Golden rule I guess: If it aint broken don't update. Couldn't you just revert to a previous system image?

I haven't run into this problem. My big beef with HP is their slowness in coming up with drivers for Windows 10. The poor support they offer is truly ridiculous. I too will be switching brands next time I need a new printer.

Reading the comments it appears to me that most of your followers are too young to recall Tom Lehrer and his song about the dope peddler. I suggest anyone wanting to understand the printer economy just google the above and listen.

My old Canon inkjet printer required their (expensive) cartridges also, and it would often stop printing from dried ink. I converted to a laser printer and have not had a problem in 6 years - works every time even after months sitting idle or turned off. And it accepts generic toners without complaint.

I think the windows 10 upgrade did something similar to my printer (Lexmark 2200)last summer. The printer worked fine before the upgrade and didn't afterwards. Apparently some scan driver no longer available and not on my Lexmark disk. win10 started giving me problems a few days later causing me to go back and redownload win7 along with all the updates. So now am back on win7 minus a printer. Well I finally joined the paperless revolution. Ha!

My HP 3-in 1 printer sits across the room and has worked well for about 4 years. Although I have never tried third party refills I have had the guy at the corner variety store refill the cartridge several times. It costs me about eight bucks less than a genuine 'new' cartridge and has not failed me yet. I have given up on color printing and replace only the black cartridge as I can see the color picture on my computer monitor just fine.

What I do wonder is if HP cartridges are designed to somehow evaporate ink if the printer is used infrequently. I am almost sure that I have printed no more than 25 pages in the past month when I put the cartridge in and it shows that it is now half empty.

Bob, Thanks for the info. I'm sharing it all over the place. I'm really tired of companies---and not just electronic ones---that don't support loyal customers. As far as I'm concerned, HP just shot itself in the foot. I, too, use LD Products and recommend them to all my friends. So far, I haven't noticed anything unusual with my HP printer, but I also don't accept updates. HP tends to take over your entire computer with its software, so I don't install it all all, except for the printer driver. I also don't use Norton Anti-Virus anymore for the same reason. I'm also running Windows XP which is less security conscious than later Windows.

I gave up on HP ages ago - anyone can make a printer that works, but not everyone that does has the bloated, intrusive software HP has. Their software should be categorised as malware.

I had the same problem with my EPSON R280's as I was addressing many Christmas card envelopes. Used an older laptop & printer while I waited for a YDK-968 Resetter. For resetting the Epson Ink cartridges. All third party refills now work.

I have had the same problem with several HP printers. They suddenly would not accept even a legitimate HP cartridge. So I tossed it/them to the recycle and bought a new printer, another HP. It worked for a while with refilled cartridges then got the message on screen that the cartridge was incompatible or damaged. With my old Lexmark, single cartridge, printer I could refill the cartridge several times. And one feature I did like with the old Lexmark, the print head was replaceable when it wore out. I agree with one poster that there should be a reservoir that could be filled with ink instead of all the waste with the cartridges with the print head built in.
There must be a way to access and change the "hostage taking" program in the printer. Thanks for the heads up article on HP's hostage taking update.
MS is using similar tactics to force consumers to load Windows 10. I found a couple of programs that will hold it at bay for a while. Sneaky MS has changed the Win10 update file from optional to critical to trick ppl into loading it.

I have had an HP printer for eight years now. It is HP Color Laser Jet CP3505dn and I have used it a lot and I have always used the cartridges from LD products without a problem. Yesterday I brought my new W 10 unit home and I really like the 10, but I didn't think to have my shop download the new drivers for me for the printer. I should be able to do that, but now I am wondering if I will be running in to a major problem. I just can't buy another printer at this time and I certainly don't want one with the little cartridges as I would be constantly out of ink.

I had so many problems using aftermarket ink in my HP printer that I trashed it. I bought an Epson XP-610 and have been very happy with it. I do get a nag screen occasionally about genuine Epson cartridges. But I have been using refilled ink and have not had an issue. It is also so much better on ink usage. Plus it has wireless!

I will not purchase anything by HP now . I have a wonderful PC offline with XP and 4 standby cloned HD'S and 5 My Passports full . Love the 0fact that my inexpensive Canon printer and PC are not exposed to updates now . Have only used OEM cartridges since I do not print a lot .
I transfer items from my phone if I need to print . For the most part my PC and printer remain unmolested .

In my opinion, printer companies use the "Kodak" business model for inkjets, where they break even or lose money on the printer, but make all their profits on ink, in the same way Kodak used to practically give away cameras in order to sell film and developing services. I believe Epson is bucking this now, by marketing a more expensive printer with large, refillable ink reservoirs that are cheap to refill. If this does well in the market, I hope we'll see similar from other manufacturers.

Thanks for the heads up Rob! I think the FTC should look into HP and other companies who use firmware to try to force you to use only their brand of ink cartridges. It's amazing how the mighty have fallen. HP used to be a great brand and I often bought their brand. This would be like a car maker building detectors in their car that will render your car unusable if you didn't use their own OEM parts or even locking the hood and only a dealer has a key to unlock it and work on your car. I think this is just as bad as Microsoft trying to trick users into updating their systems to Windows 10 by hiding the Windows 10 files in "important" security updates.

Have the same problem with Epson. On second printer, as I thought the first was defective. Not true, second one did same thing on replacement ink cartridges. So had to go to genuine Epson ink cartridges and guess it won't do any good to get a different brand printer, as evidently most of the printer manufacturers are doing the same thing. Very frustrating and totally unfair to the consumer.

I had the same problem last weed and ld products are great. I just don't have the time to mess around with this kind of stuff so i just bought the hd ink. If i didn't have to run an office i would just get rid of them. But next time i buy a printer i am looking more into this.
