I have AVG 8.5 and tried to download 9 as it says at the side of my AVG window but it doesn't accept my license number. Does this mean the upgrade is not free?

EDITOR'S NOTE: If you're talking about the paid version, then I don't think the upgrade is free. The free version, of course, would be a free upgrade.

AVG Internet Security just received the most recent Virus Bulletin 100 award (November). AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 9.0 was rated more highly than Microsoft's product in a late October online review by PC Magazine. Both AVG products contain AVG LinkScanner (also free to home users). It provides real-time safe surf capabilities. linkscanner.avg.com

I have been using AVG Free for at least five years and I have never had a virus that was not cured by this unbelievably FREE program! I love it and recommend it to everybody.

I have used prior versions without any problems. This new version greatly slows down web use. Often when clicking from one site to another using an embedded link nothing happens.
I have switched to Avira.

Hello Bob
Hmmm, I do so enjoy your updates and how opportune that you report on my AVG Commercial v9 today! Just when I have had that naughty virus "Ahsan Manan Khan Bhutta" and my favourite antivirus program actually let it through and MISSED it! However I must say that AVG Technical are spot on with their support... I am currently getting advice and will hopefully get rid of it very soon. I am an avid advocate of AVG - have used it faithfully in the free version for many years and now pay for the full version. In this day and age - you can't be too careful on the 'net.
Great info as usual Bob - keep up the good work... you have solved so many little nagging issues for me over the years.
Kind regards
Helen (an Aussie) living now in Dubai!

I have been a fan of AVG for several years - esp in college where a free anti virus was welcome. But and I have read on a web page that it is not without problems. I downloaded 9.0 along with the tedious microsoft updates and my computer got hung on the logging off screen. I do not have roxio ar much on that computer and think it was AVg - almost a disaster save the hard reset.

Bob,
I have used AVG for several years and have been well satisfied with AVG 8.5. However, the requirements for AVG 9.0 are 512 mgs Ram and a 1.8 Ghz processor. Since my computer has exactly 512 mgs Ram and a 1.50 Ghz processor, I have decided to stick with the AVG 8.5 as long as possible. Before upgrading, potential users of AVG 9.0 might want to consider the necessary requirements, which I found posted on the AVG free forum website.

I just updated to AVG9 and now having problems in Outlook program. It seems to not rememeber if you check mark an email address as ok, for the next time the same address email comes in it goes to the junk box all over again. plus i got a virus on the 8.5 version and they want to charge me for telephone support, BS and i hate trying to understand their language by emails... but thinking about going back to Nort, plus AVG's firewall is worse than Microsofts and this has been told to me by many top computer people!
Oh well, nothings perfect!
Thanks!
PS: is there a telephone number for your support Bob?

Since upgrading to AVG 9 free, my Malewarebytes program stopped working. I tried a fix I found on line. Still not working. MalewareBytes has saved me in the past when AVG and all others failed. Not very happy about that. I may look for another antivirus program.

I had AVG 8.5. I renewed my license and upgraded to 9.0. I do see a considerable increase in speed of the scans. They are much faster now. I have never got a virus or any other problems on my 3 computers. ( I have the Family pack paid version for 3 computers). I trust and do recomend AVG 9.0. I had no install problems. What I did was download AVG 9 then run the AVG Removal tool, then restarted my computer and installed AVG 9. This worked great.

I've been a fan of AVG free version for several years and promoted it to others. Now, however, I might be singing a different tune. I downloaded the latest version 9.0 and it brought my pc to a slow crawl becuase of one of its new features that makes a list of files previously scanned. I have uninstalled 9.0 and will wait awhile to see if the problem gets fixed.

Hi Bob.
I never used AVG, but my syster use it, she said that is OK, but sometimes a virus can pass through AVG and install in her machine.
I prefer NOD32, it is better in my opinion.

Sorry if I made any mistake, English is not my natural language.

Daniel.

Nice program, I've been using it for a number of years, at work and at home, but I think it is starting to be too much of a good thing. My main complaint is that not always is easy to find the setting needed to disable features that otherwise serve only to slow down the computer, mainly when browsing or checking mail. And scans are so slooow that often I need to turn them off and I would like and automated way to turn them on again, otherwise I keep forgetting to do so. I know, I'm getting old...

I have been using AVG Free for years with no problems. Until AVG 8.5. After upgrading from 8.x to 8.5 my computer slowed to a crawl, for all apps but especially for web related work. Upon investigation I found one of the AVG processes (I don't remember which) was using all available memory. This process occasionally dropped its memory chunk and the computer ran normally. But usually after a few moments the process would grab all memory again. I like AVG, but until they fix this I will use something else. I still use XP sp3 and will continue to do so for the immediate future.

Hi, I used AVG for years then I started getting nasty viruses that AVG had missed, I was told by a friend that when AVG sold out to another company the new company put a back door in the product to report back to the new owners, and the virus makers used this to get the nasties through, I swapped to " Comodo " and have not had any probs at all.

EDITOR'S NOTE: This "back door" stuff is silly rumor mongering, or perhaps even deliberate lying. AVG is produced by Grisoft, and has been since 1992.

I have used AVG happily for years - but I'm unsure about version 9. I upgraded to 9 on one Windows XP PC here, and two adverse things happened immediately:

1. I couldn't shut the system down - Firefox was reported as "still running" - though it had been shut down. Other programs have randomly "hung" at shutdown as well. I had to hold the power button down in the end - and that has happened multiple times now.

2. Boot-up times went up by a factor of three or four. AVG is doing something during the boot that brings the PC to a crawl.

I'm thinking I might skip AVG 9 on my other PCs and go to another solution - Malwarebytes, perhaps

I, too, started having computer problems immediately after upgrading AVG. I spent two frustrating days waiting for pages to load and having to stop programs with Cntrl-Alt-Del until I found a message board discussing a work-around. I shut down the unnecessary Link Scanner thingie and experienced a wonderful increase in speed. My AOL software is seriously affected by something still, and I don't know what to do about it. I have used AVG Free for years and wish they would just stick to Anti-Virus applications and leave the bells and whistles to others.

As an IT professional who has used and recommended AVG to others for many a year, I must say I am rather disappointed with AVG 9 -

1. After installing 9.0 to replace 8.5 you would assume things would at least be roughly the same, if not slightly easier to use. Wrong. After a restart, you will now be met with a Windows Defender error stating that it failed to start because it is incompatible with AVG 9.

2. Even with a fast computer, normal web browsing is SERIOUSLY slowed down thanks to the new LinkScanner feature. Whilst I sure it provides more protection against viruses etc, it is perhaps a larger trade-off than necessary. Luckily this feature can be turned off.

3. There is now no easy way to shutdown or turn off AVG. Before, a simple right-click -> Exit was enough but that option no longer exists.

As a freeware program, I guess we can't really complain since it is excellent when it works properly, and provides good protection for most day-to-day use. However I just feel that this latest version is a major step backwards, in terms of practicality and user-friendliness.
