The AskBob website was a busy place in 2011 -- over 340 new articles were published this year, pushing the total number to over 1100! Readers streamed in from all over the world, and since I'm a numbers guy, I scanned the server logs to find the most popular articles, based on your clicks, views and recommendations. Here are ten of the top articles for you to review. I hope you'll read each one and leave your own comments... |
Free Internet Faxing
Why use an expensive and complicated fax machine when there are so many Internet alternatives? Some even allow you to send and receive faxes online for free. Here's a roundup of free Internet fax services...Free Online College Courses
"What's the deal with online college courses... how can they be offered for free? Is there some catch involved, and will I get actual college credit if I take free online college classes?"Is Chrome the Best Browser?
"I'm thinking of switching to the Google Chrome browser. I like Firefox, but lately it has been unstable on my computer, and seems to get bogged down. Yesterday I had to shut it down because it was consuming 825MB of memory! My friend says Chrome is the best - what is your opinion?"MagicJack Phone Service
"Is Magic Jack phone service for real? I've seen commercials for Magic Jack, a device you can plug into your computer for really cheap phone service. It sounds too good to be true... is MagicJack a scam, or does it really work?"Free Satellite TV on PC?

Is there a competent replacement for Palm Desktop? I have been using Palm Desktop since 1998; that's 13 years of client contacts, notes, appointments, etc. I use it as my daytimer to keep track of appointments, past, present and future. I can find things readily on it. The notes are perhaps the most important part since I keep track of every sales call and appointment there. It is an invaluable source of client and personal info for me.
I have to keep it on my Powerbook G4 with OS 10.4.11 for that reason alone. While I can transfer the info to my iMac OS 10.6.8, I can't make any changes to Palm Desktop.
Also my aging laptop has programs and plug-ins that are no longer available and I can transfer images from my iMac to the G4, do whatever is necessary to them that I can't do on my iMac (I'm a photographer) and then transfer them back. Sure it's a pain, but it will work, albeit slowly.
Sometimes necessity forces one into being at least a partial Luddite.
