Excellent article and posts, Bob ! I was just wondering if we could entirely get rid of the cables, by connecting the video-out from the PC directly into the coaxial cable socket. In that way, the signal will be distributed to all TV's in the house. Any possibilities? EDITOR'S NOTE: You could try, but I don't know if you can "push" a video signal backwards along a coax cable. What would happen when it encountered the splitter? |

I have a 2003 Model Samsung TV and want to use it as my monitor. I bought what looks like a VGA to RCA cable, but when I hook it up from my Monitor port on my PC to my RCA ports on my TV I don't see anything. Is my computer not able to transfer VGA to RCA or did I buy the wrong cable? The cable's packaging says Connection Cable YUV 3 RCA Plugs to 15 pin HDD Plug, Transfers YUV signals. Thanks for any advice in advance. EDITOR'S NOTE: It could be the wrong cable, but I've never tried exactly what you're wanting to do. I'd visit the local Radio Shack and ask them which cable will work. |

I want to know if using my DLP projection screen as a primary monitor for my computer is a good idea or not. I understand that some technologies (of T.V.s) do better or worse with a concept termed as "burn-in" by some people. I guess what I'm saying is, I'm concerned about seeing a permanent Task bar at the bottom of this DLP projection screen while viewing any of my other inputs such as cable television, DVD player, etc. If this is not a good idea, is there a HDTV that you would suggest for a multipurpose monitor like what I'm looking for...? To fill my recessed wall I was able to fit a 46". I would like to keep roughly that same size. (did not know if the size would affect your suggestion) EDITOR'S NOTE: Unless you plan to leave the screen on all the time, then you should not be concerned about burn-in. Even so, you could you use a screen saver or auto-shutoff feature on the PC end to minimize these concerns and save energy, |

Hi, Bob. I have a Hp Pavilion DV6000 Laptop and we also have a RCA HDTV Model # D52W23 big screen projection TV. Is it possible with these devices to make our TV into a Computer monitor? EDITOR'S NOTE: It should be possible. See what kind of video outputs you have on the laptop (VGA, DVI, S-Video, etc.) and then try to match it up to the inputs on your TV. You may need some sort of adapter cable. See pix of the various connectors here: http://askbobrankin.com/buying_an_hd_tv.html |

I Have a 36 inch rca proscan tv.I would like to know what cables i would need to turn my tv to a moniter.on the back of the tv it fits rca and s video wires.if its possible can i hook up the tv and the computer moniter to my computer. EDITOR'S NOTE: It all depends on your computer's video out options. If it has S-Video OUT, you can use a simple S-Video cable. Otherwise, you'll need an adapter from whatever you have to S-Video. |

Hi, I have a new 32" dynex LCD TV and it has a ton of input/outputs and I know it could be a monitor, but my computer doesn't seem to have any of the necessary outputs. It has no S-video or composite or VGA. It only has the thing that connects the monitor to the computer (it is like http://www.mrsalty.net/arcade/monitor/pins.jpg) and nothing in the back of my monitor can come out. So is there a cable I can use or do I need a new video card?? EDITOR'S NOTE: The picture shows a VGA port. If your TV has a VGA, then it's a direct connect. Otherwise, you should be able to get a VGA-to-whatever adapter cable to go from the PC to the TV. |

Bob when I put my laptop on 1280x800 my television only shows a portion of the screen. How do I make it show the whole thing? EDITOR'S NOTE: You don't say what kind of TV you have. A 720p set will support up to 1280x720. |

Does the svideo make my tv a primary monitor or do i still have to use my computer monitor? EDITOR'S NOTE: You CAN use your TV as a primary monitor, without a regular PC monitor. But it's really best for movies, games and such. |

Do i have to change a setting on my computer? (I have a dell inspiron 6000, and windows xp) EDITOR'S NOTE: When you go to Control Panel / Display /Settings, do you see two monitors listed? ie: Do you see a 1 and a 2 inside boxes? Is there a cable that converts the 15 pin output on my lap top to three (video and 2 audio?) cables to my phillips tv? EDITOR'S NOTE: I can't tell if your TV has RCA audio+video (red/white/yellow) or composite ports. But either way, you should be able to find a cable or adapter to make it work. Search for VGA to RCA or VGA to Composite. |
