Free Internet Faxing With FaxZero
I need to send an occasional fax, but I don't want to buy a fax machine. Is there any way to send a fax directly from my computer, without a fax machine and a phone line? |
How to Send a Free Fax
Even if you don't have a fax machine, you can still send a fax from your computer. A free online faxing service called FaxZero makes it simple to send a fax from your desktop, laptop or smartphone. All you need is an Internet connection and an email address. Because FaxZero is web-based, there's nothing to download and it doesn't matter if your computer runs on Windows, Mac or Linux. With FaxZero, you can send a quick text fax, a Microsoft Word document, or a PDF stored on your computer.
Faxing is free if you're sending to any fax machine in the United States or Canada. So what's the catch, you ask? The service is supported by advertising on the FaxZero website and the FaxZero logo will appear on the cover pages of your outgoing free faxes. International faxing isn't free, but FaxZero offers very low rates to send faxes to almost any country in the world.
There are some limits to the free fax service. You can send a maximum of 3 pages per fax, and up to 2 free faxes per day. If you want to send longer faxes, a fee of $1.99 lets you send up to 15 pages. With the paid service, you get priority delivery and no ads on your cover page.
Here's how to send a fax online with FaxZero...
- Point your web browser to FaxZero.com
- Fill out the form with the Sender and Receiver information. Only those fields marked with an asterisk are required. You don't have to enter a Company name or the Sender's fax number. (Especially if you don't have one!)
- Be sure to enter a valid email address, because you'll have to respond to an email to confirm your outgoing fax.
- Select a document to send. Acceptable formats are PDF (Adobe), DOC (Word), or XLS (Excel).
- OR, enter the text of your fax in the input box. You can add basic formatting and select fonts with the controls above the text input area. Note that you can send a file OR text, but not both.
- Enter the Confirmation Code. This helps to prevent evil robots from sending faxes to the mothership.
- Click the Send Free Fax Now button.
Confirm Your Fax Transmission
You're almost done. Now check your email inbox and look for a confirmation request from FaxZero. Click the URL (web address) in that message to confirm that you want to send the fax. If you don't get the confirmation request, look in your spam/junk folder, or try adding support@FaxZero.com to your address book to reduce the chance that the confirmation request will get eaten by a spam filter. If you don't respond by clicking the confirmation URL, your fax will not be transmitted.
That's it. Now the shiny, high-tech computers at FaxZero will attempt to deliver your fax, and then send you an email to confirm if it was delivered or not. Wait... why do I say "attempt to deliver" the fax? Well, you might have entered the wrong fax number. Or that number might be busy for a long time. It could even have something to do with robots. But FaxZero will try five times to send your fax. Whether it was successfully transmitted or not, you'll be notified by email.
Yes, there are other free online fax services. But FaxZero was one of the first, and is still the best in my opinion. The creator of FaxZero is Kevin Savetz, a personal friend of mine, and one of the good guys on the Internet since the early days.
Keep in mind that many free Internet services have been forced to shut down due to abuse. So don't use FaxZero to send unsolicited fax advertisements, spam, or anything that's illegal, abusive, or offensive. If you have questions about privacy or technical issues, see the FaxZero FAQ for additional information.

If your computer includes a dial-up modem (which now-a-days should also have a fax function), you could just use the Fax Console in XP or the Fax and Scanning app in Vista and Windows 7. Fax Console can be a little hard to set up, but there are good instructions online.

I clicked on your FaxZero website to register for it. How come you say it's free to use FaxZero when the form says to enroll for only $10 per month?
EDITOR'S NOTE: You clicked on the wrong link. There is no need to enroll, register or pay a $10 monthly fee at FaxZero.

I have used another free e-fax service by MyFax. A couple years ago the company I worked for went out of business and I became unemployed. At first, when I had to fax out my resume, I went to a local store & paid to fax them. Then I heard about the free internet fax services and ended up choosing my fax free version. They also allow up to 2 faxes per day, up to 9 pages at a time (10 with cover sheet) and a maximum of 10 MB in size. They also email you a confirmation if the fax went through or not. I really liked this one and will use it again if I need to. At first I was a bit nervous & wondered if my faxes were really getting to where I sent them. I did end up getting some calls from employers for interviews, so I know it worked. You do not have to sign up for any other kind of service with them unless you want to.

I love FaxZero. I did away with long distance service on my land line. I use the $1.99 (no advertising) FaxZero when I need to send a non-local fax.

What about RECEIVING a fax? There used to be eFax, which would email you the fax result. Anything like that out there?
Thanks in advance,

For those having a hard time using faxzero, I would suggest http://www.GotFreeFax.com as an alternative. GotFreeFax.com allows users to send free fax online. It is more mobile friendly and it is easy to use. Plus, it does not add branding on your fax cover page.
