I don't think I get auto updates on my HP PSC 1410v printer. Mine is older and has been working fine with inexpensive remanufactured cartridges. I have a backup Canon printer, still in the box, and should get it set up but honestly don't print that much. I only use black ink to save money.

When I bought a second lot of generic cartridges on eBay for my Epson XP-225, the vendor enclosed a slip warning against allowing any updates from Epson - these then check for 'genuine' Epson cartridge chips and if not there, put up a message saying that printer will not work until their own cartridges are installed (at three times the cost!). This had happened with the first generic ones bought, but a roll-back cancelled the Epson update (I do weekly saves).

We recently purchased a new Kodak Verite Printer last November. It has electronics in the cartridge like the HP ones but they are cheaper and the ink lasts longer. No regrets.

I went through the same issues with my HP Printer!!! And has anyone noticed that YOU are getting Less and Less pages to Print, cause HP Keeps Cutting Back on the Ink Pages, but; keeps increasing the Cost! My Recommendation after a Day of research on Printers is, ''In the future, Buy or Purchase ''''BROTHERS'''' Printers! You can use Ink Cartridges other than Brothers and have ''NO'' Problems at all. HP I sense is on their WAY OUT!!!

Like Gillette, HP sells printers at or below cost in order to "force" using their brand of razor/ink. I have heard too many horror stories about aftermarket products leaking and I print too little to use anything but HP ink, and I buy wherever I can find the best price. However, I have had so much trouble with HP printers, especially all-in-one models, failing to handle paper, usually right after I bought a year's supply, that I switched to Brother the last time that happened, and so far, I'm happy with the decision, although the new Epson looks good. I'm also disgusted that every new HP model requires different cartridges, so that ink is obsolete before it can be used up. The hassle of cleaning rollers and the cost of paying to have it done is ridiculous! Especially since most of what I do print is on very high quality paper.

Gave up on HP and Epson years ago. Too many problems.
I now buy only Canon, older models. Easy to use software, and I can change the printhead myself if need be. I get my compatible ink from SwiftInk.com.
My i950 lasted 9 years of daily use with one printhead change.

That's very strange. This is pretty much what I got after I replaced my HP Deskjet D1560 carts. with Tesco (UK supermarket)brand, which I have used before but I haven't seen or accepted any offers of firmware updates. Surely the beast couldn't do it all by itself? Managed one print and then got no ink levels and the both cartridges are faulty error on the "HP Solutions" software. BOTH faulty? Seemed highly suspicious to me. Got some genuine HP ones at a greatly reduced price and they worked OK.

I have a Canon Pixma MP560. Bought it at Big Lots several years ago on sale for $29.95. I was buying my ink at Walmart. Singles ran about $13 each, and the double black was around $18. All five cost about, $70. Had my friend tell me he bought all his ink, and toner on Ebay. Went to Ebay and searched for my printers ink. Found several sellers. Ended up buying from a seller that had a 20 pack, 4 of each color, and 4 doubles, for $13.95, with free shipping. That's $14 for 20 ink tanks, where I was paying that much for one at Walmart. Plus I didn't have to waste gas, and deal with the checkout lines at Walmart. They met all OEM specs and have a 2 year shelf life. I've not had any problems what so ever. When I got them I noticed 3 of them had leaked. I emailed the seller and they offered a refund, or replacement. I opted for the replacement, and had them with-in 4 days. I might add I'm using HP photo paper in this Canon printer, with the Ebay ink, and they look great.
So yes, I'm sticking with the cheap ink from now on.

I have a Lexmark printer for which I buy ink from 101Inks.com and hopefully I can continue doing so. I have an add-on app on my computer that transforms a page to a PDF (called 'Print friendly and PDF'). This saves paper and ink.

Interesting article. My Epson WF2540 suddenly stopped printing--no message, showed well above half full for all cartridges. Multiple cleanings, and the test page still showed nothing, or lines so faint they were unreadable. My ink cartridges were LD, with which I have had no prior problems. I suspect the printer, but was it firmware or the need for a replacement printing head? The printer was not very old. I've been buying Epson or Canon because I don't like the HP practice of magenta, cyan, and yellow in the same cartridge. At their cartridge prices, I don't like throwing away ink!

Yes I too think I have been "Borked" as my HP PSC 2610 does not know who I am. Print's test pages from the desktop, laptop, even the neighbors computer, but won't show up when I run the software. I've spent way too much time with HP support. This is not the first time spent with HP support, but it is the last time.

I have an HP 8610 printer and was using OEM printer cartridges in it, until a firmware update rendered them useless. HP is too high on their ink. When this printer stops working, I'll see about getting a Brother.

Tried using Epson, and had nothing but trouble with them. Might also check out Cannon.

I've been using HP equipment and want to continue because they are very trustworthy.
I especially like the printers because they just keep on working and I go an awful long time on a cartridge (set).
Also I find that they will work without a hitch when left to sit for prolonged periods. Of course with HP ink because they've got me convinced it is far superior.
I know it rejects other flavours, but my experience with other brands of printers and with refills (quite a while ago) has me hooked on HP.

I've been using LD cartridges with my Brother MFC 440CN for a while now - no problems whatsoever.

About 4 years ago I gave up on HP printers. Had three different models and they all crimped the front edge of card stock and always left a small white triangular space on the edge of any picture I tried to print borderless on 4x6 photo paper. I was always fighting warnings about my after market cartridges. I switched to Canon Pixma series and can find inexpensive cartridges that the printer recognizes and uses without complaint. I won't be going back to HP anytime soon.

Bob: I had the identical problem with the same model HP printer. I had the same pleasant experience with LD - they replaced the cartridges I had purchased for no charge. However, I did have some older color cartridges that they couldn't replace.

I solve the issue by not buying ANYTHING from HP. I had a Lexmark printer for 10 years before buying a new Canon last year, and I used non-OEM cartridges in it and never ever had a problem. With my Canon, I abysmally use Canon cartridges because they are really inexpensive and I can buy black and color ink separately. With free shipping from Canon, it's about the same as aftermarket ones.

I just bought an HP printer that uses a color cartidge that contains all 3 colors because of their InstantInk program. HP counts the amount of printing you do and sends replacement cartridges before you run out of ink. A prepaid mailer is included to return the old cartridges to HP. HP has several levels to choose from, depending on how much you print. There are credits or charges if you do more or less printing than anticipated. This program is only available for newer printers that use the 3 colors in one cartridge. HP claims that the cartridges contain more ink than the XL type. Since I don't do alot of printing this is ideal for me. I believe that the replacements are charged to a credit card etc. only when you install them.

Installed a refilled cartridge on my HP Deskjet and got an incompatible message. Went to the HP website and found an ad for another refill company. Ordered some and "incompatible." Bought new HP cartridges and.....incompatible.I now have three XL60 cartridges! Time to forget HP. Have owned HP printers and laptops for 15 years, but never again.
