There are two services that are not completely free but interesting all the same: |

The best outgoing FAX service is at http://www.box.net . Box.net is a free service for sharing files, but their best feature is the ability to send free unlimited FAXes to anywhere on Earth. You need to: To send a FAX, upload any pdf, doc, xls, tif, tiff, rtf, txt, or html file to Box.net. Then right click on the uploaded file and choose "Send with eFax". |

Your article is informative but omits mention of a very reliable company I've been with for several years, maxemail.com. They offer a 30 day free trial (back in the day, mine lasted much longer than 30 days)and several different plans; I am a "lite" user, pay a small annual fee and a nickel per page (the first 100 incoming pages are free). I send and receive via Email. Their service has been excellent and I highly recommend them. |

You neglect to mention that signed documents, sent via fax are valid legal documents for many types of transactions, both personal and business. You cannot use a computer or one of the services of the type you mention here to do this. To paraphrase Mark Twain, the death of the hard-core, physical fax machine have been greatly exaggerated. |

Its good to have post such as this so that we can have an overview on the difference between providers. I just visited ringcentral and UFAX faxing service and both were very interesting but I find the former cheap compared to the latter. |

I would like to switch from a 3-D fax machine to one of the internet fax services. However, I am nervous about security. If I fax a signed financial document through one of the internet fax services, is that any more or less secure than sending the fax on a paper/telephone fax machine? EDITOR'S NOTE: I'd say using an Internet fax service is more secure, since you have the option to use encryption. |

I use GotFreeFax.com to send faxes occassionally, and I am pleased with the service. Their website is http://www.gotfreefax.com. They have a free fax service and a premium pay-per-fax service. The free fax service, according to their website: 1. Is truly free. Thanks. |

There is a service for receiving faxes free, www.faxbetter.com. Customers are assigned a toll-free number (888 area code) and must receive at least one fax weekly in order to keep the number active. Faxes are delivered to an e-mail inbox in .pdf format. It works well, but one has to be sure to get a fax weekly. Since it is a toll-free number, it's easy to send a fax to oneself. |

What about the fax capability of Xp on the "printer" list? I don't send many faxes but when I do I use that. The only "hassle"(which is nothing) is I have to disconnect the router connection from the phone line & connect the onboard system to the line whenever I wish to send one! |
