Firefox 4 causes my computer to randomly reboot itself. Firefox 5 does the same. Running XP SP3 on an HP xw4400 Workstation.

I have been looking over some reviews, though none are really 'complete' reviews, yet. I am still using FF3.6, simply because I can't use my favorite Add-Ons with FF4. So, I doubt that FF5 would be compatible with my Add-Ons.

The one thing that interests me, is the "Do Not Track" aspect of the new version. From what I have read, I believe that "Do Not Track" is in FF4. but it is 'buried' & difficult to find.

As far as faster, I am not impressed with that. Bottom line, you only get as much 'speed' out of your broadband, that your ISP allows. I am limited up to 6.0 Mbps. So, speed is not an issue for me.

The reviews have been saying that less resources are being taken, with FF5. I don't see a lot of resources being 'taken' with FF3.6. I will wait until the 'rush' is over & there are 'fixes' or corrections. }:O)

I installed it and it was a disaster. Not only were MOST of my addons disabled, after I logged off for a few minutes I went to log on again, and all I got was a blue bar with the red in the upper right had corner. I tried over and over and nothing. Finally I got it to open into a normal window, but it was blank...totally white. I had to go in and delete F5 and then download FF4. Then things were back to normal. I won't be downloading FF5 until I'm forced to.

I don't even know what version Firefox I have, but I love it! SO much better than IE. I probably will upgrade to 5 soon. I don't use most of the add on's mentioned.

FF4 crashed on my PC w/Win XP all the time, but the iMac version works just fine. I've switched to FF5 on my PC desktop, and the only add-on that is not yet compatible is the McAfee Site Advisor.

That's the first line I read in your email.
Just a 10 year gestation period...

I'm sticking with 3.6.17 because version 4 was clunkier than IE. Not to mention the bloat - thought for a minute there that MS had bought them out the browser was so bad.

When they finish 'beta' testing on users, I'll consider changing over. For now, my version works just fine.

Installed 5. Disliked it immediately. Uninstalled Firefox. R-installed 4.0. Works Fine.

Will wait as you suggested - possibly for 5.??? if they are re-issuing every few weeks.

Keep up the good work.

Installed Firefox 5 on June 21, 2011. Noticed little difference in FF5 and FF4. A few minor problems at first, but now everything is fine.

Running 3.6.17, which works spectacularly!

I installed FF4 on my system as well - something that Mozilla said was impossible! I must be a miracle worker then as they both run fine individually.
However I will NOT switch to over to FF4 as it doesn't support the addons I use, I only put it on to see the differences and how it functions. I am not impressed at all with FF4.
So, I certainly won't be going for FF5 - I won't even bother installing it until 2012 or so, until they get it to work almost properly.
The reason I like FF so much are the addons I can customize it with, but if the new versions don't run the addons I use, there's zero reason for me to switch to it.

I was asked if I wanted to upgrade, then told certain add-ons wouldn't work, so I declined. However, the next time I started the computer there was a msg. saying that FF was updating. No option to decline. One thing I did not like before this latest update is that regardless of whether I individually closed every tab open before closing down FF, it still insists that I restore my last session before I can do anything in a new session.

Went to install FF5, it did warn me that it is incompatible with Avast, cancelled install.

I am running FF5.0 on a Win7 64 bit OS and it seems to be fine. I use AVG Free 2011 v10.0.1388 and it has not had a problem either.

The only issue I had was what someone else already addressed. I did not ask to be upgraded and just the other day it upgraded itself! If Mozilla is forcing us to upgrade, it might be time for a different browser, methinks.

I seem to be alone in this, but to me it seems unfair that programmers have to rewrite their code to be compatible with each new browser that comes out.

If they write a program that complies with the rules currently in operation then it should be up to the browser programmers to make sure that that their upgrade still works with the old add-ons.

Well if i was born at the end of June we can also say it died the first of July. I never saw such a disasterous release and I have been in the cheering section for Firefox since it began.

By my clock it worked all of twenty minutes before beginning to depart this life. Had it only fell on it's sword without tearing other things up I could forgive it. But no, it began deleting files that had nothing at all to do with the internet per se. It may set a record as the fastest file deleter on earth. I was watching the free space grow on a 2tb drive as fast as the drive discs could spin.

I hit the emergancy panic button and booted out of the mess and then spent hours examinging all the damage it had caused. Incredible.

You might ask if this was a true direct from the hot hands of Mozilla download....yes it was. A
pox upon their house.

After years of teaching business/computer comm. at a major university I had worn my students ragged about having many, many backups. Thank goodness I followed my own advice. I have two servers with eight 1tb drives each humming away in the next room. I spent all night and today restoring from mirrored images and would say I have about 95% of what Firefox 5 destroyed back on line. It's the five percent missing that worries me.

Did I put faith in FF 4 again? NO!

Summary: I would guess some pencil pusher thought 'we really ought to keep up with Chrome, issue new versions every few days, maybe every few hours.'

I used to joke with a dear friend about the cost of Leica cameras vs somewhat cheaper high end Nikons etc. He always said....sure you Nikons and Bronicas are cheaper...they know what their product is worth.

Beware of gypsies bearing gifts for free....I would tell him were he still alive....I have learned.

Welcome back Mr Rankin..we missed you!

I like FF5 so far. (We're still running XP SP3, FYI.) It does seem faster than FF4. In reading through others' comments, I don't see that anyone has mentioned the app tabs--and that is the feature that I absolutely love in FF5! I have always used the Bookmarks Toolbar to have quick access to my Webmail accounts, Google Calendar, facebook, etc. With FF5 you can surf to a site (e.g. the sign-in page for Yahoo Mail), right-click on its tab, and click "Pin as App Tab." It gives you a small gray tab with the Yahoo! icon on it, next to the orange Firefox drop-down menu button at the top left. I have a tab for every site that I frequently access now (including this one! :) )

PS: I forgot to mention something. I found that when I use CCleaner, it deletes my app tabs in FF5--annoying. I learned that to avoid this you uncheck "session" in CCleaner for Firefox.

I didn't even know there was a TinyURL addon. I've been using a javascript bookmark for years to get TinyURLs in Firefox:

javascript:void(location.href='http://tinyurl.com/create.php?url='+location.href)

One-click TinyURL creation, without any of the overhead of an unnecessary addon.

Installed FF5 on a 64-bit Win 7 system. I was not forced to update: there is a place somewhere in the options for FF that allows you to be notified that an update is available, but you get to choose to download and install.

No problems with FF5. Loads very quickly. "Lost" only one add-on, which should be upgraded soon.
