen saver. |

I've read the easiest way to run scandisk and defrag is to do it in "Safe Mode". Just my 2 cents.... |

Simplest method to avoid the continued restart during scan disc & defrag is to run both in safe mode.. That should avoid anything writting to the hard drive and any other problems happening while doing this system maintainance.. |

This is from my former web sites tips and tricks section, in the near future I'll be starting a new site with all the info I've compiled. Problems running ScanDisk & Defrag in Windows Me If you're having problems with scandisk or defrag and it stalls at 10% or 30% along with a message that something is writing to the drive, to run it successfully: 1. Go to Start, Run and type msconfig, click open. 2. Click on the General tab, uncheck all items listed under Selective Startup (make sure that Selective Startup is selected). 3. Click apply then OK and restart Windows. 4. This will start Windows with only the basics running; insures that nothing will interfere with either scandisk or defrag. 5. Run either scandisk or defrag, when done, go into msconfig and select Normal Startup or the configuration your machine was running on previously and restart Windows. |

I found that there are othe SPYWARE programs that can stop your scan disk too. Cleaning those off may help. You could also try turning off all the stuff that starts up at start. At least long enough to scan then turn it back on. If in windows XP: Go to Start/Run, type msconfig, press enter, click tab where it says start up, click disable all. After reboot try your scan disk. Once done you can always go back to msconfig and re-enable your apps. |

My scandisk kept restarting until I started disconnecting my cable modem while I ran it. The odd thing is that it worked for a long time with it connected, then suddenly it... didn't. |

I'm still stuck with Win '98 also. Before I run Scandisk and/or Defrag I run EndItAll. The old version, 1.0.0.33, dated August 1, 1999. I leave it at the defaults, and it closes down just about everything not necessary to keep the computer running. I then run Scandisk and Defrag with no restarts. There is a later version of EndItAll, but it takes a bit more to figure out what to have it stop. All versions of EndItAll are no longer supported, but I use the early one anyway. When I've finished with the scan & defrag I reboot. |

On several machines at work, I've had to run scandisk from the autoexec.bat file (Win95). Add the line, "scandisk C: /f" to the autoexec.bat file. |

I have an older Compaq PC. Windows 98 old. I have replaced the M/B, power supply, CPU, RAM and hard drive but it still can't get past the COMPAQ splash screen during POST. It keeps rebooting...sometimes several times per minute. Can you steer me in the right direction please? EDITOR'S NOTE: It sounds like you replaced everything except the box it came in! Could it be your home electrical supply is not "clean"? |

I have an old computer with Windows 98. When I turned it on the other day it stated that I had not closed down the system correctly and was going to "safe mode" and then trying to run microsoft scan disc. It went to 20% and then stopped. After may reattempts, I decided to let it run and after about 8 hours it finished the scan disc only to clear out to another scan disc. I cannot get out of scan disc. EDITOR'S NOTE: When you reboot, doesn't ASK if you want to run Scandisk? If so, tell it to skip the scan and start normally. |

i have xp home and I need to run recovery console to fix my pc cause it won't boot I keep geting this blue screen that says "The Type of system is NFTS Cannot open volume for direct access. Windows has finished checking the disk" and it freezes right there so I was wondering if I cn run a xp pro recovey console to fix that problem and will anything get earased by doing so or make things worst and if so where could I get the right cd ???? EDITOR'S NOTE: Recovery Console won't delete or harm anything on your disk. When you get to the Recovery Console command prompt, do CHKNTFS /X C: to tell Windows NOT to check the disk at next startup. Reboot normally. If problems persist, run CHKDSK /X /R C: to fix any disk problems. |
