(Get-WmiObject -query 'select * from SoftwareLicensingService').OA3xOriginalProductKey

in the PoweShell doesn't yield anything.

Agree with Sam. The command results in nothing.

Running as admin doesn't help.

I get the same result as Sam. Just gives me the same prompt.

Recovery drive has the downside that apps are not recovered. A backup program like Aomei Backupper does that, but the recovery drive will be way too bit to fit on USB stick. Using a removable hard drive is the better choice, IMO, to save the recovery file or a clone of the C: drive. In fact, in spite of what MS thinks, you are far better off to put your data on a separate partition or drive. Makes restoring Windows a lot less problematic.

The command you provided - (Get-WmiObject -query 'select * from SoftwareLicensingService').OA3xOriginalProductKey - does not produce any response in Powershell.

I think this is a good precaution to take in case Microsoft support or the immediate internet shuts down for any reason. You want a local backup such as a USB stick or DVD to restore your machine. You might want to find a spare machine with Windows and practice this procedure.

Hi,

Running Powershell and entering the command as described in the article works for me.

Thanks Bob for the article.

didn't work for me either. I also tried Power Shell as administrator - no luck with that. What next?

For those who got no result - try typing 'powershell' (no quotes) first, then the string in the article.

The key retrieval procedure worked perfectly for me. (Lenovo desktop PC)

I am confused, Bob. I believe that I heard that a product key was no longer required for Win 10; that Microsoft would automatically recognize your computer specs and validate through that means. Is this incorrect? I prefer to run a clone of my hard drive every 60-90 days (and I rotate between 2 backups) to replace my OS and documents if needed. With the WIN 7 clone, you could not view individual files on the cloned drive. Using Aomei or Easus, you can view/ replace individual files.

Microsoft says the command no longer works. You can install ShowKeyPlus from the Microsoft store to show the key.

Bob,
How about a link to download a fresh copy of W10 to a thumb drive and how to make an ISO if needed.
Thanks for all the help these past years.

Pasting your string in powershell did not result in displaying the key. It just gave me another powershell command line. Please post a fix for this error. I am running Windows 10 on an Asus PC. All legit and updated.

Worked perfectly for me following the instructions. As we all know that does not always happen with computer related stuff. I'll settle for my good luck this time.
