I had the exact same problem with AVAST as you had with AVG. I hopefully cancelled it out. Time will tell. Mine wasn't freeware. I paid for a 3 year subscription. While loading/downloading/installing AVAST I never knew exactly where I was in the whole procedure. Very Un-impressed with AVAST. Steve P

Hi, Bob..........I read your essay with a smile on my face, because I just did the reverse! After years with Avast, I switched back to free AVG! Why? Avast kept disabling my photo program, MGI Photosuite; they kept declaring a .dll file to be a trojan virus, which it was not. After THREE efforts to "restore" the file, that was it; I uninstalled Avast. I hope you have better luck!

I have not used (free) Avast for several years. The only reason I stopped using it was because of their horrible nag page, asking me to upgrade to the paid version. Have they eliminated the nag page? If so, I may go back to Avast as I found it good in every other way.

We've been using Avast! for several years, after a Trojan Horse virus disabled one of our computers. Our computer tech recommended it, especially for hard to find bugs. We do use the paid version, but it covers all of our devices. Glad to see we're on the right track!

I began using Avast! after I read the scathing reviews of Microsoft Security Essentials here and elsewhere. I have been very pleased with Avast!

My only frustrations are (1) that it appears that to do a boot-time scan, you have to schedule that BEFORE you shut down your computer, and must then reschedule it for the next time you shut down your computer. (In other words, the "Do a boot-time scan" option is a one-at-a-time option.)

(2) I don't see a way to schedule a daily full system scan.

But it's fast, friendly, runs in the background, and by all accounts, Avast! is good.

Thanks for recommending it both in this blog post, and previously.

I am running AVG Free and have had no problems. I first installed Avast Free, but my Windows 8.1 said it was not compatible with my version of windows. Does yours say that? My computer is 64-bit, and I think the Avast was 32-bit.

I do appreciate your emails as they are very informative, although I've been dealing with computers since '81.

I purchased Kaspersky because of its high ratings. At renewal it refused to install because an antivirus program was already installed. Yes, the old Kadpersky. Next year I'm kicking it to the curb and trying something else.

I received notifications just prior to my AVG expiring this past summer, so I decided to give the company a call. I told them that it should expire in November, not August. They asked me if I bought the software in a store or online. I told them in a store. They asked me if I registered the software when I loaded it on my computer & I said no. They gave me a free year of their software and sent me an email explaining to me how to obtain it. I have had very little problems with it. I run it on XP, Vista & Windows 7.

I also switched from AVG to Avast about a year ago after having problems updating AVG.

I too recently installed Avast. I like it except for 1 small problem.
I have Connectify installed on my laptop. Avast will not allow anything to connect to the hotspot created by Connectify. It is a known problem from Connectify. I have yet to find a work around.

I have tried both AVG and Avast before, but neither of them worked for me. Actually AVG sort of worked but it was by no means the solution I was looking for. I am a screen reader user, and I had issues concerning accessibility with both of these. I'll start with Avast, since that is what I ran most recently. Avast came highly recommended to me by a sighted tutor who works with me. Keep in mind here that I'm in no way faulting this tutor. He's a good guy and has been doing his job very well. He said Avast was what he was running and he really liked it. But aside from the audio alerts letting users know that the database has been successfully updated, I did not find that the program was at all accessible. What's more, my tutor and I eventually discovered that my demo had expired and had to be registered in order to continue protecting my PC. So we got rid of Avast. Having heard great things about Microsoft Security Essentials, I installed that. Not only did I hear great things about the price or lack thereof and the level of protection, but I also heard that MSE was very accessible with screen readers. Both AVG and Avast don't seem to be too good on accessibility, but Microsoft Security Essentials is. I'm in no way trying to knock these or other potentially inaccessible anti-virus/anti-malware programs, I'm merely stating my findings as a user of assistive technology. I've also heard great things regarding Vipre's accessibility, and I might consider switching to that if I can find a payment plan that is conducive to my financial situation.

Was using Avast until I read your article praising AVG some time ago.

Used AVG for several months until I got tired of the pop-ups in the lower right-hand corner of my screen trying to get me to buy paid versions of what seemed to be everything they have.

So went back to Avast about three months ago and have been very satisfied with it.

I have to say that my situation mimics Omer's for both my and my wife's computers. I am also using 7/64P Pro and my wife uses Home Premium. I thought that it might be interesting to try Avast especially because it has had better ratings at times than AVG but just didn't choose to follow through.

I'll continue to keep tabs on how this works out for you Bob. Who knows. I might decide to give it a try sometime in the future.

After reading your previous article I dropped MS Internet Security Essentials on both my desktop and my laptop. Loaded up Avast free. Welcome to slower PC. I switched back to MSISE (Windows Defender in Win 8)and immediately got a warning that my desktop had been invaded. Turned out to be something called TrojanDropper and when I ran a FULL scan I discovered it residing in multiple places. Defender cleaned it out. I ran Malwarebytes just to be thorough and if found something else (I don't remember the name). In several years of running the MS security program I've never noticed any problems and never suffered slow-downs. Think I'll stick with it.

AVG does not play nice with MBAM!!! The Free AVAST! 2014 has a better interface than the 2013 version. Once you establish all the settings, the program runs without any trouble. For a Free program, you cannot beat it!!!

I'm glad you wrote this article because I had used AVG a number of years and when it acted up last year I purchased it. Every I turned my computer on it reminded me to renew my AVG. So this year I got fed up and said go take a flying leap and bought Norton. I will be giving Avast a whirl.

Thank you

Apparently AVG on my Win7 PC was updated with no problems automatically. I am concerned that there are 5 AVG processes running taking up 47.668MB of memory.

How many processes and how much memory does Avast use? Can someone please comment. Thanks

OK, I give up, what's wrong with MICROSOFT FOREFRONT ENDPOINT PROTECTION? So far, so good for me. It did let in a mistaken installation of some malware with an intentional download, but MALWARE BYTES took care of it. Other than that it's been completely trouble free and dependable.

Avast's Webshield appears to conflict with Online Armor's firewall. I stayed with Avast because Bitfender (free version) requires a complete reboot with every update, which is a real pain. I have limited Avast's Webshield because it seriously slows down my satellite connection.
