What is Google Pack?

Category: Software

Google Pack is a collection of useful software programs that have been gathered together by Google. It was originally designed to accompany new computer packages as a starter set of productivity, office and entertainment software, but anyone can download the free Google Pack software from the Google website.

What Do You Get With Google Pack

Google Pack offers a great selection of Google-brand and third party brand software programs that you can choose from. The Google-brand products that you can install from this software bundle include: Google Desktop, Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer, Google Photos Screensaver, Picasa, GoogleTalk, Google Earth, Google Updates and Google Video Player. The third party brand products that you can select from include: Mozilla Firefox, Skype, Norton Security Scan, Adobe Reader 8, Spyware Doctor Starter Edition, GalleryPlayer, RealPlayer and Star Office.

Google Pack offers a unique selection of computer programs. Some are designed for making internet surfing easier, while others offer you multimedia design capabilities. One of the software products that you will want to install when you use Google Pack, no matter what you are interested in, is the Google Updater. This program acts as an "Add and Remove Program" manager for your Google Pack products. It will help you to manage the Google Pack programs you decide to use, and it will provide you with a way to find and install updates for those programs.

Overview of Some of the Google Pack Products

Google Earth is a very cool mapping application that lets you take virtual tours around the world. Think of it as a combination atlas and flight simulator. One click and you can "fly" to your own neighborhood, or any place you want to explore. Thanks to high-resolution 3D satellite imagery, you can see mountains, rivers, cities, even down to the street level.
Mozilla Firefox is an internet browser that features tabbed browsing, enhanced privacy & security options, and offers a large number of add-ons that allow you to customize the look and add useful features. See Tricking Out Firefox for more ideas on how to customize your Firefox browser.
Star Office is a third party application that provides you with a suite of programs similar to those offered by Microsoft Office. It includes a word processor, a spreadsheet program and a presentation program. Because it's built on a Java base, it is capable of running on multiple operating system platforms. See Free Office Software for other alternatives to Microsoft Office.
Spyware Doctor is a popular anti-spyware program, and has been praised by many reviewers as the best anti-spyware protection. It detects, blocks, and removes all types of spyware and adware threats. See Should I Buy Anti-Spyware or Anti-Virus Software? for more help in dealing with viruses and malware.
Google Desktop lets you search your computer as easily as you search the web with Google. It's everything the Windows Search feature wants to be when it grows up. You can find files and programs easily, and it even searches inside ZIP files, word processor documents, PDFs and more. You can also add Google Gadgets to customize your desktop with news, weather and other fun stuff.
Picassa will help you find and organize all the pictures on your computer. It scans your hard drive to find ALL the images on your computer sorts them by date. You can move and rename pictures, or make your own albums. See Photo Editing Software for other alternatives.
Skype is another great program in Google Pack. It allows you to make voice and video calls via the Internet, for free. It also provides you with low rates for making voice calls to cell phones and landlines.
Google Talk is an instant messaging application that also allows you to make free voice calls. Integrates very nicely into Google's Gmail. Follow this link for more Popular Instant Messaging Services

One of the best things about Google Pack is that all of the programs offered in this software suite are free. You don't have to worry about nagware or spyware programs. You also get to select which programs you want to install and which ones you want to leave in the box. And Google Pack is available in several international versions including versions for the U.S., Australia, Canada, Germany, Peru, Italy, France, South Africa, the U.K. and many more.

I use the Photo Editing Software "Picassa" from Google. I have about 200 Family Photos stored there. I love it. very easy to use ..... I also noticed those very same pictures are stored in the "My Pictures" file in XP...... I assume "Picassa" scans my Hard Drive ....downloading all of my Pics. QUESTION Am I wasting space ? should I delete the pictures off of the hard drive ? or should I leave it alone ?

EDITOR'S NOTE: I wouldn't use the term "downloading" in reference to how Picassa scans your disk. Downloading means transferring a file from the Internet to your computer. I don't know if Picassa moves pics from one folder to another, or if it just keeps track of where they are. Try deleting ONE picture and see if Picassa can still "see" it.
