Jott - Note to Self

Category: Cool Stuff

Jott is a cool new service that will convert your voice into email or a text message. Just call a toll-free number from your cell phone, and leave a voice message. Jott will translate your spoken words into text, and then forward the text to an email address or send a text message to a cell phone.

What is Jott?

Jott: Note to Self It took me a minute to wrap my head around the possibilities, but now I love having Jott. Here's an example... I use Jott when I'm away from home or in the car, to send myself a quick email reminder. Here's how it works: From my cell phone, I call 1-866-JOTT-123. Since I'm a member, Jott can identify me via caller ID. Jott says "Who do you want to Jott?" I say "myself" and then leave a message, up to 30 seconds. In a few moments, an email arrives in my inbox, with the text transcription of the message I spoke. Way cool, right?

Without Jott, I would have had to send a text message from my cell phone. And I find "typing" on a cell phone very tedious, even with T9 mode. It's also just a bit dangerous when driving to send a long text message. Not that *I* personally ever do any such thing, mind you. Ahem... At least not any more. Now I can use the hands-free voice-activated dialing feature of my mobile phone to call Jott and leave my message without ever lifting a finger or taking my eyes off the road.

Jott is great for those "note to self" moments, for making a quick grocery/todo list or sending yourself a reminder. But you're not limited to sending messages to yourself. You can use Jott to message a friend, co-worker, or even eliminate repetitive calls by emailing a group of people with a single Jott. Communicate quickly with the whole family, notify your team that the game was cancelled, or let your colleagues know about a new deadline.

Other Jott Features

Jott is great for sending a text message with your voice, but it can also interact with the Web. You can create Jott Links in your account that enable you to post to a Blogger, TypePad, WordPress, or Live Journal blog with your voice. If you're into Twitter, you can add a "tweet" by speaking your message to Jott. You can even use Jott to get an estimate of your house value from Zillow. Programmers can create their own Jott Links via a programming interface.

I'm sure that you can think of other uses for Jott, for those occasions when you want to send yourself a quick reminder, or communicate with a group of people. What could be easier than making a free phone call and just speaking your message? Jott is a free service that's currently in a public beta test. Give it a test drive, I think you'll like it as much as I do.

Can Jott recognize other languages, e.g. Danish?

EDITOR'S NOTE: It seems to be English only right now. The service is still in Beta, though.

Bob, this sounds very useful. Does Jott import Outlook distribution lists as well as single addresses?

EDITOR'S NOTE: Jott recommends you use a CSV file with your exported Outlook contacts.
