I found a good application. Not sure if it would be classed as internet radio but basically you type in the name of a band/artist, the name of a song or the name of an album to hear the sounds you enjoy. Favourites can be saved as such and can be played from a playlist. The free version includes some audio ads, but they are few and not intrusive. You don’t get bugged to upgrade. I have been using it for a few months and nothing nasty has happened, no adware, trojans etc that I am aware of. (And I am pretty security conscious and aware.)

If you can’t find a track by name, try searching the artist. The track you want to hear will often turn up in the artist list. I think there were only two or three tracks I couldn’t get. One of those I have been trying to find for years and nobody has heard of it either on the internet or in specialist stores. And I do like some rare old stuff!

I have tried several of these applications and this one hits the spot for me.

the one i like is nexus radio. it is very hard to beat

The problem is that most radio stations are they Rock & Roll or talk. I have found "The Radio.com" you have a choose the kind of music.

Why listen to someone else's radio station when you can create your own for free?

I have my 350 CD's I ripped to mp3 and have stored on my computer.

You just need winamp, icecast server and oddcast encoder.

Also requires setting up your router to pass the stream on the port you specify.

Takes a little work to get it all up and running, but you can create multiple play lists based on taste/mood.

Since I'm outside the US many services are unavailable to me. For radio, not listening recommendations, I use Streema.

May I suggest a free Internet radio program that rocks. It's better than the paid applications. You can even record the Internet Streams to mp3. No ads, no spyware. The application is called Nexus Radio. Can be downloaded at http://www.nexusradio.com/

Since I am a DJ on DDCT radio, I think that DDCT radio is the BEST station on the net ! NO commercials, just good music 24/7 !

Radio doesn`t have to be just about music. Try bbc radio7, its "listen live" (stream) but if you goto the schedule you can select from up to 7 days previous. Classic & new comedy, plays, & readings

I recently discovered and enjoy Pandora, but my intro to internet radio came through Radio Margaritaville, and I still love it. I also enjoy kink.fm's streaming audio, when I'm in the mood for adult alternative but don't feel like monitoring my Pandora station.

Since I am outside the United States, many of these websites do not work for me. One that does is www.theradio.com which at the moment is doing well by me, though it's got commercials.

Love Live 365! I purchased the VIP membership. No commercials and access to a gazillion different genres. I love blues, jazz, and Old Time Radio, and you just can't find any of that up and down the dial.

Nice article but for the rest of the world you ought to mention that these stations are US only.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Another commenter mentioned that you can use www.theradio.com outside the USA. But I can't imagine that the hundreds of US-based radio stations that stream content online would care about (or even bother to check) your IP address. Did you try any of those linked via Live365?

I like Westside Will radio available at westsidewill.com in that this is a showcase for unsigned artists. There is always new music played every week. The new weekly one hour show is on every Friday at 8PM central time. This is a good place to get exposed to some music that you would never hear if the station was not promoting the yet to be discovered bands that play in all parts of the country and the world.

I'm a huge Last.fm fan. I have Pandora and Slacker on my Blackberry Storm, but neither has the features and artists that last.fm does. Give it a try -- it takes a couple of minutes to choose your favorite artists -- but then it gets fun to listen to new artists who are suggested based on your listening preferences.

I use my PC for listening to radio stations, but a more convenient alternative is switching off the PC and listening with a dedicated internet radio receiver.
