I've never used anything but HP cartridges in my HP printers, and Epson cartridges in my wife's Epson printer. Never had a problem.

Of course, I never used anything but IBM-brand 5-inch floppy disks in my IBM-brand computer, either.

What the heck do you do with your cartridges Bob ? You have problems with your shirts - and one of your readers has problems with his trousers ? I used no-name replacements for years, with no problems, but then changed to re-filling my own. I use medical type latex gloves, plus medical grade syringes - one for each colour, and I keep a roll of kitchen paper handy. I've just fitted a new continuous ink flow system to my latest Epson printer - it came from China and all the individual cartridges, plus the tubing, and the bulk ink holding tanks (plastic bottles) were already filled. I removed the 'existing' cartridges, and then installed the continuous system and completed the whole job without even using the paper towels !! I'm guessing that you and your reader also leave oil and filter changes on your cars to the local garage because you get oil on your shirts or trousers - and we all know
the outrageous prices you pay at your local garage. Come on, Bob, by mentioning shirts (and trousers) in your article, you're just as guilty of using 'scare' tactics as the printer companies.
Read the instructions - carefully - and you'll get a very good idea if it's a job you could tackle, and then give it a go.

I don't know if I want you to be successful in this one, Bob. If everyone starts buying the cheap ink cartridges, I can see the entry level prints going up in price to at least $399.00. I'd like to just break even.

Hi Bob
Been using Go-Inks products in the UK for my 2 Epson printers for some years with no complaints whatever: good colours, no fade, very competitive prices. Have tried a couple of other remanufactured brands which were not as good or as reliable, so hastily returned to my first love!

Reassuring article. Thanks. I've been using after-market Global Sophia cartridges in my Canon MX850 for several years with no problems and at a substantial savings.

I've worked in the imaging field for many decades and specialized in image permanence. I've given talks, written papers, and taught classes. With that as background, here is my take on aftermarket ink cartridges.

If you are printing everyday stuff that you know is not something that you will keep long term, aftermarket cartridges will probably do the job--and you will save money. Ink producers and their refillers have grown more technically adept at producing a decent product.

But if you are printing photographs or documents that you want to save long term for your family or friends, I'd pay for the original manufacturer's products. Numerous tests by people like me and independent or academic labs have shown that most aftermarket inks have mediocre or poor stability--to light, heat, and/or ozone (a pollutant). They will fade more quickly, sometimes within years.

As an aside, as Bob notes many SOHO inkjets are sold below cost with the intent of making the profit on the high mark-up ink. I liked the model used by Kodak some years back where they sold the printers at a profitable price, but then priced the ink at a decent cost. As they said, you buy the printer once but the ink many times. Alas, that model failed in the marketplace.

Here in Canada I have used InkProCanada for many years for my old Canon MP520 (Cartridges are made by G&G). There have never been any problems and they ship free in Ontario and Quebec.

Hi Bob. I have used a continuous ink supply system for several years now and never had a problem. The quality is as good as the original catridge ink but the price per catridge works out at about 1/20 of the originals.

Thanks for your work, always interesting

I've used reman. injet cartridges with no problems. If you have a Fry's Electronics near you, they refill cartridges from the big manufacturers, while you wait/shop. Very reasonable for my Epson 78's which are becoming harder and harder to find.

I have been purchasing and using ink cartridges on eBay from various sellers for years with no problems.I did have a problem with one printer but it might have been the age of the printer. Sometimes eBay would notify me of a problem with certain cartridges purchased but I had no problem.

I have used Sophia Global cartridges for all my Canon printers. They are well made(as good as or even (?)better than OEM), work flawlessly and provide excellent imaging. Price is great. Good warranty. I buy them from Amazon. I highly recommend them.

I have been using Cartridge World (https://www.cartridgeworld.com/) toner and ink cartridges in HP and Cannon printers for years and been very happy.
It appears that EPSON decided to use an ink in their 98 & 99 series cartridges that doesn't mix well with replacement cartridges and the ink beads up making for some very ugly photos. CW refunded the money and my wife (this is her printer) does not want to experiment more by replacing all the cartridges at one time.

Hi Bob, great article. I was using the HP multi-function printers for years in my home office; I'm in the safety training and consulting business. I have to print student books and handouts for the various classes that I do. I use an online company that sells compatible ink and toner cartridges for the 4 printers that I use, It is TonerRefillKits.com. Great people to deal with; good prices, good products and outstanding customer service. You can also buy toner from them to refill your toner cartridges if you wish. Refilling the toner cartridges is a snap and relatively mess free. I have used this company for probably 15 years to keep my printers up and running.
Thanks Bob for all your efforts and info.

I use LD on you recommendation and have little to no problems. A couple of times they ran low on ink faster than normal.

I have been using after market cartridges a long time. On printers whose cartridges includes the print head about half of refilled cartridges have a problem of some kind. On Printers that the cartridge does not include the print head I have never had a problem of any kind, all my printers are ink jet.

Hey Bob,
A timely update on the subject. I tried LD per your suggestion some months ago: completely satisfied and I am about to place another order for my HP Inkjet. Delivery was quick (since I live nearby); cost of replacement fits my budget to a "T." Thanks. Keep up the good work.
P.S. Getting ready to forward this Newsletter to my family. Hopefully, they will subscribe, and also save some money on ink.

I buy ink cartridges from PrintPal and 101inks. Sometimes I get cartridges that leak and get a replacement. The electronic strip on the color cartridges is sometimes a problem on the discounted/refilled cartridges. Otherwise discounted ink saves a lot of money especially since the cartridges empty quickly.

I use Costco refilled cartridges in my HP All-in-one. The red print head failed and HP told me I'm out of luck. Go buy a new printer. Refilled cartridge caused the print head to fail according to them.
