I use Tello: 100 minutes for calls, 1Gb data and unlimited texts for $7 per month.
Minutes and data do not roll over. Don't use the other features you mention.

I have been a Ting customer for about a year now. I was with Verizon and my bill now is half of what it was with Verizon. They are very helpful when you call them, and when you do call, a person answers the phone, there is no press "1" for this, press "2" for that.

They are very reasonable and I am glad I switched.

Some time ago I read your article on republic Wireless....I immediately switched from T mobile... which was costing me 100 per month for unlimited talk and text for 2 phones... to Republic Wireless which cost me 10 per month for phone #1 unlimited talk and Text and I got data via wifi only and 20 dollars for phone #2 talk text and data. Very Happy. I get no bill per se but do receive an email saying my CC is being charged. Only down side...not really...is no live person you can talk to. However, any issues I have had were solved almost immediately via there web site help section were people are standing by to respond to your questions. NICE!

I'm a big Tello fan as well. I'm on their "pay as you go" plan, with zero monthly fee, 3 cents/min for phone, 1 cent per text, 2 cents per MB for data. I can make the data charge even less by using wifi in places where it's available. Since I don't use my cell phone that much, I've been averaging only a buck or two per month. Customer service has been great on the rare occasions when I've had a question for them. I couldn't be happier with them.

I wonder why they chose that name. Ting is also an antifungal product for athlete's foot and jock itch.

A few years ago you mentioned Ting as one alternative to high priced service. I've been with them ever since and with three lines my monthly charge is about $30.00. Needless to say I am quite happy.

I am a happy Republic Wireless fan. My monthly bill for unlimited talk and text plus 5 gb data and fees is $23. You do not accrue data usage when near your own WIFI system, which for me is almost always.

Some of the things that you've mentioned as amazing and innovative by Ting are the expected default status quo for all the mobile carriers in my part of the world.

No contracts, no early termination fees, almost no start-up fees, when using pre-paid plans, no monthly recurrent costs, only those of actual services used.

I'm currently an AT&T customer, with 2 phones using an avg. of 2000 talk minutes, 2500 texts, and 5-6 GB data total for both. I ran the numbers using Ting's calculator, and came up with the same monthly price I'm paying AT&T now, but with AT&T that includes $18 of phone insurance and $3 tech support charges. So, Ting is more expensive for us than AT&T.

Our Sprint family plan only costs about $45 per month for each of our five lines. For that we get totally unlimited text and data (including premium data add-ins) and roaming and (domestic) long distance and cell-to-cell calls and night-time and weekend calls. The plan theoretically provides 1,500 anytime minutes (7am to 7pm on weekdays) combined for the five lines. That 1,500 limit was rarely a problem, but just recently Sprint quietly eliminated that limit (without advertising the fact).

I'm not a person who likes to carefully track our phone usage, so I much prefer the "unlimited" approach over Ting's scheme where fees vary with usage.

The caveat is that we have had this family plan for the past 15 years, and we're grandfathered into it. So it may not be available to other people.

Nowhere do you tell me what carrier they use. I do not always use my phone from a major metropolitan area and so far Verizon has had the best coverage by far. How can I find out about coverage???

"Only" a $6 per month line fee? With tello I only pay for what I use. That means with our limited usage, our tello service for BOTH our phones has run just over $6 per month for over two years now. Unless you're on the phone a lot, and/or too lazy to use wifi for data, any unlimited plan is wasting money big time.

Okay, now I feel like an idiot for my earlier post bragging about the Sprint family plan I've had for 15 years. I got to wondering if it really was better than the current Sprint plans. So I went to their on-line chat where I communicated with an extremely helpful and knowledgeable representative, and learned that I could actually get a superior plan which will end up saving our family about $75/month ($15 per phone).

So thank you, thank you, thank you, Bob, for posting this article and consequently goosing me out of my slothful inertia.

Does this Ting works in Canada too?

I had Ting for many years. It was nice to save typically over $25/mo. vs. my previous Verizon service, and Ting's customer service was great. I reluctantly switched back to Verizon because I now sometimes need to use my cell phone, and Ting doesn't have coverage in the two places in two states where I need it. I was paying for Ting, but had to borrow my friend's phone when I needed to do anything at all with it. I had spent over a half hour trying to get a text message to send via Ting. No more.

I have been using Consumer Cellular for a couple of years now. For two lines and the amount we use it is $40 per month.

I've been using Ting for about 2 years now. They have great customer service and they have saved us about $130 per month on our phone bill. We use the internet minimally on our phones and we were tired of paying for service we weren't using. I highly recommend them!

I have family members that are now using Twigby. we have 3 lines which have there own settings and its less than $50 a month, combined. You can set for data and how much, or no data and wifi only. Also can set amount for text and voice. Very easy and flexible and you can make adjustments up or down during your monthly cycle,; and NO contracts!
I am currently using straight talk service; its $35 + tax... Does not seem like such a good deal after finding Twigby. They use the Sprint network and have Verizon for backup. My service uses Verizon and where we live I am NOT impressed with the service. Sprint coverage for our area is so much better. At some point, I plan on switching my phone and service to Twigby also... BTW, I have a sister who has used consumer cellular for years and loves the service and the savings. Just my two cents for saving suggestions. Thanks Bob for the heads up. (Its why we ended up looking around for alternative service options and discovered Twigby.)

Kind of funny. I was out by the road yesterday and some people stopped by me and said they were lost. They showed me the cell phone and said that they have no service here at all. So after directing them to their destination they said they used Timg. I said I am sorry, and they agreed as they sped away. Saving money for no service in different areas sometimes just is not a good idea. We are heavy Spint, Verizon, ATT and US Cellular in this area. To each his own.
