MS Fax doesn't work with XP SP2

Category: Windows

"I used the MS fax program in Windows XP for sending faxes on my telephone line. After installing SP2 updates, the program doesn't work. The fax console reports All fax printers are inaccessible and I also get a Microsoft Shared Fax Driver is not installed message."

For some people, there is an easy fix. Uninstall and then re-install the Fax Services component, and restart your computer.

If that doesn't solve the problem, you can try a registry hack. Save the seven lines shown below in a plain text file called faxfix.reg.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Rpc\ClientProtocols]
"ncacn_np"="rpcrt4.dll"
"ncacn_ip_tcp"="rpcrt4.dll"
"ncadg_ip_udp"="rpcrt4.dll"
"ncacn_http"="rpcrt4.dll"

Locate the file with Windows Explorer, right-click on it and then select 'Merge'. Restart your computer.

If neither of those do the trick, the only suggestion I can offer is to back off the SP2 mega-patch.
