Is it genuine to subscribe to Limewire Pro or is it all a money making exercise for the providers?

EDITOR'S NOTE: The Pro version gives you extra features and faster downloads. It does NOT give you any additional rights to download copyrighted music. If you want popular music from well-known artists, LimeWire is not the right tool to do it legally. Try iTunes for that.

How do you put things on limewire?

EDITOR'S NOTE: You just start using it. Limewire will share your media files if you put them in the correct folder on your hard drive. You can check which files you’re sharing by clicking on the Library tab.

I used to have Limewire but uninstalled it because my conscience no longer allows to me download songs illegally. I have disposed of all CDs I burned with illegal songs on them. However, I do understand that it is possible to use Limewire to download some songs legally, the ones that are not copyrighted. How do I know which ones are legal when I search for them in Limewire?

EDITOR'S NOTE: Limewire won't give you that info. In general, if something is sold commercially, it is copyrighted. If you find a website for an independent band that's just starting, they may encourage you to download their music for exposure.

I have been using Limewire AND a program called ARES to download all my favorite music videos and MP3 files......But, now, ANY VIDEO (only video!) I download will not play correctly, and its Like it has Black Lines streaming through the video (I play the file on Windows Media Player) And the video plays upside down sometimes! PLEASE HELP!

EDITOR'S NOTE: If they play okay in another video player, it must be a corrupted source file. Some copyright owners are intentionally uploading bad/bogus copies of songs and videos to make it harder for people to use Limewire and other piracy tools.

EDITOR'S NOTE: If you delete any copyrighted songs you have no worries. Oh, and be sure to run anti-virus and anti-spyware stuff.

What are some of the tell-tale signs/parameters that would allow me to make a wise decision as to what file I can feel relatively safe downloading? Also, if I run an up-to-date spyware sweeper and an Antivirus through my downloads file before executing the files, I should be safe, right?

EDITOR'S NOTE: You should be safe from spyware and viruses. As for copyrighted materials, pretty much ANYTHING in the entertainment world created in the past 70 years should be avoided.

Songs, software, programs...all of these are really IDEAS. They're not apples, they're not antique clocks. If you have ONE IDEA, you can share it with 5000 people, for free, like Jesus did. The loaves and fishes metaphore.

EDITOR'S NOTE: First, it's not YOUR idea. If the OWNER of the idea wants to share it, fine. Second, didn't Jesus also tell us to "Render unto Caesar that which is due?"

Why do people not just pay for the darn thing? On iTunes, TV shows cost $1.99. Movies are $9.99, and you can burn it onto your own DVD later on. Songs are .99 cents!

I had Kazaa about a year ago, but uninstalled the program after a couple of days. So, has the program been deleted from my system completely? Will the files that were downloaded still continue to be shared with others?

EDITOR'S NOTE: No file sharing will continue. But I recommend a good spyware scanner to see if anything nasty remains... See http://askbobrankin.com/should_i_buy_antispyware_or_antivirus_software.html

What if you deleted downloaded files, but have not uninstalled kazaa, would files still be able to be shared?

EDITOR'S NOTE: Check your Kazaa settings to see which folder is supposed to be shared. If it's empty, there should be no problem, except wasted CPU and RAM resources.

Is it possible to recover downloaded files/songs from your hardware even if kazaa was uninstalled? I deleted the program after it made my computer run slow, but there was a particular song that I can't find anywhere and don't remember the name to.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Possibly... see http://www.askbobrankin.com/recover_deleted_files.html

I downloaded "Restoration," but my file was completely empty and there was nothing to "restore by copying". I don't understand why it was empty. why can't these files be found? shouldn't downloaded files/songs be on your hard drive permanently?

EDITOR'S NOTE: Sounds like you're referring to http://www.askbobrankin.com/recover_deleted_files.html -- The space occupied by deleted files may be overwritten, if you don't act fast. It's also possible that the program you download to recover a file will be stored in the same spot as your deleted file...

so, pretty much there's no way for me to get that file back?

EDITOR'S NOTE: Sounds like it got clobbered by other data.

hi bob i have a problem. i have limewire but it crashed and i get a pop up screen on my computer that says one or more necessary files appear to be invalid this is generally caused by a corrupted installation please try to downlod it again and i tried but i deleted the files off of the start menu and when i tried to download it it wouldnt finish because it said that the old version was still runing and now i dont know wat to do.

EDITOR'S NOTE: You'll need to kill off the old running version. If there is no icon on the taskbar, use Ctrl-Alt-Del to find the task and nuke it via Task Manager.

Hello Bob, I noticed that some of my personal Word files have been uploaded on LimeWire. How did this happen?

EDITOR'S NOTE: What makes you think so? Did you find them available for download from someone else? It's possible that you set your Limewire settings to allow this, but it's not the default.

Hi Bob, I had a file sharing program about 2 years ago, but like many of the situations above, I had to uninstall it because it made my computer run extremely slow. However, after reading all of this copyright stuff, I became paranoid and was just wondering whether legal action could be taken in the future by companies toward anyone that has ever downloaded any songs, games, or movies in the past?

EDITOR'S NOTE: Not likely, especially if you have deleted the offending content.

Bob, I read an article today about college kids who were sued for piracy because they were downloading music. Why would they sue them if they were not selling them to anyone? Also, I read about a grandpa who was being sued over his grandson downloading four movies by using a file sharing program and deleted them immediately. Why would they sue him if there was only four and if he deleted them immediately? Could legal action be taken for people who have deleted the content of their downloads and if so, how long afterwards? For instance, could someone be sued for deleting music or movies and have to worry about being sued for downloading something 5 years from now?

EDITOR'S NOTE: It's not always the SHARING of the content that's the issue. It's the STEALING of the content. If you download a movie or song that you would have had to buy, the creator is not getting paid for his or her work, right? As for how long after deleting can you be sued... it's anyone's guess.

99cents for a file copy of a digital song is ridiculous. I understand the reasons why they charge what they charge... added up, 10-15 tracks essentially equals the cost of a CD off the shelf. As long as everyone pays for downloading every track, they wouldn't lose any $$. Sure now you can pick and choose what that "virtual" CD would include for the cost... but I still think the industry needs to change with the technology and make it more affordable.

My Limewire no longer downloads videos, but it tackles audio just fine. Any suggestions? I uninstalled, downloaded the newest version, and I still have the same problem. It used to work just fine.

EDITOR'S NOTE: What happens when you try to download a video?
