Hi Bob,many thanks for this information. I once downloaded a software which enabled me to convert some songs but after a month trial it went junk. I'll try what you have suggested. Hope it will work. Thank you once again.

I have been recording songs with Wavepad Sound Editor from "listen only" sites and saving them to MP3. Basically the same as converting from vinyl or cassette tapes.
I know it is not as convenient as burning direct but the music is digitized inside my computer and not travelling thru speakers, microphones and other analog eqipment.

Again, thanks Bob! About 2 months ago, I bought about $25 worth of music from iTunes. Got me some oldies, that I have been wanting for some time now.

I wanted to have all of these songs on my Playlist for Windows Media Player, since, that is my default player. I am really use to working with Windows Media Player, after all these years. }:O)

So, I tried recording all of my songs onto 2 CDs, in the MP3 format to see if, I could 'Rip' them to my WMP. I was really surprised, when I could do, just that. I didn't think that iTunes would let me. However, none of these songs were in the DRM category.

Now, to the present. I recently, got an ATT&T HTC Inspire 4G Android phone. I wanted to put all of my WMP Library onto my phone. Downloaded HTC Sync, so that I could update/upgrade my phone, when necessary. Found that I could, with HTC Sync, download all of my Music Library files to my phone. (Must mention, I have an 8GB Micro Memory Disc added, to the phone.) Wow, was I surprised!!! Now, I can play any of my favorite music anytime. I can hear them when I am on the go, either with Stereo ear plugs or through my car radio.

Now, I know that I used the CD method of doing all of this and I only had about 25 songs to transfer. However, I was thinking if, you had a very large iTunes Library, maybe you could use CD-RWs, to do the transfering? Just a thought.

Thanks for this, Bob. I have the opposite issue -- I want to convert MP3 to iTunes format. How about a how-to article on that?

Thanks Bob. I still won't be using the technique however. I won't deal with the massive I-tunes program download. It makes my computer freak out and i don't want Apple's stuff on my computer. I don't like how they operate as you have mentioned.

Hi Bob,
There is a quick and easy way to convert .m4p to mp3 with this free program :

http://download.cnet.com/Switch-Sound-File-Converter/3000-2140_4-11095883.html

There is a newer version which I personally cannot vouch for but v 2.03 in the link above works well.

Great article, Bob! Thanks for breaking it down step by step and speaking English so that us non-techies can understand!

HOWEVER, you kind of left off in the middle. I've now successfully converted all these files to mp3... how do I get them from iTunes onto another media player, such as Windows?

Thank you so much! This could not have been any easier to understand and follow. It takes a stroke of genius to make something complicated so simple.

Bob, When you say you will end up with two tracks, yes that's true. But when you say you can go into 'info' and "tell them apart". How? I have done that and the two tracks appear to be identical. However, having done that, getting them onto the Desktop seems a problem so that I can put them into my phone (MP3 player.)

EDITOR'S NOTE: You should be looking at the "Kind" column, not the "Info" column. One will say AAC and the other MP3. As for getting the MP3 on the Desktop, that's not necessary. Just navigate to your iTunes folder and you'll find the tracks there.

Thanks, Bob but where do I find "Kind" column. I have searched high and low.

EDITOR'S NOTE: As mentioned in the article: "Right-click in the column header area, and you can turn columns on and off."

Now you can import iTunes music to a windows phone through Zune. Without converting them.
