Here's to the desktop. I notice you didn't mention "laptops." I have had 2 over the years, very seldom do I use them other than to take with when I go away to enable completion of ongoing, or to do urgent work that can't be delayed until I return to the home office. I usually keep the laptop in the bag, getting it out only to ensure all updates are installed before taking with. I despise the touchpad (the laptops don't have touch screen and I really am not a fan of that anyway). So I take along my wireless thumb roller-ball mouse. I haul out the laptop to work with if I need to do more than a quick answer on email on the smartphone. But still, all in all, I prefer using the desktop over the laptop, and definitely over my smartphone (I've never seen the need for a tablet although they're good for using on stage for notes/presentations and for a display of lead sheets for instrumentalists and vocalists). Bob, you're right about the desktop not dying, for all the reasons you stated - but I do think many of the issues about repair of smartphones and tablets also apply to laptop computers. |

I agree, I own 4 laptops of which 1 is a Win 3.1 used still for ham radio, 2. a win 7 which I probably could eliminate but there is some programs I still like, 3. A old win 7 that is dual boot, 4 My win 10 that I use while traveling. My desktop is all I use at home for the above reasons and I do have an IPad 12" that I use when speaking. I also carry a Samsung 10S+ for my mobile phone and really hate trying to type on it as I have big fingers. |

Agreed with PCs never going away. In our household of 3 we have 8 tablets, 7 smartphones, 6 laptops and 7 PCs. Yes, not all get used at any given time and I will admit to being a tech junky and hoarder, but I'll never give up having at least one decent PC per person. |

Great article. Thanx. I may forward it on to my big mailing list I manage from my good old Dell Computer that still uses good old XP. Love it. I don't understand people who like to type with their thumb on teeny little phones that radiate their sex organs and their brains! Oh well. Glad to hear from a sensible person out there. Keep up the good work. |

when I worked for the County, they took away my desktop computer, giving me a laptop in a docking station with external monitor, keyboard, and mouse. I love "one size fits all" situations. I never had the laptop out of the dock! retired, I am contemplating travel, and might, just might get a laptop, however, I hear of internet cafes and wonder if I could just visit there and have one less item to lug around ☺ |

I utilize all of the above, but always seem to gravitate to my old, longtime friend, the laptop even as I make this comment. |

My last statement should read, "...the PC even as I make this comment." |

Everything said about desktop computers in today's column is true.Mobile devices can be seen as VW Bugs where the cars can be nice, but can be underpowered. The storage capacity of desktops and laptops are perfect for most work. There is cloud storage, but you have to have a reliable internet connection for that. |

I believe one reason for weak desktop PCs sales may be that more and more people no longer buy a new PC, but when needed upgrade the memory, the processor or even the motherboard, also adding more or bigger hard disks when they feel the need. |

I've never been a fan of laptops. The desktop will always reign supreme with me. As a heavy user of one, why would I want to watch something on a small screen (phones are even worse)? |

Another reason desk tops and laptops are still popular is the screens are BIGGER. |

Try running (and carrying) 2 x 24inch screens on anything other than a proper PC. For me, it is the same as a long distance trip, sure you can do it in a sub-compact but the comfort of doing it in a vehicle designed for long distances is the only sensible way to go. also fascinating to me is that folk are happy to do all sorts of things on a tiny screen but insist on buying a 65inch or larger TV. |

I'm typing this on my desktop with its 24" screen, I'll be packing my laptop with its 17" screen tonight for a 10 day trip, and of course my Moto Z smartphone will go along on the trip for its communication strengths. Each has its strengths that I use in retirement. May the New Year bring you health and wealth. |

Let me add another concurrence to your article today. You are absolutely on the mark! For me I’m using a desk-top that I built up fully 12 years ago. Sure, I have replaced the Mother, added Ram, tweaked the USB’s and swapped out hard drives. But the basic box is still the same. Heck, I just added another monitor to expand my work flow…..try doing that with a mobile device! |

As a gamer, I love my desktops. My next purchase will be another desktop, probably as an HTPC. Not being personally mobile, phones & tablets offer little appeal. A laptop is as mobile as I will likely ever go. |

At work a major manufacturer, we are moving from Xeon desktops for most of engineering work to laptops. They can run Creo Parametric well and they can go to meetings. |

I forgot to say that the laptops get docked to a real keyboard, cad mouse, and dual monitors. Some people like it as a third monitor for email and stuff. |

Don't forget "Network". Mobile/Tablet devices pretty much require network connections to do much of anything at all. Although networks are getting faster and more reliable, they are still a significant weak point. |

I'm all for desktops. I though laptops where a joke and have been waiting for the manufacturers to jump out and say April Fools Day. And now tablets... |
