Blessed Silence - so appropriate for the last day of a hellish election cycle! |

Thanks Bob. Initially it wouldn't install so I closed all other open pages except the one required to install this, and then it appeared to install OK. I look forward to not seeing the junk I don't want to buy anyway. |

Just mute your speakers until you want to hear stuff. |

Thanks so much, Bob,autoplay is a maddening feature, I just turned it to false after reading your article. As someone else said this is "an early Christmas present." |

Thank You. I never would have known about the chrome extension without you. |

Thanks, Bob. It is indeed jarring. I learned to look through my tabs to see the one with the speaker, so it was easy to find the culprit but now I apparently won't have to bother. |

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have removed Flash from my browser due to its security weaknesses. This autoplay 'feature' was driving me crazy. Now I'm down to just these stuttering "chiclet" keys on this laptop keyboard... :) |

Self playing video and site image loading kill my tablet. I cannot even read a text page because every 3 seconds another image/video pops and moved the text up or down and before the page eventually fully loads, the browser gets overloaded and shuts down. This in on an Android tablet. |

Enhance this with a little program called AdBlockPlus...It's free |

What I need is something to stop the auto-play videos from LOADING! I am on a metered connection and each video chews up my data usage. I have looked at things you mentioned but they don't stop the video from loading, just playing. Any suggestions? |

If you use Chrome, Right Click the Tab that's making the noise and, in the drop down box, select Mute Tab. |

Thank you so much, Bob! Autoplay is one of the most annoying things about surfing the net. |

and they wonder why people use ad-blockers |

I'm in the same situation than @David, I'm looking for something that stops videos from 'loading' (not only stop 'playing'). When I was using Flash, that was very easy (it was 'click to play' and load), but with HTML5 is a nightmare, the content loads anyway, you play it or not. If you are on a metered 4G connection, this is an important issue. Any suggestion?... |

In Firefox, Right Click the Tab for the page with the offending sound, then Click "Mute Tab" (the second option down). This won't stop it from running, but it will silence it. |

Just turning off your speakers doesn't help if there is one thing you actually want to listen to, and have one or more other things playing along in the background. I also have a metered connection, and am annoyed by the automatic loading. |

Good! I just added "Disable HTML5 Autoplay" to Chrome... hope it works :) |

Thank you, Bob. Not only are unwanted videos annoying, but in the middle of the night they can be downright scary. OK, so maybe I'm a nervous person, but I am grateful for the information on how to shut it off in Firefox. |

Thanks or the tip, Bob. This happens every AM in firefox. Now maybe not. The other browser I use is Opera. It works better than FF for many things. You should have quite a few people clicking on your ''Buy Bob a snickers'' link after this tip. I bought you a health bar last week. Owe you more. |
