Bought the most basic TomTom model available three and a half years ago - the TomTom One... it is brilliant! It has its moments of crashing and falling over and recovery is terrible as I never keep an up to date backup (yes I know, page one of the manual... Dohh)

I have kept the OS up to date, I have installed up to date maps... it is as good as if not better than any other TomTom model you can buy today - paid for itself a hundred times!

I might still be married had this unit been arround 11 years ago! Mind you my Psion and EnRoute did a fine job on our honeymoon in Ireland... LOL

I've used a lot of other GPS's (name it I used it) and I like my 720 the best. TomTom support stinks but I'm pretty good at fixing the problems myself.

I've used a TomTom throughout my 2-week vacation trip to central Europe this summer, and I must say, it was a god-sent! Maybe the maps are more complete and updated for Europe than for the U.S., and the satellite communication is better over there? True, there was drop-out in the alpine tunnels, but that's to be expected.

We've had all the same problems with our Tom Tom and MORE! Last night we were led down an alley that ended with a brick wall. We back out and tried again, only to be led down a one-way street, the WRONG way! Not the first time, either.
Today we are taking a hammer to the Tom Tom and buying a Garmin!

Does something ever just drive you so nuts you want to "bash" it against your steering wheel over and over and over and over? This is what I caught myself doing in traffic the other day with my TomTom. I am doing several dozen laps around a 5 block radius in rushhour in Charlotte North Carolina and despite USPS claims that there is a branch on said road - Tom Tom just jeeps me in the #$%#$^$%^ spin cycle as I hatefully like to call it. I hate it. I wish I could stand on my house and shoot at it from the room top. Ugh. (I have the ONE XL version)

I think the part I hate the worst is that I can never rely on it to find a poi from ANYWHERE and I have to do all the mapping myself so why did I pay for this $150.00 piece of #$%@????

So frustrated... keep your blog coming. It makes it sting less.

I bought a Tom Tom One XL when they were new at abaout 400 dollars. It was great for about two years. Then, it just quit working and there was no way of getting it repaired. Now I have Tom Tom on my Iphone and it is ten times the value. I think it cost around 90 bucks for the ap and it does a lot more.

At first I loved my TomTom. Then after only 2 months it started losing satelite signal. I called TomTom. Over the course of the next 5 or 6 calls we did everything from warm boot, add a gps fix program, uninstall all the software and reinstall. Still nothing worked. Finally when it came to the discussion of replacing the TomTom they informed me that the serial number indicates that devices' warranty had expired. The rep actually told me the warranty is from the time of manufacturing not the time of purchase.

I had a $100 Garmin that never failed me. I upgraded to a $250 Tom Tom that takes forever to get satellite signals and then loses them more often then not and gives terrible directions. For sure my next one will be an inexpensive Garmin again.

I have navigator 6 on my pocket pc. its not that old, but I cannot upgrade to mobile 6. So tom tom maps only upgrade with navigator 7. I cannot upgrade to navigator 7 so my tom tom is completely un-upgradable and tom tom said much the same when i said maybe i need another make.
So stuff you tom tom, I will look elsewhere. any recommendations for another make in europe?

I want to join the I hate Tom Tom club. Bought a Western Europe map download that will not load on my GPS and have spent hours on hold for tech support that does not have a solution but they keep refusing to just provide a refund and let me get on with my trip.

Garmin Nuvi is the way to go. I had their cheapest model and it worked like a charm. It was awesome. Excellent POIs, found satellites in seconds and even stayed connected 3/4 of the way through tunnels. My new TOmTOM xl, even with regular updates, takes forever to gain a signal, takes forever to redirect, its a piece of junk. The software sucks, pois suck, it's just a shi**y piece of equipment. Go Garmin Nuvi, they are the best.

I owned a Garmin nuvi and it was a piece of junk, would work 50% of the time.
2 years ago i bought a TomTom 730 and its the best gps i have ever owned, my friends are all amazed at how well it functions and how many functions it has. They have all since dropped the Garmins and now own TomToms.
Bring your Garmin over to play and I'll show you what a gps should do with my TomTom.
Not only can a TomTom do 4 times as many functions as a Garmin, a TomTom can do them all twice as fast. This whole post wreaks of Garmin fanboyism...
From my experience the only place a Garmin wins over a TomTom is in Customer support, Garmins support is second to none.

I bought a TomTom specifically for those times when I'm trying to drive to an unknown location on the other side of town. Ha! In the middle of the drive (nope, I hadn't touched the thing), it decided that my car was in another state, changed all the streets, and that was that. HUH? The whole point of getting the thing was to prevent getting lost--not to give me directions around a state I've never been to, located 500 miles away! Better off with a paper map.

I have a TomTom XXL 550M and I was traveling from Indianapolis to Rockford, Illinois. The TomTom kept insisting that I take I-65 up to Chicago and then across to Rockford. It is 30 miles shorter to take this route but it is by far not the quickest. I-74 to I-39 to Rockford is much quicker. I tried multiple times to get the unit to choose this route and all along my route it kept wanting me to go across country to reach I-65 north. I knew better...but what if I was in an unfamiliar area? I can't trust my GPS from TomTom!

I have a Tom Tom and one small but very important point they failed to mention was the fact that you CANNOT use a "letter" in an address field. So, if you are trying to find say 36W839 Silver Glen Road, St. Chalres, IL you will NOT be able to do it. Tom Tom does not have this capability, making it basically USELESS in the Midwest.

Ours directed us thru little one-way streets and two lane roads and thru a "BAD" unfamiliar area instead of sending us to the Interstate Highway. Four hours there by TomTom two hours back by paper map and intuition.

Got a TomTom550XL for Christmas with free lifetime map upgrades. 2 failed upgrades =1 in March with hours of waiting for customer service and tech support and one this month - June I have a lump of plastic with no usable maps again, and no room on it to reload. The tech tips from the first go round did nothing. I will stick to paper maps and a plain GPS, much easier to use.
