I get this error message when I try to add a printer to my notebook so that I can print wireless to my desktop's printer:

Windows cannot connect to the printer. The printer driver is not compatible with a policy enabled on your computer that blocks NT 4.0 drivers.

I think it is because I have XP Pro on my desktop and Vista Home Premium on my notebook. What do you think?

I have done everything you said to share my printer with my laptop which is connected wireless to internet from my cable modem on PC and it all goes okay with PC, but Notebook does not go like instructions. HELP.

EDITOR'S NOTE: First, you must help me help you. Is your laptop running XP? What happens when you try the instructions I gave?

These instructions are very helpful. I have one problem. I don't have access to the administrative user, and my mother doesn't remember the user or password. Is there a way to override this? I really, really need to use the printer for school. Also, is it possible for just the laptop itself to use the printer? Our desktop would not hook up to the printer and the computer (a windows ME) just stopped working. Thanks for your time.

EDITOR'S NOTE: This should help: http://askbobrankin.com/windows_password_reset.html -- Or you can just install the printer software directly on the laptop.

I have a canon mp600 printer connected to my desktop computer (XP) which is set up to share. I connected the printer cable to my new laptop (Windows 7) and installed the printer on the laptop. [The shared name is the same on the desktop and the laptop.]

I reconnected the printer to my desktop BUT now how do I print to my printer from my laptop? Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

EDITOR'S NOTE: It's not clear to me if you have a wireless network, or if you followed the instructions in my article. Can you clarify?

My issue is similar to what's been shared but i have no resolution with anything so far. I have a good network connection with a Vista desktop and laptop and can see all of the shared files, and can see the printers associtated with the desktop, but when i've added the printer through the "add printer" tab in the printers dialogue box, it goes through the motions, and shows something in the print que, but no joy on the printer. Printer sharing is turned on, and the printer will print fine if I do a hard USB connection, but not wirelessly. Any suggestions.

I get to the point of "add printer wizard" "browse for printer" "Shared printers:" "Microsoft Windows Network" but my printer never shows up in the dropdown box. Do you know why?

I have a pc laptop that I connected wirelessly to a printer, the printer is connected to a MAC desktop via USB. I did everything you suggested and it printed just fine, but...when the MAC goes into a sleep mode (still powered), my laptop doesnt see the printer. Is there a way to wake up the MAC, or work around the sleep mode? Thanks

EDITOR'S NOTE: I would look for "wake on LAN" settings on the Mac, or disable the sleep mode.

thanks for the how to share a printer on the wireless network.
My network: belkin 802.11g with one desktop Vista, one desktop XP, one laptop XP. The printer is HP7110 officejet all-in-one connected to the Vista machine. I think it has a limited driver due to the Vista OS but it prints fine.

I shared the printer but cannot see it from my XP machines. I can only see the Vista machine. So I key in the printer name when trying to add to the XP machines. Still doesn't receive the print jobs sent from the XP machines. what else can I try? tnanks much. //Bruce

I have a new HP laptop with Win 7. I am trying to connect wireless to a printer that is connected via USB to a MAC desk top on my network. The new HP doesnt seem to recognise the printer. My old HP laptop with XP recognised the printer. Is this a Win 7 problem? Thanks

Does it matter if the printer is not wireless???

EDITOR'S NOTE: No, but if not, the printer has to physically connected (wired) to either the router, or one of the computers on your network. See also http://askbobrankin.com/wireless_print_server.html

OK,I successfully connected my laptop to the printer wirelessly and did a test print; it worked fine, but when the main PC is turned off it won't let me print anymore. Is there a way around this?

EDITOR'S NOTE: If the printer is connected to another computer on your network, then that PC must be turned on. Altrnatives would be to connect the printer directly to the network router, either wirelessly or with a cable. See http://askbobrankin.com/wireless_print_server.html

To do all this you have to have a usb in your printer.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Do you mean a spare USB port on the printer to add a wireless adapter? If so, not at all. In the case where the laptop is wireless, you can send to a printer that is attached to another computer with a wire, or you can attach some printers directly to the router. Bob-

I was able to fix my wireless system (printer and laptop) thanks to you. Not being that computer savvy I found that your no nonsense and easy to follow directions did the trick! Thank you.
