Free Studio Manager by DVDVideoSoft.com. It lets you download and upload YouTube videos and convert them to mp3, iPhone, PSP, iPod, 3GP, burn or convert CDs, DVDs, and much more. It's free and VERY easy to use, the easiest I've found. The installation file may come bundled with unnecessary toolbars, so pay attention when installing to tell it NO when it asks you if you want to install them. Otherwise, just uninstall any toolbars if you miss it.

To be clear, the VidToMP3 site accomplishes the same thing without installing anything to your computer, and it works on Windows as well as Mac and Linux.

I use Orbit Downloader & it rocks. Pretty much universal, I can say.

You said - "MP3 is the standard for audio and video files". I think MP3 is only for audio. Please check that out.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Quite right! I fixed that in the article.

Am I right in saying that this could be used to put music on my iPod legally without paying?

For those who want to save the video AND the audio, there is a very simple solution. (You must have the Links or Bookmarks toolbar enabled in your browser first, however.)

Go to http://keepvid.com/ , and drag the bookmarklet at the top of the page to your Bookmarks toolbar. The next time you want to save a YouTube video (it works with a couple other sites, too), copy the video's address from the address bar, click on the KeepIt bookmarklet, and paste the address in the box on the page that comes up. Click the "Download" button in the blue box (not in the advertisement), fill out the Captcha box, and hit Submit. On the next page, there will be two links labeled "Download." Right-click the second one (should say "video.mp4 - High Quality 480x360" after it), and then click Save Target As. Save to wherever you want the file.

I've found that VLC player is the best player for the resultant MP4 files. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

There seems to be one glitch with KeepIt. After downloading several videos in a row, I'll start getting an error message on the KeepIt page. Once I clear my Temp Internet Files, however, I can download again.

If I wish to record a music track from a video, I use the Easy Audio Capture, provided in Windows 7 (gadgets). I have had no problem doing it. Many people don't know about it. The Easy Audio Capture must be set up correctly to perform the task and easy to figure out.

The latest version of Real Player has the ability to download complete videos from YouTube and other streaming sites. When installed, a mouseover the video screen causes a tab to pop up at the top of the frame, with the message "Download this video".

It won't download protected videos - such as the Daily Show though.

If you use Firefox, you can also install the DownloadHelper add-on. It downloads videos from numerous sites in flv format, and I think AVI is an option as well.

This works well if you use the Firefox browser.

Video DownloadHelper (firefox add-on)

It can download, convert to other formats, etc. Works for video and audio from lots of different sites.

I have Vista and I can't record what I hear using Audacity 1.3. When I look at the device toolbar, there is no option that says "What you hear." Where do I find that? Thanks.

EDITOR'S NOTE: This page may help with the missing "What You Hear" selection problem, which others have also experienced. http://gecsoft.blogspot.com/2008/07/audacity-missing-what-you-hear_11.html

Thanks for the reference to gecsoft.blogspot.com. I still can't get Audacity to record what I hear.

I went to the Control Panel>Sound>recording and "Show Disabled devices" and "Show disconnected devices" are checked. But no icon named "Stereo Mix" appears. Just Microphone, Rear Mic, and Line in icons are in the box. Is there anything else I can do? Thanks.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Quality might not be the greatest, but you could set it to Microphone, and record that way.

Hi Bob, some time ago you published an article about Tunebite as Audio- & Video-Converter on your site. Today Tunebite is also a YouTube Downloader and YouTube to MP3 Converter in one Freeware Windows Software. As Downloader Tunebite can automatically download and convert in one step the YouTube Videos. This works also very well as Hulu Downloader. Even the live video streaming of Netflix movies can be captured with the new Tunebite. After downloading of Videos and Movies you can easily convert the FLV Flash Videos or RTMP-E videos to WMV, MP4, AVI or 3GP. May be you can give Tunebite a extra review.

EDITOR'S NOTE: I think you just did!
