Using the TING calculator. 1 device, 1000 minutes TALK TIME, 500 messages and 2.5GB DATA..TING costs are 2X the rate of CRICKET or 1.75X the rate of Straight Talk (WALMART). TING is no deal except maybe the minimalist user

Is this like Republican Wireless? Where it works on available wi-fi and then switches automatically to cell (and then back), supposedly "seamlessly"? If so, which is better? Thank you for any info you can provide.--blm

I have been using Consumer Cellular for many years and they have the same kind of services you mention with Ting. I can pick and choose my services and if I am going over in my service use they send me an email to let me know I need to consider bumping up to the next level. Customer Service people all speak good English and you never have to wait long to get one on the phone. They are very courteous and always helpful. They use AT&T and I have never had a problem with coverage.

I have been saving with Ting since July 2012. With two smart phones (my main phone and a spare), my monthly bill is $39.21 including taxes and fees. It could be a little more than $6 lower if I canceled the spare, but I like the peace of mind knowing that if I forget to bring my phone with me, the spare is available.

I switched from one of the major carriers, where my monthly bill before taxes and fees was $102 for one smart phone and one flip phone. Ting is a great bargain that I promote to all my friends.

Seems to be the same model as Consumer Cellular which is basically a reseller of AT&T. I think CC rates may be slightly better than Ting. Ting is a Sprint reseller.

Sounds like a great idea, and I would probably go for it, but both T-Mobile and Sprint coverage in my area are quite horrible.

My question would be what kind of coverage does Ting offer. Obviously they don't own a lot of cell towers, and connectivity while I travel is important to me.

This Ting thing sounds like a great deal. To bad they don't have a similar plan for Tracfone prepaid people.

Thanks, Bob!
You got us going on Ting a while back. In fact, you are known as "The guy who told us about Ting."

I love this company! Their customer service is THE best! One time, the rep stayed after her shift because we were having such a good chat. Another amazing guy introduced me to a favorite song. Isle of Hope sung by Tommy Fleming.

Try that with Verizon.

And, for three phones, we pay about 30 a month total.

I couldn't tell if you had a link so you would get a discount.

Please use that if he did, guys. He more than deserves it!

Ting offers 25 dollars off if you are referred by a customer. You both get 25 off.

Hope that's okay. If not, hope you can just delete this part, Bob.

Thank you so much! We've saved a bundle!

Wow! I was all ready to check out Ting until I got to the part that it uses Sprint and t-Mobile networks. We travel in an RV quite a bit and we have found that both of these networks are extremely limited. If we get off the interstate or stay in a rural area (which happens all the time), we have been left with no coverage. I use Cricket--AT&T network and inexpensive, especiallty for one user.

Bob,
you apparently are not up to speed in the cell phone world. Good info on Ting but I can get unlimited talk and text and 2.5 GB at 4G and unlimited at 3G for $40 a month in Metro PCS including all taxes and service fees etc. This would cost a fortune with Ting. I guess Ting would be good for someone that just wants an emergency cell phone to have in the car in case of an accident or breakdown.

EDITOR'S NOTE: James, it all depends on your usage, your specific device, how many in your family, and your location. I've written extensively on mobile phone plans and related topics. See:

David,
The coverage is the same as what you would have with Sprint or T Mobile, depending on the type of phone you choose.

What we did was have 2 Sprints and one T Mobile in our family. There have been a few times, rare, where one didn't have coverage, but the other did.

We don't use our phones much, but coverage seems fine and we're in the boonies.

I agree with Burt who uses Consumer Cellular, we found our billing half of the previous big name's bills.
And to Linda, I'll add that Consumer Cellular uses AT&T's network.

I found Ting a couple of years ago and thought it would be great to ditch AT&T. Until I got my first bill for $175+ for data overage caused by some app on my wife's phone...

Signing up was effortless. Getting any meaningful support for various issues was a waste of hours on the phone. They're an offshore subsidiary of TuCows(yeah, those guys).

Switched to Verizon. At least I know exactly what to expect, and they can be held accountable. There are worst problems than not getting the absolute cheapest price for a service. Car mechanics come to mind...

If a person doesn't use their cell phones very often, like I do, try AT&T To Go Phone. It cost me $100. a year. If you reach $500., you don't have to pay at all for a year. You are unable to use to smart phone with this service. I've had it for 20 years.

Dear Bob, I am very upset that Microsoft is able to install nag windows 10 software on my computer without my permission. Are you aware of any lawyer with a class action lawsuit against Microsoft for this action? This is my computer and they don't have any right to install unwanted software on my computer. It's like someone coming onto my lawn and planting a sign saying I should get their product. It's called trespassing. Now they have a popup that says 110 million people have download windows 10. Maybe I should get a truck that says DON'T GET WINDOWS 10 and park it in their parking lot. I wish I were a lawyer.

An unhappy windows customer.

I liked the whole concept and personality of Ting and switched myself from AT&T as a test, hoping to move the rest of the family and save $$. Great for a few weeks. Then got myself a new MotoXv2 phone, and it took //weeks// to get Data working on the phone. All the reps I talked to were very kind, polite, good-humored etc - it was sort of fun, until it wasn't. Then I started noticing that in fact you do have to wait on hold when you call, often. And my teen-age daughter and I text a lot, so my Text was XL. Data L. The bill was L. I left, sadly.

Bob,
I'm sure you are very knowledgeable on the topic of cell phones and providers. But I seem to be missing a point. The phone I use is an LG MS395 smartphone and just for an individual plan @ $40 a month in the state of Florida. I use it extensively in talk and text as well as in the internet since its unlimited. Why would I even consider Ting? I'm I missing something here? As I said before this is great info for the occasional emergency only user. As a matter of fact I have already sent your article to a Friend who is exactly looking for this type of application and no one else offers it. Thanks for your help and continue the good work.
