I found only two of the four updates, and both had been installed on August 15.

Bob, I got a copy of a warning email from Microsoft that recommended deletion only of KB2982791. I did that even though I never had a BSOD. I will now on your recommendation go after the other three. Question - your last item, 297533 is only six digits whereas the others are seven digits. Is this a correct reference?

Thanks for the heads up, Bob.

Your instructions for uninstalling were detailed, but I noticed two issues you may want to correct:

(1) The "Uninstall" option was not available in the sidebar of my Win 7 Home Premium Toshiba. It's in the bar across the top of the list of installed updates.

(2) After uninstalling the first one you listed, the pop-up window says, "You must restart your computer to apply these changes. Restart Now/Later." I wish I knew if I could uninstall all four, THEN restart, rather than having to uninstall and reboot; uninstall and reboot; uninstall and reboot; and uninstall and reboot. You might want to amend your instructions to address that issue.

Thanks!

Mac

Thank you, Bob, for likely saving me hours of aggravation. I had one of these files on my system and just deleted it. Geesh, now we can't even trust Microsoft's patches?!?

I found KB2982791 on my computer but none of the others. It has been uninstalled. I'm sure glad I get your newsletter on a daily basis and that this was the lead article for today. It would seem to me, however, that Microsoft should be contacting individuals directly to ensure that this type of issue is brought to everyone's attention as soon as possible. Rather I feel that I just "stumbled" across it.

Thanks for the heads up .... I found 2982791 on my list but it was installed on the 15th not the 2nd. [I deleted it anyway]

Ah well, finally got sick of waiting, and reset the computer locked on the "Preparing to configure" screen.
Everything is working fine. It seemed to have stuck on the last correction of the registry, but it completed after a new restart.

Others may have this problem.

I see that two of the above taboo patches are installed on my Win 8.1 Pro 64bit system.

However, when I highlight these two patches, the Uninstall option disappears...I have no way of uninstalling those patches! What now?

EDITOR'S NOTE: Hmmm, maybe try selecting them one at a time?

I found only the first two KB's on each of my 3 Win7/64 machines. I updated all 3 on 8/14. Is it possible the unfound KB's had already been removed by Microsoft?
On a related note, all 3 machines boot up with the little, white update flag turned off; I have to manually turn the update monitor on. Is this normal? Does everyone have to do this?

Thank you Bob!!! I found 2 of the listed updates and have deleted them.
I have no idea how I would have ever known about this problem without your newsletter...

Regarding the flawed security patches, I noticed that the first 3 have 7 digits, and the 4th has 6 digits. I assume this is OK. Just checking to be on the safe side.

My updates were installed on 8/13/14.I followed your instructions and found 2982791 and 2970228. I uninstalled both. I was unable to find 2975719 and
297333. I have Windows 7 version 64. Hopefully the other two are not on my computer.

Thanks Bob; ever helpful.
Just a question about the update numbers you quoted. The first three are 7 digits and the last one is only six. Is that correct?

EDITOR'S NOTE: Sorry, I was missing a digit. (2975331) Fixed now.

Dear Bob,
Thanks much for the info. I did not find the flawed patches in my system, but it is nice to know that you are looking after your devoted followers. And, now I know how to delete unwanted updates in the future.

I religiously read all of your articles, and have used a computer for 4 years...and am in my late 60's. I found and deleted one of the flawed security patches listed in your article. I didn't find any other ones listed in my updates. Is it possible to have only one of the four flawed patches? Thanks. Jeanette

EDITOR'S NOTE: Yes.

Bob, you might mention that patches Kb2975719 and KB297533 are only for the UPDATED versions of Windows 8. If you do not have the latest Windows 8.1, you will not be offered these patches.
The first two patches are for Windows 7.
