I do not use any social site at all

This always amuses me. A while back, I joined MySpace, then after a month, I cancelled it. I didn't see the point. So, when Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, and Instagram came out, I just blissfully ignored it and never joined. I still don't see the point. FOMO, not a concern. I subscribe to news and other things where I generally don't miss much, and sometimes friends just email or text me. So, no, I'm not salivating at the thought of leaving Facebook.

Great article. I have the same love/hate relationship, having connected with many friends I would otherwise have little or no way of finding after many years. I love, however, the news about Google photos and will be looking into that, for the ability to index them, while fully aware that Google is almost as bad (worse?) in terms of collecting my information. Something to add about Twitter's news feed is they've started defaulting to "top tweets" first, where I need to select "latest" on a repeated basis in order to not have the world at large determine what I'm seeing...

Minds.com is a new but growing platform for chatting/blogging. Very "Free Speech" oriented, no "Facebook Jail" if you say something which is politically incorrect.

Yes real news is posted on Twitter more swiftly than via the few remaining real news "alt" media, but should be anonymous to reduce escalated doxxing/stalking/aggression. For friends/famly social network alt to censoring, manipulating Facebook and Google I'm delighted to discover one of my relatives already on alt LibertyRush.com, where I hope to migrate more family and friends :)

I don’t really use Facebook. I have an account for the occasion time I need to use it for a very specific task. The account only has a few family members as friends, and otherwise has things locked down as well as you can on facebook. It rarely gets used. I have zero use for the barrage of dumb memes and minute to minute updates on someone’s day.

As far as social media in general? No need to throw out the baby with the stenchy bath water. Properly done, I think it can certainly serve a good purpose. I enjoy being able to engage in discourse with groups of people who have similar interests. It allows me to learn a lot, impart knowledge I may have and hear various viewpoints on the topics. This is especially interesting when members are from various parts of the world.

Currently, I use MeWe. Certainly, the privacy policies are a part of that choice. The groups to which I belong are typically closed, so they don’t get bombarded with spammy or troll posts. The groups are specific to areas of interest, and there are people with a lot of knowledge and experience in the groups. To me, this is what social networking is really about - not the endless chattering nonsense and intrusiveness seen on some platforms.

Thanks for another great article, Bob. One caution about Yahoo groups. Yahoo has done a great job for a long time of supporting their subscribing groups. BUT Yahoo and AOL are both owned now by Verizon, which mines all that data as aggressively and thoroughly as Facebook — or Google.

While I do think Facebook is far from perfect, I still value the connections I have made with family, extended family, work friends, school friends etal.
Not really interested in starting over.
I don't find it that hard to resist ads, actually I get very few because I use Social Fixer app and Facebook's own advanced settings. I don't see it being overtly onerous to scroll past the posts I don't find interesting, nor do I find following links to the ones I do want to be so.
Really I found all the junk I used to get from friends and family as email to be far more annoying.

I've found email and even the telephone works just fine for keeping up with friends and relatives.

"Permanently deleted". -- Really? Honest? No trace anywhere?

Perhaps ". . . permanently deleted and stored forever or until a MASSIVE CME* magnetic pulse deletes it forever in reality. . ." might be a FAR more Truthful way to state the closer to 'truth' than not.

*CME = Coronal Mass Ejection - when a MASSIVE Solar flair takes down our magneto-electrical grid and all that is attached to it. Think 'Carrinton Event".

OAN has launched a social media sight called freetalk24. Not much there yet but I hope it grows.

I use one app which I was suprised to see missing. Mainly - - WhatsApp !!
I like it, share photos, make special groups, works great in any country - so far.

Try WhatsApp as a facebook alternative or to augment facebook anyway. It started out as a cell phone app, but can easily be used on my mainfraim and laptop too.

I used "social media" long before computers were invented. I would write a letter on a piece of paper with an ink pen and mail it to someone, who read the letter. You would think people did not communicate with each other before the 'digital age'.

It is ok to leave facebook But you have to get your friends to do the same? And that will be the difficult part.

it's interesting that there's no mention of FB's asymmetric censorship policies as a reason for disenchantment with it, nor of, for instance, gab.ai.

Facebook is a bully and censors what people post, and what I post. I've been in Facebook's jail" twice in six weeks because of my conservative posts that may offend one person who complains while dozens of other people like my posts.

I'm ready to bail from Facebook if I can find one of the new platforms that offers what I need, especially a robust share option and teh ability to transfer my nearly 3000 "friends" from facebook easily..

I use both Facebook & MeWe. More Facebook though as only a few friends have migrated to MeWe and it seems my feed has been taken over by prolific "info warriors" and not much else. My friends have started new groups, but not much activity on them as yet.

I have my Facebook page locked down as well as I can and do not hesitate to block those I see who constantly post argumentative and insulting missives, even friends. I've also weaned myself off daily use.

The only time I get really irritated is when Facebook insists on invading my feed with "suggested" adverts of people or things I may be "interested" in. Most of which I couldn't care less about, they really don't know me as well as they think. I just block or hide them anyway. And I'm not easily swayed being the pessimist I am. I don't mind the ads along the side of the feed as they are easily ignored.

I stay because I too have many friends I've re-connected with and now seem to have some older aged relatives who have learned how to us it. I do enjoy keeping in touch with all of them as we're all spread out geographically to keep in close social contact. Social media will always be a double-edged sword as long as there is money to be made and we're the commodity.

Wish people would stop ripping Facebook. We use it and love it. We have found old friends, old school mates, and military buddies from years past. It's also a great way to set up private pages that only families and close friends can join. It provides a great way to socialize for zero cost.
