The AskBobRankin Geekly Update

To make your holiday purchases easier (and cheaper,) take advantage of free apps. Both RedLaser for iPhone and Google Shopper for Android reads bar codes and gives comparative pricing and detailed information.

The latest tablet to hit the market is the Android-based Archos 101. The 10" device has a capacitive touchscreen, WiFi, camera, SD slot and HDMI port. It's available for $299 for an 8GB model, $349 for 16GB.

A recent survey by ChangeWave Research says that of the 5 smartphones compared, iPhone 4 owners were the most satisfied by 77%. Motorola came in second with 71%, then HTC 63%, Samsung 45% and RIM 44%.

Cox Communications is the first US cable company to offer a wireless phone service. TV, broadband and wire-line are included and will initially be offered in Hampton Roads, VA, Omaha, NB and Orange County, CA.

Virgin America Airlines has introduced Elevate Points to its customers. They can earn 25 frequent flyer miles for checking in and more for using online services like as Facebook Places and Foursquare. Sign up with Topguest or download the app for iPhone or Android smartphone.

Netflix has confirmed a new streaming only plan for $7.99 a month on its blog. For those who have unlimited 1 and 2 DVD/streaming plans, subscriptions will go up one dollar per month.

Nielsen took a poll to see what devices kids aged 6-12 would like to purchase in the next 6 months and the iPad topped the list. Kids at 13+ wanted a computer and put the iPad in fourth place.

At a cost of over $2 million, but at a savings of half a million yearly in paper costs, the US District Court System has installed eJuror. Potential jurors can respond to a summons online, request an extension or get a deferral with no paperwork.

Giving a Kindle Book for the holidays is simple and quick. Amazon's Give as a Gift button lets you purchase one for anyone with an email address and can be read on multiple devices or via apps.

Dell has finally put up its Inspiron Duo for sale. The convertible netbook/tablet lets you switch from type to touch and carries a $549 MSRP.
