I use it on various flavours form Windows. Works like a charm.
OTOH I've been using it to playback only, I should play (sorry...) with other features mentioned in the article,

I have used VLC for years in Microsoft OS.
I`ve yet to have it work in Linux.

I have used VLC media player for many years as it integrated with other programs to be able to preview them as they were downloaded. Now I use it as a stand alone due to its versatility.

I haven't yet found a file this WONDERFUL player can't play. I've been using torrent files for hard to find European TV shows and many of these files are in formats other players such as the installed Windows Media Player won't play. Someone clued me into this amazing little player years ago and I have been forever grateful to them and the VLC designers!

And it's FREE!

FYI, as of this morning (3/23/15), VLC Media Player is NOT in the Apple App Store. VLC for iOS, however, is in the iTunes Store.

I have been using VLD for years and can't recall when I first ran across them. I still have Windows Media Player on my computer but never, ever use it. VLC is my "go to" player. I love the fact that it is also free.

I have been using and recommending VLC for over ten years.
Friends who have expressed dismay over the antics of Windows Media Player or bemoaning the fact that they are confused by which codec to download, as well as the noobies to the digital world, have all recieved my same advice.
Download VLC and let it update whenever it tells you it is time.
And do not get VLC from anywhere but the official source - Videolan.org.

I have been using VLC for over a year and love it. Thanks for this article as I was not aware of the latest upgrade and will download it immediately as it adds some great features and will save me from having to use two programs

I've been using VLC for years and it's the only program that I need. If it can't play it, then no other program will do it. You will never regret using this program.

The VLC Player in the Apple Store for iOS is not free, a purchase item. Free for Windows. What gives??

For the past six weeks on Windows Media Player, I have been unable to play some DVDs made by downloading from a video camera. They play fine on the laptop where the original download was made. Windows Media Player just crashed. I downloaded Real Player which I had used several years back. Same result. Searched the web and found VLC Media Player about a week ago. Created a restore point and then downloaded it. Voila, it worked--problem solved. Now it is my fastball media player.

On Apple, VLC might solve the problem with obsolete Adobe plugins. Maybe no more "blocked plugin" messages.

VLC has an interesting history, started in France to allow students to play stored recorded lectures. It supports SAP which our encoders sent and also allows transcoding from one encoding method to another. We used it for monitoring video from border cameras.

You can't play a Netflix movie on a VLC player because the player does not support Silverlight.

Thanks Bob and Mr beans,
I have several DVD's from Europe which I have trouble playing. I discovered that a Karaoke player will play them, but so far any way that only works with the TV. I shall definitely try VLC.

I tried to upgrade my VLC v2.1.5 , but when I used the "check for upgrade" menu option it returned a message that I had the latest version ! ??
So I followed the link to the "latest version" that you provided & downloaded v 2.2.0 . It installed flawlessly in place of the previous version.
Although I have used VLC for years, I found your review very informative.

I've been using VLC player for more years than I can remember and dare say commenced using it when it first became available - an excellent program in my opinion and highly recommended.
