because of Florida's hinky local tax applications, I wouldn't even consider a sale outside of my home county, where at least I know the rules and regulations. here's hoping the House will deliver us from evil!

That is only first step. Soon to follow will be the feds or state imposing a "user tax" on any email address. Look at how your phone bill & other utilities are taxed. Or am I mistaken BOB?

I've grown so accustomed to the convenience of on-line shopping that I don't think my on-line shopping will change.

I order from Amazon, but more from companies that have a store in my state. It is usually much easier than taking the time to drive to the store, find a parking spot, find the item(s), stand in line to pay, etc. Shipping charges for the companies that do charge are generally less that the price of gas.

While I understand the difficulties and concerns, there is a fairness issue. Barnes and Noble has to charge sales tax and Amazon does not for the same purchase. That gives Amazon an unfair advantage over a competitor. I don't have an answer, I'm not sure there is one with no flaws.

When I "retired" I started two websites plus selling on Amazon and eBay. So now the government wants me to become a tax collector. I have a better idea.

How about if the states actually enforce the laws already on the books about taxpayers having to report out of state purchases?? Convict a few, throw the book at them and maybe people will get the message.

I am more than willing to provide any state tax authority with my sales records as to the name and address of purchaserws in their state as long as they legally request it in writing. I will not and do not encourage tax fraud.

Just don't make me the tax collector unless you are paying me to do it! START ENFORCING THE LAWS ALREADY ON THE BOOKS!!

Another example of increasing tax to the middle class while giving tax brakes to the rich!

I can see this working if the online seller resides in the US. But how do they enforce this law for overseas (or your northern neighbour)? Does the IRS have jurisdiction outside of the US via tax agreements? I can see a lot of US based online vendors moving offshore to avoid this.

I live in California, and Amazon has been taxing my online purchases from them for ... um, I'm not really sure. Several months, I guess.

I curse. But I pay. I like supporting my local bookshop, but it's small, doesn't have much selection, and doesn't offer to ring my doorbell and hand me my book in two days, as Amazon does.

Internet purchases are more of a convenience for me than a cost savings. Once you add shipping costs to the online sales price there is only a marginal, if any, cost savings versus buying at a store.

If sales tax is added to internet purchases, I would significantly reduce my purchases or turn to foreign country websites for my onling purchases.

Yet CBO indicates "S. 743 would impose no intergovernmental or private-sector mandates as defined in the Unfunded Mandates Reform Act and would impose no costs on state, local, or tribal governments." Seems to me that having to provide sales tax software to Internet vendors is going to constitute a significant cost to local governments. I do not want my purchases out for all and sundry to look thru or have contact information.

Its about time this was taxed. I am not pro-taxes. As far as I am concerned remove all sales taxes from everyone or make everyone pay the same. As a small business owner I am at a disadvantage. 18 Billion is not small change . As far as privacy concerns I agree there is no need for them to know street addresses, they could distribute it by Zip Codes. On-line businesses should be good citizens too. In all fairness it would be nice that when you post an “anti" petition that there is also an “in favor of” option. Both points of view are always beneficial. Thank You.

I'm for collection of state sales taxes on online purchases. Local taxes are a whole 'nother issue, because they typically are smaller, and more specialized. As I live in Kentucky where Amazon has several facilities, I automatically pay sales tax on purchases from them. I don't shop there (or BN.com, or BAM.com) to avoid tax, I shop there because they have stuff that i can't find elsewhere.

It appears to me that the requirement that online retailers charge sales tax will put them to a major disadvantage because they will then have to add to their posted price not only the tax but the cost of handling and shipping, as well

I could see this as a boon for businesses that make less than 1 mil. Why not advertise yourself as a company that doesn't collect sales tax? Maybe this will generate a bunch of small businesses or cause bigger businesses to break up. Have a special seal made that businesses could use to publicize the fact that they haven't buckled under the government need to continue taxing when they said they wouldn't.

I see, so the midsize business will make every family member an owner of a new small business with annual sales revenues of less than 1 mil to avoid paying the sales tax. Look at the bright side, many new small small business, end of the big behemoths!

I don't clearly undestand how this bill can affect us, who live at the rest of the world (outside the US).
Must we be concerned or not??
