Well I am still looking. Got Mozilla firefox but it is absolutely hopless. Drops out ALL the time. Doesn't like Yahoo Mail or most of the bookmarks that I have. I must have something set wrong I suppose. IE slow as {I have optus cable }

Can't get Google maps to run in Google chrome or Opera. At this rate I will buy a typewriter and get over all this internet stuff. Then I am getting old {in my sixties}

EDITOR'S NOTE: Stu, when you say it "drops out" that makes me suspect a flaky internet connection, not the browser. Perhaps your ISP or the phone company can diagnose the problem, if any.

I have been using Flock and like it very much. What do others think of it?

That was a quick response thanks for that. I am running XP home SP3 and this problem only happens with FF. IE is OK. I disabled the crash reporter as I got tired of leaving comments. I got a popup that said FF does not support the Google toolbar so I will find out through Google how to get rid of it and see what happens. Thanks again Stu

Well I'm sticking with Firefox its much safer and fast!!. I tried Safari but it didnt satisfied me at all. I don't know its maybe because i dont wanna have 2 browsers. I tried IE 7 it suppose to be safer, but no, IE has a lot of problems and with time it becomes slower and you get a lot of spam which I hate, and those little pup ups that even the anti pop ups cant block. Well nice article Bob!! keep up the good work.

Telling us that this browser or that browser is "best", is a time wasting effort that some scribes create. Tell us why it's so great in your opinion. Don't try to pressure us into your state of mind. Those kinds of statements will never sell to those of us with common sense. And if you're going to post, please proof read and correct your spelling and grammatical errors. If you don't most of us will ignore what you're trying to say.

Catmoves--I am with you on proofreading before publishing. (I did note that your posting displayed two comma errors and one missing hyphen. Please don't be seriously irritated: I am OLD. I taught English 101 for decades, so I can be a one-issue old poop--not "normal." My colleagues and I obviously weren't very successful with many of the previous posters. With your message, I never had to guess what your thoughts were.)

P.S. I still like Firefox best.

It seems to me that Opera was the first to introduce tabbed browsing and the even better option of multiple windows without using tabs(I have 56 windows open now and that would be a nightmare with tabs).

I use the Avant browser to watch Netflix movies. It is a modified version of I.E. I do not like or trust I.E. because it is the dominate browser and therefore the biggest target for hackers. I use F.F. for everything else. Wish I could watch Netflix on it.

I learned computers on macs. Used to love Safari but lately FF has been my browser of choice. Seems faster and more intuitive (if that is possible). May be related to computer age (4+ years for each) and storage (10% available +/-). Latest version of OSX on both.

I have often wondered why FlashPeak's Slimbrowser -- an IE based browser -- doesn't get more exposure. I've been using it, now, for several years and are completely satisfied. It downloads and installs easily, as do the periodic updates. Many times I've tried other browsers, but I ALWAYS come back to Slimbrowser. The new Firefox comes close, has about the same lay-out, and has about the same user's "interactivity" with the program. I still prefer Slimbrowser. I also like the logical setup of the more complete/expanded drop-down menus of Slimbrowser. It comes with some very useful ad-ons. -- I don't make any money off it (as a matter of fact I just sent them my second donation), but give it a try !

Is anyone else who has Vista, able to use Firefox? It messes up the computer so bad, I had to get rid of Firefox. I wish when people suggest something new... that they would tell you what it is compatible with.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Julia, I'm sure there are MANY people (probably millions) who use Firefox on Vista. What specifically was the problem?

I wanted to point out a mistake that I've seen many make: Firefox pioneered tabbed browsing, which was recently picked up by Internet Explorer. This is not true...out of the current breed of modern browsers (pretty much, the list you have above), Opera implemented tabbed browsing a full year before Mozilla (at that time, I think it was the Mozilla Suite, now focused on Firefox). I thought Opera was the first with tabs, but I found that there were two others who had them before Opera.

Check out Tabbed browsing on Wikipedia for more information on that.

First with tabs seems to be something that Firefox has been (intentionally or not) trying to sell itself on...I don't dislike Firefox, I think it is a great browser and a wonderful alternative to IE. I want Firefox to succeed, but want it to do so honestly.

I find myself getting away from IE because of all the ERRORS I get on most of the web pages and the IE unable to open web page Operation Aborted thingy. Which I think is strange because in most cases the Web page is loaded and then I get the error and click "OK" and I lose the Web Page.

I started using Firefox up until I found that every time I did a search with Google it crashed.

I am now using the Apple's Safari with good service.... so far. However, I did have to go back to IE because the Window's copy of Safari was not listed to work with TurboTax.

EDITOR'S NOTE: I'm glad you found a browser that works for you. But I tend to think that your problems were caused by something else gone awry on the computer. Maybe a good malware scanner would help. See http://askbobrankin.com/should_i_buy_antispyware_or_antivirus_software.html

It just bugs me to hear IE and Microsoft slammed as a knee-jerk reaction whwnever browsers are discussed. I have Firefox on my machine, but I use it only when I come upon a site coded to work better with Firefox. I use Slimbrowser instead, it uses the IE engine. It has tabbed browsing, auto login, and loads of options which make surfing convenient.

Adding the similar functionality to Firefox weighed down the application significantly. Even relatively unmodded, Firefox still uses far more memory and CPU cycles than does IE or Slimbrowser (which actually uses less than IE).

As for security issues, that's what Windows Update and being vigillant are for. No browser is "secure" once you access the web.

(MOZILLA FIREFOX)

should 6th last word in following para be 'a' not 'an'?

As of January 2009, Firefox was used by about 21% of all Internet users, an figure which is increasing yearly.

This is complete rubbish. First of all, early versions of Opera pioneered tabs before Firefox did, so you've done some very spotty research on that front. Second of all, Microsoft is RUBBISH at "fixing security issues" that constantly plague Internet Explorer. Not to mention it took several YEARS for Internet Explorer to even adopt tabs after almost every other browser had. Oh and let's not forget that Internet Explorer is by far the SLOWEST browser out of the 4 largely used browsers today: Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, and Opera. Not to mention it uses the most system resources, and as of version 8.0 is STILL not fully compatible with CSS 2.1, which is just pathetic and SAD with the advent of CSS 3 and the fact that Safari 4 has already passed the Acid test 100% for the first time ever by a browser within its class.

And by the way, Internet Explorer does not make up for 65% of the market share today. It's more like 40 to 45%. Check your information, you'll see that it's wrong with little effort at all (which is more than you've obviously put into this article).

EDITOR'S NOTE: Okay, I fixed the "first with tabs" item, which others have mentioned here as well. My bad. On security, the bigger targets have the most arrows stuck in them. I think MS does a pretty good job of fixing the most serious bugs quickly. Firefox has a long list of security problems and patches over the years as well.

But on market share, you're wrong. Both HitsLink and Wikipedia report similar numbers for IE (about 67% now). You may be looking at the W3Schools numbers, which by their own admission do not reflect the general public, since the site caters to people who are "more interested in using alternative browsers than the average user."

I use FF with Vista and it crashes all the time. I can't tell if it's Vista or FF. My computer sometimes crashes and makes a beeping noise from inside, every time you try to use it until I hold the button in and make it turn off. My notebook, which is not that old is so slow, always has been and drives me crazy. I miss XP. Now FF seems to be letting in a lot of pop ups. :(
