I prefer the simplicity to Google and IXQuick. Bing page is way to distracting.

Google is doing some things in the political arena that I don't care for so I'm moving away from their products. Bing's ok, but I really like DuckDuckGo for searches.

The Search Engine Wars ... I have been a Google user, for about 10 years now ... But, in all honesty, my favorite Search Engine was WebCrawler. I know, that is going way, way back in Search Engine Wars. I just LOVED the simplicity of WebCrawler and the results, were spot on. Today's WebCrawler just isn't the same, as it was, it has changed and not for the better.

Everyone, I knew at that time, was recommending the new Google. I wasn't a fan of Netscape, it was just too complicated, for my needs and taste. So, after the "learning curve", I began using Google and basically, have stayed with it, all these years. Oh, on occasions, I try other Search Engines, like Ask.com or DuckDuckGo or Altavista or Yahoo or Alexa or Lycos or Go.com ... But, I just seem to go back to Google. As for AOL search engine ... I hate AOL and haven't looked back, since, I left AOL back in 1998.

I have even tried Bing ... And, can't stand it. It's too glitzy, for my needs and since, I am more a Geek, than a Newbie ... I want a simple interface, to deal with ... Google gives me that, simple interface.

Microsoft has no credibility with me.

I've been using Bing when I found Google shares everything about me... We should all make an alias for ourselves... really! Anyway, I agree 100% with the guy searching for "Porsche" and gets hundreds of other car ad's... If we were in Lunux, we could use "grep 'Porsche' !> SrchRes . That way we'd have a file, SrchRes, with ONLY Porsche in it... but I guess we're all stuck with DOS for our OS... and that's a drag!

Approximately six weeks ago, I decided to delete Google. Every time I went to Google, ASK.COM would also appeared. I tried to delete ASK with all sorts of programs. Never successful. So I did the delete and then about three later I reinstalled Google. It's now working well and without additions that I did not request. I also continue to use Microsoft from time to time but find Google more accommodating. I also use Microsoft Office, which I like.

I use Google 90% and Bing 10%. The thing that I dislike about Google is,if I do a search about "Microwaves", every web site I go to after that search, there are adds for microwaves...Over and over...

I have collected about 50 different search engines. If I'm looking for something on one & I am unable to obtain the information, I try another one.

I have used Google for years and have always preferred it. However it seems that how they show your search results has changed recently as the results do not seem to be as relevant. Also if you do a search and then click on a link then use back in the browser (to edit the search phrase) the search results are missing which means you have to retype it in.

When Google decided that it was not in "my" best interest to be able to look up firearm and ammunition related subjects, they totally lost me as a customer. I now go out of my way not to use anything Google related unless it is my last resort. Who appointed them God to be able to decide what I can look up or buy and what I can't?

EDITOR'S NOTE: What do you mean? I can search Google for "firearms for sale" or "winchester ammunition" and I get plenty of results.

I love reading these informative Rankin chronicles; and on this occasion must wholeheartedly agree with your aversion to MyCrowSift's sleazy mendacities about GooGull: as though they themselves have never gathered users' data and used or transferred it for pecuniary advantage!
But I am equally alarmed by GooGull's patent intention to monopolize control of all the world's communications media. In my opinion, this runs contrary to the original intended purpose of the inter-web: freely available access to information for all, not access controlled by some international unaccountable multimedia super-company!
I won't use BaceFook or Twaitor (etcetera), as no "social" media is secure: everything published thereon is reportedly kept archived "forever".
I also object to (UK) VirginMedia's WebMail being "delivered" by GooGullMail: I now get TOTALLY UNWANTED links and pop-ups to GooGullmail or BaceFook "profiles" of email contacts, and a related increase in spammails.
I don't want my profile or contact details cross-referenced and spread across all continents by GooGull's data/media empire; but I have apparently no choice about this, nor any way to stop other folks' details being popped onto my screen.
However, we do all have to use search engines: and I opt for DogPile(.Co.UK), which I've set up through the InstantFox addon in my excellent FireFox browser, using search url: http://www.dogpile.co.uk/search/web?q=%q >
I am hoping that my choice of DogPile may mean some advert royalties are diverted from Garble's coffers, to some (any) smaller company; but I have previously found DogPile's results included a few useful extras not included on GooGull or BinGull.
In Britain we have a "Monopolies Commission", to guard against possible one-company control of any business sector.
Would a similarly-tasked international (UN?) media authority be feasible: to protect individuals' interests from the unhealthy monopolization of the internet and other media by a single (or only two) company (companies)?

I stopped using google/bing over a year ago. Both gather far too much info about you. I use duckduckgo and search anonymously.

I have very good results with "www.dogpile.com"
I believe that they search all of the other engines.

Bob,

Thanks for another great article. After being forced to live with Microsoft's buggy software products for years, now that I have a choice, I cast off the idea of anything Microsoft. I would be the last person to use Bing or buy the Surface, a Windows based phone or an Xbox. Unfortunately, I still use Windows 7, but I see a Chromebook in my future.

I do use Google for my primary searching but disagree on it showing me more of what I want v. what is in it's economic interest. I believe the results of my searches are listed in the order most favorable to Google.
Secondly, the ads I see on the results page and on sites I go to that also have ads all immediately reflect the retail searched I have made lately. To me, this means Google has pushed those ads by mining my activity.

I also find Bing to be too annoying to use, and I think MS's anti-Google campaign is beyond sleazy and unethical. I use Chrome unless a site requires IE - and this brings up my latest annoyance with MS. Since my last IE update (11.0.2), Bing comes up as my home page. I can change it during the session, sure, but when I load IE the next time - Bing is back. I can probably fix it with REGEDIT, but for now I'm just avoiding IE whenever possible. Despite its not being perfect , Google is my go-to choice.

I hate Google, for over a year I used Bing more than any. For over 5 years I used Altavista and still do occasionally. I don't care about the glitz, I get better results without Google.

I have a hobby website (provided by my ISP) and one of the pages had been used by tournament or league organizers all over the world over several years (round robin tables). Until recently only Google could find it. No thanks, bing.

Google DOES spy on it's users and sells their private data. Anyone who reads the inside scoop knows that!! I for one am NOT content to be manipulated by such criminals. It's common knowledge to those in the know. We won't surrender our privacy so easily. Don't even get me started on the issue of their hostile takeover of You tube!! There's a lynch mob forming as we speak, headed up by none other than the founder of You tube!!

EDITOR'S NOTE: Sigh... where is this "inside scoop"? I'm sure the FTC would love to know. Can you point me to one credible news story to confirm this "common knowledge"? Can you positively identify one person whose private data was sold?
