I have a cannon Pixma 3610 with tanks instead of cartridges. This is the way to go, 4 Tanks cost NZ105 and a set of cartridges would cost $140 yet the tanks print 3000 colour pages, 10x better than cartridges.

Aloha all y'all...
Bob!... you are such a rascal... how does your most-recent article this month collect comments from (b)2016...??? I've always considered you a guru of all things Internet, but it now appears you're becoming a bit mystical as well... (cue the eerie organ music... LOL)
* * *
I have an Epson R280 color printer that I've had for ten years or longer...because it prints directly on printable-DVDs.I don't think the model is available any longer, but Epson still sells the DVD trays - I just bought one a month ago.
* * *
I also own an Epson all-in-one scanner for its 35 mm slide and film capabilities.
* * *
I also own an Epson Artisan 800 color printer for its quality and resolution for printing photos and other color projects.
* * *
In the Army, I grew up skeptical of companies who want to put 6 capabilities/functions in one radio, so when the battery dies/or a bad power module dies... (b)you've lost 6 ways to communicate with anyone...(/b)
* * *
I look for the best/lowest price item that will perform what I need at the quality/quantity that I desire.
* * *
Although... I do have a large format photo printer somewhere around here...(grin) I wanted photos 11X24 or so... I bought a desktop printer that would print from a roll of paper... I could print 13 (???) by 42 (???) inches long...
So, the problem with specific items for specific tasks... when you no longer have a task to accomplish, the tool quickly becomes under- or unused for any other tasks as well... (wink)
I also have a medium-sized plastic bin filled with screwdrivers of varying brands, sizes, and tips... anyone want to send me a bid...? LOL
* * *
Finally, didn't Epson lose a court battle over someone complaining about the (b)tiny volume of ink(/b) in their new printers just to get people to buy more cartridges sooner? And perhaps that's why they were so nice a few years back...(wink)
* * *
I have no reason to doubt what Guru Bob concludes... he is the smartest internet guide I've ever had... and he is now bordering on being raised to the (b)mystic level over the earlier replies(/b)...LOL

Until that time. . .

Aloha all y'all...
How in the world did I forget how to use HTML codes from my first sentence to the end of that very same sentence...??? (sigh)
I guess my poor memory doesn't kick in until ... well, you know .. right at first...! LOL
* * *
I apologize to creating such a cryptic message over a mystic in our midst... but I can't edit a post after it's sent... (wink, wink)
* * *
Apologies all y'all...
* * *

Until that time...

My eyes are going batty from all those asterisks!
I have always been hooked on laser-printers. Lately, the networked versions.

"Some (laser) printers only need you to replace the toner cartridge, and others require that you regularly replace both the toner cartridge and the drum unit."

The black and white printing on acid-free paper, which is what I buy for printing and is pretty standard, is ideal for making copies of anything you want to last. I have letters written by my grandfather in 1887-1897, and I will be scanning and making copies of his originals using black toner on acid-free white paper as one example. The originals of those letters are now spread flat and kept in acid-free, top loading sheet protectors (what an awkward name, eh?).

I printed copies of past US Census pages showing where my ancestors lived, and who lived together.

Color printing with those liquids is not something that will last, I believe.

Bob, thanks for your advise as usual very much appreciated.
I am living without a printer for many years. At first it has been travel related and I got accustomed to store everything digital.
A portable scanner is sufficient.
Doing this on a regular base shows that there are very few occasions where a paper copy is required.
Beside that as stated a printer hardly used runs into higher maintenance cost especially when you are living in a tropical climate which is my case.
The rare occasions where I really need a paper copy I go to copy shop.
