gee, I feel like a dope - I never would fall for that stuff, even on poorly programmed web-sites that took an act of Parliament to sign up for!

Excellent article Bob. Very informative. The more I read about Facebook and other (un)social media sites the more I'm inclined to avoid them like the plague!
Your article shows that some of the people who run these sites care not a hoot for the people who use them or they would have sorted the OAuth problem by banning it's use.
The way it works is fairly complicated so it is difficult for a person to know they have been scammed.
Your article should be required reading for anyone contemplating using social media.

Glad to know that my instincts have served me well on this one! I have NEVER used Facebook or Google or Twitter to log into anything, except Facebook, Google or Twitter. All those permissions you had to give to enable this always made me very uneasy, so I decided a long time ago to keep it all separate. We all have so many passwords for everything to remember anyway, what's another couple? Seems I was right all along not to trust this.

For many years I have always created new IDs and passwords for new online accounts. However, a couple of years ago I visited a website that REQUIRED that I sign in with Facebook or some other account. Realizing that that wasn't a good idea but still wanting to have an account there, I created a fake Facebook account using a disposable email address and used that. My fake Facebook account has no data about me, other than the fictitious name, and has no friends because I don't request friends and don't accept friend requests. This method of handling that situation has worked well for me the few times I was required to use a Facebook account to sign in.

I am completely agree with bob, so many times even this happen to me. Only difference was other site did not taken any personal information. Also there are many websites those invites to Sign Up or Subscribe but in case if you want to Unsubscribe you can do so. So before signing up take extra precaution. Safety is completely in your own hands. If you are not a geek or less affluent in tech front , do not click on unknown links.

Another timely article, thanks Bob.

Years a go in an article about inadvertently downloading a virus via a pop up, Bob recommended to not close the pop up with a click of the mouse.

Instead use CTRL SHIFT ESC

I have closed any pop ups this way ever since.

Would this action have stopped this situation?

Many times I am so glad I don't use social media sites, and today was another of those days.

Thanks Bob.

Timely reminder, and VERY useful link to MyPermissions. Glad to discover that while my FB account was at risk, I've been sensible with other accounts (Google, Yahoo et al) with no gaping holes in those accounts! Whew!

Congratulations, Bob, for bringing this to our attention. Would just mention that I found the http://mypermissions.com/ site difficult to use - for instance their blog would not render properly; they do not have much in the way of product description on their own site, and they send you off to the (itself rather dubious) cnet site for a "review" of their windows app. Quite honestly, without your blessing on them, I would be very wary of using them

OMGoodness....facebook alone has me all over the place...G+, not so much. Thought this was a fun way to keep in contact with those far away. Now I have serious doubts. Bob, you keep me from being totally ignorant when it comes to computer stuff. Thanks so much for sharing our expertise.

EDITOR'S NOTE: That's just a picture of what the signin buttons look like. There is no signin required for the askbobrankin.com site.

Thanks, Bob - particularly for the link to mypermissions.com. I had no idea that I'd enabled sharing for the sites that showed up. Explains a number of the ads I'd been seeing since I do research for content articles.

About Zoosk - I owe a friend an apology. I assumed she'd signed me up for that service, cancelled it immediately. They've evidently been doing this for quite a few years because this was about three years ago.

Thanks again

Excellent article, Bob. Two or three years ago, at my grandchildrens' urging....I signed us up with Facebook so we could keep contact with the kids. Well....we had never been bothered with much in the way of SPAM in the past but when I signed up with FB it was like opening a hole in the floodwall. WOW! And, we've never been able to shut it completely off. Probably should change our E-mail address but that would also be a real headache...for several reason.

Personally....I warn everyone to stay away unless they enjoy getting all that junk.

Mypermissions rocks! Took a second to add to Chrome & a few seconds to find my permissions, which I could edit or remove. I removed them regardless of for what I'd given them permissions just to be on the safe side. Shared it on facebook. Thanks so much, Bob.!

That is one of the 100+ reasons I dumped Facebook a long time ago, and refuse to be a part of any social network site!!!!

I am becoming more and more suspicious of Facebook as time goes on. I'm on there mainly because there are some groups that are of interest to me. I have had some excellent conversations with these people. Other than that, I could do without it. But for now I'll remain on, though I did take a hiatus for a while. As always we must be careful about clicking on anything. Great article and one I am going to share with our computer group.

I think you have mistakenly hit the nail right on the head, Mr. Rankin! Facebook is the 21st Century means of becoming a legally/socially acceptable peepinTom, where one can snoop on other people freely. I feel sorry for "Mari" Sherkin but the cardinal sin that she committed was to not register to Facebook using your suggestion of an alias; such as "Mary" Sherkin! Frankly (or marily), I may have gone at least one step further and registered using the alias "Mary Cherkin" or sumsuch!
Thank you for yet another great topic/article, Mr. Rob Bankin.

I am very aware, of the dangers of Facebook!!! However, how do you get the websites that use Facebook, for comments and mostly, the infamous Like Button ... Not to use Facebook???!!!

I have several political newsletters and most of them, use Facebook for commenting. I prefer Discus, but, not many websites are using Discus these days. Word Press is mostly for Blogging, yet, I can comment on those websites.

Yes, I have a Google+ account, but, just don't use it, never have. I think, I read either on Bob's website or another ... That Google was going to change Google+, to be called something else or just let it die. Now, in all honesty, I may have just dreamt all of this up, too!!! LOL LOL LOL (Just checked, Google+ is in trouble)

As far as I am concerned, I have been highly irritated, with Facebook, for about a year, now. I want to stop using Facebook, but, it is the only way, I can keep in touch, with close family, that live far away.

Thanks for a useful and informative article. In light of what you said, I was surprised to see a box next to your article that allows readers to sign in to "AskBobRankin.Com" via Facebook, Twitter or Google+. As the Czar of your own web page, do you have control over OAuth using it as a stepping stone to other sites?

Virtually all the TV News Services here and many Commerce sites want you to sign in with Facebook and Like their site. If there is no option to bypass Facebook, I do not sign up just to comment. Besides the fact that there are a lot fake comments and hecklers.
