Spyware Tools Conflicting?

Category: Quickies

I've heeded your advice on keeping up to date with security patches, update my antivirus, run Spybot S&D, and Ad-Aware every week. I just added the Micorsoft Spyware Beta program, and now Spybot reports two "security risks". Two registry settings (AntivirusDisableNotify and AntivirusOverride) had been changed in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center.
Do you think this is truly a problem or just a "disagreement" between the two products?

A:

You can relax, those registry settings only affect how Microsoft's new Security Center alerts you to potential problems with your anti-virus software. Apparently a new version of Spybot S&D is now checking these registry entries and is giving you a poorly worded warning.

If your anti-virus software already alerts you when your subscription or software needs to be updated, then you can tell Spybot S&D to leave them as is. If you want Security Center to alert you (even though you might get two alerts) then roll back the changes, or go into Security Center and click on Change the way Security Center alerts me and check all the boxes.

I run SpyBot, AdAware SE, and the Microsoft Spyware Beta, also. I kept having this particular problem with Firefox - a page kept popping up uninvited - very aggravating. I got on the Internet and found others were having the same problem with the same page. It was suggested downloading CounterSPY, and I did. Checked my machine, and it had lots of spyware the others hadn't caught. I got rid of those, and the page has yet to pop up again!
