You might have mentioned that nowadays, installing a fax-modem in a computer is as simple as plugging something like a Trendnet TFM-561U in a USB port...

Are any of these available to UK residents?

Renaud Olgiati I believe the Trendnet TFM-561U fax-modem is for dial-up connections only - and is not compatible with cable broadband :-(

"Windows has a Fax and Scan app"
depends upon version of Windows. I am still using Vista Home Premium. "The Windows Fax Printer Driver is included in the following editions of Windows Vista: Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate." Money is tight and may get a Win10 machine in another .5 years.

If you are needing a HIPAA compliant fax, SFax at https://www.scrypt.com/ has worked well for me. At the time I started with them, they were the cheapest HIPAA compliant internet fax I could find. They were more than happy to do a Business Associate agreement with me (a HIPAA requirement). It is definitely not free, but it has served it's purpose.

Not to question your veracity, but changing the ".efx" to ".tif" on efax files doesn't work for me. Have they made a change to their files recently to prevent this?

For eFAX, I agree that their Messenger software is not required to read these attachments. However, I wouldn't change the extension of the attachment or use Windows Photo Viewer because that's a pain each time you receive an eFAX. Attached faxes from eFax can be opened and read using Irfanview. To do that, install Irfanview from here (http://www.irfanview.com/) and set the Windows extension default for ".efx" files to open with Irfanview. (In Windows 7 you do that by going to "Control Panel" - "Default Programs" - "Associate a file type or protocol with a program".) When Irfanview opens these files, it will recognize it as a fax and ask if you want to change the extension to the standard fax extension (".tif") and it does it for you.

One might consider buying a multifunction printer (print, copy, scan, fax), the prices of which have come down quite a bit, particularly if you mainly need the copy and scan functions. You don't need a separate fax number--I just tell my very occasional fax senders to call back on my home landline (okay, I guess that method doesn't work if you've ditched your landline) and hit "receive" when the phone rings. The multifunction printer of course also lets you send as well as receive faxes.

I am using for many years Innoport's Marquee plan for incoming faxes. $5.95/month for 500 minutes. Philadelphia metro area code (267).
PDF or TIF format, you can designate up to 4 email accounts for simultaneous delivery. I love it.

Sheri, of course you need a telephone line to send faxes.
But this can be connected to your fax-modem even if your Internet service comes by cable.

Faxaway info is outdated - It's pre-pay - $10 load up, subtracts from as faxes are sent/received, then reloads when balance gets low. Wish it were still $1.

I suppose you know that k7 is going the way of the fax machine. Here is their response to my email.

"Hello,

Thanks,

Unfortunately, eFax will close down its free service soon.

The fax number associated with your eFax account will soon be unavailable with your eFax Free service. If you'd like to keep this fax number, you may do so by upgrading to our eFax Plus service by August 13, 2016 for a monthly subscription fee of $16.95 per month.

Efax free is going away as of 8/31/2016. I was notified that my number would be disconnected on 8/31/2016 unless I upgraded to efax plus at $16.95 a month. no thanks since i only receive less than 20 faxes a year.

As of November 18, 2016 I still seem to be enjoying FREE eFax and their site appears to still offer it..... https://www.efax.com/efax-free ... just be sure to select the FREE option, not the Free Trial of the paid version.

After losing my efax free number, again, I didn't mind paying $1 a month for a stable service. Looked at Faxaway, but was happier with the interface and customer service with One Suite. You have to preload at least $10, but they deduct $1 per month until done.

I signed up for the FREE efax Free account (not the trial version of the other paid options). I got the email with the activation link. This is the page I see: http://imgur.com/a/0v0w2. There's no fax number visible. So what do I do? I wasn't given a fax number nor a PIN.
