SSD vs. HDD: Battle for the Bits

Two technologies are competing in the data storage market; one dates back to the original hard disk drive in 1956, the other became widely available to consumers about a decade ago. As you might expect, the latter is vastly superior in performance. Today, the price difference between them is narrowing rapidly. In this corner... The Venerable Hard Disk Drive (HDD) and its challenger, The Solid State Disk (SSD). Let the fight begin!

Ready to Upgrade Your Hard Drive to SSD?

Let's examine the specs and capabilities of the reigning champion first. Open the shiny steel case of a conventional HDD and you will find a nostalgic array of parts that strongly resemble a vinyl record turntable. There are stacked platters of rigid substrate coated with magnetic particles; the magnetic state of each tiny spot on these disks determines whether it is recognized as a 1 or 0 for data processing purposes.

There is also an armature that moves back and forth across the disk, and at its tip is a sensor called a read-write head, analogous to the needle in a phonograph’s armature. There is an armature for each stacked disk, giving the overall armature the appearance of a comb.

The phonograph’s needle reads the tiny back-and-forth jiggles of a groove cut into a vinyl record to reproduce the sounds that made the groove. As it flies over the surface of the spinning disk, the HDD’s read-write head can both read the magnetic state of spots on the disk and change that state to write data to them.

SSD versus HDD

Spinning vinyl records topped out at 78 rpm. The disks in a HDD spin at 5,400 to 7,200 rpm typically; some high-performance HDDs may reach 10,000 rpm. This rotation speed largely determines how fast data can be read and written on the HDD. The amount of data that can be stored on a standard-sized HDD is called its “data density” and is largely a function of the read-write head’s precision plus the speed at which the disk spins.

Electric motors drive all the moving parts of a HDD. The bearings in those motors are the HDD’s Achilles heel, the typical point of failure. When your HDD starts making rumbling noises it’s a sign that its bearings are starting to wear out; when the sound changes to “grinding” disaster is imminent and you had better have a current backup of your data.

It's All About the Donuts

By contrast, the solid-state drive (SSD) challenger contains no moving parts. Instead, it is filled with flash memory, the same stuff found in USB flash drives. Think of flash memory as a densely-woven 3-D fabric of crisscrossing wires. At the junction of two wires, electrical current can change the state of a tiny donut-shaped bit of metal; these metal donuts (also called gates) are arranged in a 3-D array.

The electrical state of a gate determines whether it is counted as a 1 or 0. (Each gate can have other states as well, which increases potential data density.) The state of a gate is retained even when electricity is turned off.

Electrons move at nearly the speed of light, so flipping a gate’s state is nearly instantaneous. So is reading the state of any gate given its x-y-z coordinates in the array. So an SSD is silent and supremely fast.

That silence, though, is both a blessing and a drawback; there is no early-warning rumbling to let you know your SSD will soon fail. On the other hand, an SSD is nearly immune to damage by dropping or jostling, whereas such shocks can result in a knockout blow to the read-write head of an HDD. A stack of spinning magnetic disks is obviously more vulnerable to physical damage. An SSD does not suffer mechanical wear due to friction, and has no moving parts that can be bent or scratched. So it should last much longer than an HDD.

A Windows PC with an HDD may take tens of seconds to boot up. The same machine equipped with an SSD will boot in a fraction of that time. On systems that have limited RAM memory, an SSD can really speed up the time required to swap data in and out of virtual memory. Additionally, applications that read and write large quantities of data on mass storage work much faster with an SSD than with an HDD. Such applications include gaming, video editing, working with large databases or spreadsheets, and more. But every app that uses mass storage benefits from an SSD. That time saving alone is enough to justify the extra cost of an SSD in many people’s minds.

SSDs come in the same form factors as HDDs, including standard SATA interfaces, so they can be plug-and-play replacements for HDDs. SSDs come in other form factors too: SD cards, memory sticks, and more. Solid state memory is a versatile medium.

Storage Prices Continue to Drop

Price per gigabyte is one way to measure the value of mass storage, and here the HDD still reigns supreme. Back in 1981 when the IBM PC debuted, HDD prices were in the range of $300,000 per gigabyte. In 1995, when the Web was young, prices had dropped to $750 per gigabyte. Today, you can buy HDD storage for about TWO CENTS per gig. For example, there's the Seagate Barracuda 4TB Desktop HDD for $85.

By contrast, SSDs cost about 5 times more per gigabyte. Here's a 1 Terabyte Crucial BX500 SSD drive for $99 - just ten cents per gigabyte. The last time I reviewed storage prices, about two years ago, SSDs were about TEN times more expensive than HDDs.

Will SSD prices continue to drop at the same rate? Time will tell. Capacities of both HDD and SSD drives will continue to grow as greater data density becomes feasible. I can’t imagine needing 10 or 15 TB of storage but those who do will be able to get it in either SSD or HDD.

SSD drives do wear out, but it takes a long time. There is a limit to the number of times the state of one of those “donuts” can be flipped before it simply stops working. Circuitry within an SSD keeps track of the number of times every donut has been flipped, and retires those that are too near their expected life’s end. Over time, less space is available on an SSD due to these retirements. In practical terms, your computer will probably be obsolete before that happens.

When I bought my Dell Optiplex computer five years ago, I ordered a 250GB SSD drive to replace the 500GB hard drive that shipped with it. The Samsung 850 EVO came with software called Samsung Data Migration, which made it super-easy to transfer everything from my existing hard drive, and make the new SSD my primary C: drive.

The result was pretty dramatic. Startup time was slashed, programs open quicker, and everything just works faster. And that SSD is still going strong. At current prices and capacities, I would recommend a solid-state drive as an excellent investment for any PC or Mac owner. It's one of the best upgrades you can make, in terms of boosting performance.

HDDs will always have a place in data processing, the place where low cost per gigabyte is most important. When it comes to performance, shock-resistance, and overall longevity, the future seems to belong to SSD.

I have a VERY old laptop that was using a HDD, and I got a SSD from Crucial and made the replacement myself. Now that computer is much quieter running and generates hardly any heat. I've got a newer Dell desktop computer and it came with the SSD already installed. I can hardly tell when it's on!

Ahem, some dodgy physics there - individual electrons do NOT move at nearly the speed of light, but about a billionth of that. Electric signals or currents are fast, electrons aren't.

I started buying SSDs a few years ago for project computers and I find they work quite well.The set up for any OS is about the same as a HDD.For me,cost is a consideration,so if I find a SSD on sale,I will buy it with no hesitation.I just make sure the brand is reputable.

My desktop PC is an older machine, predating Windows 7 (I think). As it has grown older, I added an NVidia Graphics adapter for better video performance, maxed out system RAM, and upgraded the CPU from an AMD Athlon II x2 (which originally came with the box) to an AMD Phenom II x4 945 Deneb.

All this made the system run more smoothly, but it was still aggravatingly slow to respond. My last upgrade was replacing the 500GB 5400 rpm HDD with a 1TB SSD. The difference was amazing! My aged system is no longer aggravatingly slow! Its not quick, but the delays are now tolerable, and I can get things done much faster than before. These upgrades have breathed new life into my venerable old desktop!

As a final note, the single thing that had the greatest impact on my system's performance is the SSD drive. It cost nearly $100.00 US, and it has been well worth every penny!

I recently bought a PVD for OTA tv recording. I needed to buy a hard drive. I found a 1TB SSD the size of a credit card on eBay for $25. It works. Who knows the quality, but I will be using it to store tv recordings--no big deal. A pretty cheap experiment.

Six years ago I assembled my PC with a 1 TB Crucial SSD which cost $400.00 at that time. All was well until earlier this year my PS failed and apparently damaged the SSD. That SSD is now as dead as a brick. (I replaced the PS and the SSD with a new Samsung SSD. All works well.) Is there any way to get data off the failed SSD? As I said before, my PC does not even detect anything when I have the failed SSD installed as a second drive.

Bob asks "Have you moved from HDD to SDD in your computer?" My first WinOS transfer to SSD was an OMG moment, as I go way back to the days of 5 1/4" drives (well actually punch cards started it all for me). My last 3 builds were with NVMe drives (size of chiclets gum) with more OMG moments.

I thoroughly endorse the concept that an SDD is worth the investment even at 5x the cost per gigabyte; in my mind the performance increase totally justifies it the expenditure. I probably would not have said that a month ago, before purchasing a system with a 256 GB SSD in it. After experiencing it I can now say that without hesitation.
For use in a portable device an SDD makes even more sense given the inherent shock resistance.

Your description of SSDs as being like doughnuts disturbs me, since I believe SSDs store information as charge levels on floating gates. Back in the dark ages, core memory was indeed made of woven wires with donuts that could be magnetized by currents and that RAM was not volatile like todays RAM since the cores stayed magnetized without the need for power. I remember using an IBM 1130 that had only 8 KB of core memory and the most you could get was 32 KB. But it had a 14” removable hard disk that could store a whopping 500 KB.

And it should be noted that with a desktop there is almost always room for both a HDD and SSD. Use the SSD for your OS and programs, and the HDD for all your data. The best of all worlds.

We tried an SSD in my wifes older laptop and wow what a difference. So much so I installed SSD's in my desktop and made sure my new laptop came with SSD. I do have a very old laptop with a P4 processor. It would just barely run Win10. Just for fun I installed an unbuntu operating system that mimics windows and boom, it is now working as my media server and keeps up just fine. I cannot imagine how fast a new computer with SSD, lots of memory, and a system besides windows would really be.

Is it true that defragmentation software should NOT be used to defrag a SSD?

@Kent; Yes that's true. SSD should not be defragged. Just like a SD card. No mention of hybrid drives here. Which is in this laptop. And which I'll defrag with Glary Utilities when it's more than 2% fragmented. Will it wear out the drive? It certainly speeds up after defragging.

My Chromebook uses a SSD. With the software being fast to boot up. The SSD makes it that much faster. The SSD also makes the laptop's case thinner.

I own an Asus laptop about 7 yo. It has 16 GB RAM from day one. It was/is a good machine, I have not had any real need to replace it yet.

However, it came with a 500GB SATA HDD and I changed it for a 400GB SSD a couple of years ago.
The performance boost was outstanding. Since then I have done the same for a couple of friends, also great improvements.

The process to move the whole system & data from HDD to SSD was a bit tricky as a simple copy won't make the destination SSD bootable

All in all, it's a highly recommended step

D. Lieb. As Bob often repeats....backup, backup, backup, backup. Sad to say, the old SSD and all its content are dead. Sorry. Backup. backup, backup, and there will never be fear of loss in your computer life.
