Bob,

I'm sorry to learn that you're having to deal with vision issues. I hope your recovery from the surgery goes very well and that your recovery is ultimately complete. Like a few other readers (above), I required cataract surgery on both eyes a few years ago, and after the operations, my eye sight was 20/20 in my left eye, and 20/30 in my right (I no longer need glasses). I'm in my mid seventies and much of my contact with the outside world is accomplished with my computers, so being able to see the screen is very important to me too. I say all this because I want you to know that you are not alone. Even though I cannot speak for your other readers I want you to know I have your back. If there's anything you need, please let us know. We'll do whatever we can to help.

I was one of the unfortunate ones who had to remain face-down in a contraption for a week. It was torture but like you my vision improved once the bubble was gone. So glad you caught it early.

Bob:
Glad the surgery was successful .

Thanks for reminding everyone about the need for regular eye exams . As a retired radiologist and now an enthusiastic birder, I know that good vision is important. I have worn glasses since I was 6 years old ! At age 74, I have early cataracts and there is a family history of macular degeneration so I visit my ophthalmologist yearly

Looking forward to many more years of your informative columns .

Bib, you remind me of the time leading up to the dual cataract operations I had back in late Sept early Oct year 2020. Yes, I did say dual operations 4 days apart. The results were fantastic, the day after the surgery I was reading the 20/15 line without any optical help from first the left eye and then 4 days later using the right eye with the same 20/15 result.
Now, that I have been tested for 3 years in a row and read the same line using one eye and then the other both reading the 20/15 line without a hitch. The doctor gave me a certificate that ends up going to the FL DMV and the "glasses" will be removed from my driver's license.
You just might get surprised when you go to read that eye chart after the surgery had taken place.

When I asked my ophthalmologist "What is the main cause of dry eyes?", he said "Birthdays."

I had a stressed retina that would have torn or detached. The symptom was tiny dots in my vision that I thought were bugs. In bed that night I noticed lights. I saw a retina specialist the next day and he tacked down the retina so it would not detach. It took 119 zaps with the lazar. Then he used a freeze technique to somplete the task. He used a flexible strip 1/4 " wide, slid behind the eye, painless and not at all scary. 30 years later things are still good, but there have been too many birthdays !! Keep your surgeons phone number in you wallet at all times.

Hi Bob, I alaso have developed eye problems. I have AMD Macular Degeneration. My wife has it as well but she is now legally blind. In order to read the computer (Windows) I have to change screens to night mode. I do that bt pressing shift, alt,& print screen, at the same time. To go back to a white screen I do the same. It is very helpful. I do the same thing on my cell Phone and I Pad. The ipad I go to setting and go to night mode. Not as easy as Windows. I hope that this helps.
I am also getting the new shot in the eye that stops further progress of Dry Macular.

I had cataract surgery on both eyes some years ago at age 74. Surgery was successful, I just need reading glasses and a separate scrip for computer. I'm glad that your surgery was successful and that you continue to recover. There have been so many technical advantages in eye (and other) surgeries that nobody should delay dealing with eyesight symptoms.

Hi Bob,

I hope you have a speedy recovery. I am having cataract surgery on my second eye Wednesday. I agree with you that it is wise to see an Ophthalmologist every year, if you can. They can see more than problems with your eyes.

I’ve had Keratoconus in both eyes for 25 years. In my right eye it’s barely noticeable, but it’s disabling in the left eye without a scleral contact. I’m lucky that mine isn’t very bad and doesn’t require a cornea transplant. I get being sensitive to your eyes and I agree, don’t ever put off any eye procedure. By all means, get multiple opinions, but don’t put it off.
Cataract surgery is one of the issues that really angered me. My eye doctor told me for years it was coming. When it finally happened, I was able to reduce the overall power in my contacts and my vision was better than it had been in years. When I asked her why we waited so long, she replied, “insurance”.

So glad you're doing better. Thanks for posting this. I forgot the Amsler Grid thing that I had been using to check for AMD, so now I have it again. Thanks.

Hi Bob,

Be very glad that you are gaining vision back. I had a similar surgery. but the surgeon took too much tissue with the pealing of the membrane. Plus the surgery caused a 'Fast growing' cataract to form. So it was back into surgery for me. My ability to go bird-watching has dropped. Think I'll work on "Birdlistening" one hears more than one sees.
