Windows 10: Ready for Primetime? - Comments Page 1

I have two PCs running Win10. When one of them is awakened from sleep/hibernation, whatever was on the screen when it went to sleep scrolls all the way to the top of the screen and stays there until a key is pressed; only then can I scroll the screen back down. Any ideas about this? Also, I have an iDrive B/U hard drive connected to one of these PCs and it consistently take over a minute to shut down (the other one takes about 12 sec). Is this normal? |

If you update 10 now, since it will interfere with the ability to roll back to 7 or 8 will you be able to roll back at some time in the near future? |

Bob, may I suggest that you investigate the problems that a lot of people (me included) are experiencing installing this latest upgrade to Windows 10. I have Win 10 on a desktop and a laptop and until a few days ago they were at the same level of Windows. Thanks. |

It's my understanding that after installing the update, you can no longer downgrade to Win7 or 8. (Except by restoring an image backup). For this reason, the update isn't offered until you've had Windows 10 for at least 30 days, or outside the downgrade window. Am I right? |

I don't understand all the fuss about faster boot times ( my PC is never off). I need an OS that functions properly AFTER it boots. If 10 doesn't improve dramatically I'll be switching to Linux. |

Why even mention Vista? Windows10 is the finest release ever created. I can't list a single CON to this OS !! It's great. I switched 1 of my computers. After testing for 2 weeks I upgraded the other 4 :) |

At this point I would rather have my less buggy Windows 7 back. Too Late, it performed well for the first 30 days. |

I received the update last weekend and it installed over my existing Windows 10 flawlessly. One warning for those with limited internet service - it is a very big big download! I haven't explored the changes yet, but have been very happy with Windows 10. |

This commentary happens to be very useful, since its first point is that a direct, clean installation now permitted by the W10 process (using a W7/W8 product key). My question now is simple-- once I have installed W10, using the W7 product key, am I forever committed to running W10? What if-- weeks into the "shakedown cruise", I find W10 is so full of gotchas and other problems, I want simply to return to W7? Since Microsoft has registered my Windows as version 10, is my W7 inaccessible? Must I call Microsoft to retrograde to W7? EDITOR'S NOTE: You can make a system image backup, and revert to Win7 by restoring from the backup. |

Had to do a restore to a previous build, after updating to "T2", due to loosing my internet connection and the use of my printer. It seems to me that Microsoft is forcing everyone to be a "Beta" tester; as the OS has become so complicated they don't have enough employees to put out a polished system. |

Good Info---but still not sold on updating to W-10 from W-8 |

If I try to install the new W10 with its faster boot, will it turn my new computer into a brick more quickly than the earlier version did? |

A friend has been trying to update to 10 for months but it bombs partway through the install every time. I think they gave up. And now I've heard they removed the games from 10, and as MineField, Solitaire, and the like are about all my housemate uses the computer for (except eBay and email) looks like I won't be touching it. Win 7 is doing just fine for me so why bother switching to another "end user is the Guinea Pig" OS? EDITOR'S NOTE: The games were not removed from Windows 10. They were removed from Windows 8. You can download all of those freebie games from the Windows Store. |

I updated Win10 Pro yesterday and it took about 2.5 h. However several things happened: (1) task manager disappeared (it previously didn't work with bad parameter), BSOD Video_TDR_Failure (atikmpage.sys) was cleared and ok now, and Edge (formerly working became a not default Browser. So far it's functions but not faster then the original Win7. I guess I will use chrome as a default. The labtop appears ok after an overnight update (so far). How do I get Task Manager back although Process Explorer seems to do the same functions? |

Need to block Epson printer updates - they block the usage of third party cartridges so that you have to buy theirs at 3 to 4 times the price. |

It updated my girlfriends computer which came with Windows 10. But mine, which I upgraded from 7 to 10 a couple of months ago, will not update. I tried the regular update method and the media creation tool. But both failed. The regular update method failed during restart. The media creation tool update failed during the install. |

My question is:If I upgrade to 10 what happens to all my favorites I have bookmarked and my desktop icons? My email server? Do I have to do it all over again? |

Thanks for the info Bob. I'm still not in a hurry, but nice to know one can do a clean install. However, with ms, igo w/if it ain't broken, don't fix it. |

Guess what folks? - Windows 10 is still in the "development phase", and all who have installed it are the one's doing the testing/development for Microsoft, plus giving up TONS of personal information too, - have fun, it might be civilized in a couple years, or a relic - LOL I turned off Auto Updates July 28th on all my W7 computers, and nuked all the spy KBs too, and haven't had to deal with any screwball problems at all! |
