Will Ting Mobile Reduce Your Mobile Phone Bill?

Category: Mobile , Telephony

Mobile phone service plans can be confusing. You pay a certain amount for an allotment of minutes, text messages, and mobile data. But at the end of each month, you may see that you didn't use all you paid for. Or worse, you have to pay EXTRA for going over your allotment of minutes or data. And then there are the hidden fees, and inscrutable contract stipulations. Ting Mobile feels your pain, and promises not to rely on confusion to turn a profit. Read on to check out some of the Ting plans that can save you money on your mobile phone bill...

What is Ting Mobile?

Ting Mobile is on a mission to make your mobile phone plan make sense. You may have noticed that Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile constantly roll out new service plans, each one more confusing than the last. But Ting is all about clarity, transparency and flexibility. You can roll your own contract-free service plan, choosing different amounts of mobile data. (All Ting plans offer unlimited talk and texting.)

With the cheapest Flex Plan, each line added to your account costs $10/month, plus $5 per gigabyte of LTE/5G data. A single line with 2 GB of data would be just $20 a month. Data is shared across lines, so a family of four could pay $60 and share a 4 GB data pool. Or pay $80 and share 8GB of data.

The Set 5 Plan offers 5 GB of data for $25/month per line. Your example family of four would pay $100 and share 20GB of data. The Set 12 Plan offers 12 GB of data for $35/month per line. Your example family of four would pay $140 and share 48GB of data. There’s also an Unlimited Plan (22GB of data for $45/month/line) and the Ollo Unlimited Pro Plan (35GB of data for $55/month/line). You can add as many lines as you want under an account but all lines must be active on the same plan at this time.

Ting Mobile Calling

All Ting plans provide unlimited talk and text, nationwide 4G/LTE coverage and 5G in some areas. You can use your high-speed mobile data as a hotspot. Any unused data carries over to the next month. Ting's rate chart shows all the service plan options and details.

No Math, No Contract.

Just in case you're wondering, Ting Mobile started life as ting.com. That URL now point to Ting's "light-speed" fiber internet offering, which is an Internet Service Provider for certain cities in California, Colorado, Idaho, North Carolina, Maryland, Virginia, Arizona, and Tennessee. Ting Mobile, the focus of this article, is now at TingMobile.com

You can estimate your monthly needs for each family member and see which plan works best. Or skip the math and just sign up yourself and any family members for the lowest-priced Flex Plan and pay just $5 for each extra gigabyte of data if needed. (AT&T charges $10 for extra gigs if you go over your data allotment. Verizon charges $15 per extra gigabyte.) Keep in mind data is shared between family members, and you can switch between plans at any time.

Ting requires no contract, and you can cancel service at any time. That's a breath of fresh air for anyone who's ever been in the vice-like grip of those multi-year cellular contracts that come with hefty early termination fees. Also, there are no start-up fees with Ting. They don't charge extra to activate or transfer your number over from another provider.

And how about some free stuff? Every Ting customer gets Voicemail, Call Forwarding, Caller ID, Three-way Calling, and Picture & Video Messaging. Not impressed? How about free number porting, tethering, and mobile hotspot capability? I know for sure that Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T don't offer all those things for free.

I also like Ting's approach to customer service. Ting says they hire people ("geeks", actually) who are already accustomed to solving problems for their friends and families. These reps are trained and empowered to solve problems without reading from a script. As a test, I called Ting Mobile; my rep answered quickly, spoke perfect English, and was able to answer my questions.

You can purchase a Ting-compatible handset, such as the $99 Moto E smartphone, $299 for a Samsung Galaxy A23 5G, or $429 for an Apple iPhone SE. (Monthly payment plans are available) Or, you can bring your own device, if it's compatible with Ting's mobile carriers. Ting's phone campatibility page will help you determine if your existing phone will work with Ting.

You can also check Ting's network coverage in your area. Ting is a MVNO (mobile virtual network operator), which means they are a reseller of services from "three of the four national networks, including the nation’s largest." By contract, they're not allowed to name those "four national networks" but I can tell you that they are Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint. Ting provides service on all but the AT&T network. They'll automatically assign you to the network that provides you with the best coverage in your area.

Are There Any Incentives to Join Ting?

If you're already a Ting customer, you can give a friend a $25 credit to try Ting, get a $50 credit when they activate.

I can't guarantee that Ting would save everyone money in the long run. My gut reaction is that most people (or families) would benefit. For a small business, it seems like a slam dunk win. I have no business relationship with Ting, and I don't get anything if you sign up. Check the rates page mentioned earlier here, and see if your personal, family or small business mobile phone bill looks better with Ting. At the very least, it's a unique step towards more transparent pricing of cellular services. Perhaps it will spur further movement in that direction.

I switched to Comcast from T-Mobile, single, don't need multiple lines. Was paying $50 for one line at T-Mobile, 17.02 for the same thing at Comcast. Which is also my ISP, and the quality is better. If you don't mind no customer service, which I don't need, it's a bargain.

I am so tired of mobile data as it does not help me.I prefer a service that provides me with straight voice service.I use the Jiggerbug service, now known as Lively.

I have a nice flip phone that is easy to use.I have the option of adding text messaging if I need it at a future time.

The larger telephone companies are known for pushing all kinds of services on their customers. With Lively,I just get what I need and nothing else. Good luck with using Ting if they fit your needs.

Have you looked at TELLO?

I've had Ting the past three years or so, and don't see anything better for my limited mobile phone use. I also like their monthly bills, which are easy to read and understand. A final plus is Ting's customer service, which seems to be based in America. Can't understand why it's not more popular.

Another company to look at is MobileX. Several different "plans" available. You can go with their app's suggestion based on your use, select from set rates, or two "unlimited plans" (based on date usage).

I use a t-Mobil plan that costs only $15 a month with unlimited text & Talk and 2.5 GB data and that increases until it gets to 5GB. I prefer not being with a reseller an it eliminates any possible problems. Great service and support.

I use Tello - free, unlimited talk and text. 2 GB of data per month - $10.00 plus tax. Works just fine.

Sorry Bob, I did try to comment and wrote several lines. But I forgot to supply my name and email, which I would have happy to fill in, after I was notified that I was negligent. However, everything I had typed was gone, so I gave up. My comment included my frustration to find if I had coverage, where I too got a blank page and after 15 minutes gave up on their chat.

Count me as another very satisfied Tello customer. I don't use my cellphone all that much, mostly relying on my land line. So I can get by on Tello's minimum plan for $6. Includes 100 mins of talk, unlimited texts, and 1 GB of data. Works great for me!

I forgot to mention that if you go over your allotted minutes or data, Tello doesn't charge you for the excess at exorbitant rates like some carriers do. They just throttle down your speed, and you have the option to unthrottle it at any time by paying your usual monthly rate early. Also, you are not locked into your plan but can change it to something you find more suitable for your needs at any time.

I have Tello and don't use my cell phone much, if at all, but sometimes I like to look things up, so I have 2 GB of data...
100 minutes of voice
Unlimited texts
All for $7.63 a month.

I'm in my second year with Mint Mobile. $15/month for unlimited talk and text + 4 GB data. It's been the most low maintenance of any phone plan I've ever had. Getting a deal on a Samsung phone with my first year sealed the deal.

Just my wife and I, Verizon was charging me $120/month and wanted to increase it. I had Ting internet, they had a high rating from CR, and I switched. Now pay $50/month and have never looked back. If you don't have 4 people in the family, no question about it.

What about comparing to TracFone? I've had TracFone for years and only have trouble if signal is low as it doesn't roam as well after Verizon bought it ( I think)

Long time TracFone user here. Taxes are a problem where I live. They add around $5/mo. Total bill is around $24 for unlimited calls, texts and 2GB. I switched my landline several years ago to MagicJack. Even with the annual tax for 911 service, it's still only around $8/mo.

I've been with Ting for several years now with no problems. They also offer Youmail which blocks all numbers not in my contact list. This has cut my unwanted calls down to zero. So sorry telemarketers, you lose.

Blank pages when you follow the links in your story. Please correct. Would like to see Ting's coverage area and compatibility. Thanks

How about calls overseas?
I use Google FI and can many many countries for pennies a minute and my phone works as a local phone when I travel.
