Tourbus - The Final Bus Stop
In case you haven't heard, The Internet Tourbus is rolling up to its final stop. After 16 years of online publishing, Tourbus is one of the longest-running email newsletters. But two things have happened this year, prompting me to hit the brakes. Here's the full story...
Farewell, Internet Tourbus
It was the summer of 1995 when Tourbus started its journey through cyberspace, taking tens of thousands of people along for the ride. Tourbus riders visited cool sites, and also learned how to use search engines and other online reference tools. Recurring themes included how to handle spam, avoiding computer viruses and keeping those computers running smoothly.
If you've been a Tourbus subscriber since the beginning, you know all about the Squirrels and the Snickers. (If not, browse through the Tourbus Archives and the FAQ for some background.) Patrick Crispen, my original co-driver, hopped off the Bus in 2008 to focus on getting married and starting a career. Since then, I've kept things rolling.
But two recent events came together to convince me that it's time to bring the Tourbus to a stop. First, the Google Panda update hit me hard in April of this year. I make my living online, and 70% of my traffic and income disappeared overnight. So I've been scrambling to recover from that, and finding time for Tourbus has been challenging. Second, I was just informed that AOL is shutting down the LISTSERV which has powered the Tourbus newsletter since 1996.
Say what you will about AOL, but they provided this free service as part of their "Give Back To The Net" initiative for many years, and for that I owe them thanks. So with mixed emotions, I've made the decision to take the Internet Tourbus off the information superhighway. Perhaps I'll put it in "cloud storage," we'll see about that. :-)
The Good News
If you've been a Tourbus fan or subscriber, the good news is that this doesn't have to mean goodbye. The Tourbus website and archives will remain online for posterity. And for the past several years, I've been working hard here at AskBobRankin.com, which continues in the spirit of Tourbus, answering your questions about the Internet, computers, technology and gadgets.
If you miss Tourbus, I encourage you to subscribe to ASKBOB UPDATES, a free email newsletter that comes out most weekdays, with a short summary of each article that I publish. As in Tourbus, I focus on these areas:
